Every year, thousands of Christian school seniors are asked to choose a verse for a graduation announcement or program. Invariably, a high percentage of those students choose Jeremiah 29:11 and for good reason. It states, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” God’s loving providence is invoked by these seniors as they look out with some trepidation on the next chapter of their lives. Youth- ful optimism coupled with an understandable naïveté often leads the graduates to view that future as one free from struggle and hardship, forgetting that God’s plan for our good involves necessary trials and tribulations (James 1:2-4). Aside from that, though, to what extent do any of us really think through how those plans of God should lead our own planning? Aside from the comfort of knowing our sovereign God is there for us, how should this passage in Jeremiah influence our plans, hopes, and dreams for the future? What does that mean for us as a school, planning for the lives of hundreds. There are some easy answers concerning what this doesn’t mean. Just because it’s true that God has a detailed plan for us, even down to the hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), doesn’t mean that we aren’t to take an active role in planning. The Bible is replete with examples of faithful followers of God wisely making plans for the future they faced. Nehemiah didn’t “let go and let God.” On the other hand, God warns of not keeping the “Lord willing (James 4:15)” ever in our minds as we think about our tomorrows (or even our next breath). Somewhere in between passivity and arrogance is where we should operate. Again, where does that leave us as a school? In a school setting, planning is everywhere. Teachers complete lesson plans for the week. Faculty teams plan new classes and curriculum. Administrators plan the budget for a new year. This past year, we spent large amounts of time and energy going above and beyond that normal planning process. We began a major strategic planning process, the results of which will be communicated and initialized this school year. Our theme for this year, GOD’S PLANS, OUR PLANS, will guide my articles as I describe how we went about the process of planning – with prayer, discernment, humility, and a desire to be faithful. I’ll talk about how we will monitor our efforts, always seeking to stay faithful. Due to our fallen and finite natures, I’ll also need to address how we’ll react when it becomes painfully obvious that a part of our plan isn’t God’s plan. Finally, I’ll remind us of the attitude we each need to possess as we work together to bring these plans to fruition for the good of our students and the glory of God.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERSBoard of trustee

Mrs. Tricia Heyward is no stranger to Decatur Heritage. Both of her children, Kristi and Beau Moss, were DHCA graduates, 2005 and 2009 respectively. She is excited to be reunited with the school and to be involved as the school continues its heritage of Christian education in this community. Tricia is married to Barney Heyward who serves as Pastor of Lincoln Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Laura Hellard is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Board. She and her husband Scott are parents of Eleanor, 6th grade, and Charlie, 1st grade. Laura has served in numerous capacities including Strategic Planning Team member, Parent Association leadership committees as well involved with grant writing to benefit the students of the school. The Hellard family attends First Bible Church of Decatur.

Mr. Jeff Parker will also join the Board. Jeff and his wife, Cathy, have four children, Jackson, 11th grade; Spencer, 9th grade; Cameron, 7th grade; and Brooklyn, 6th grade. Jeff is a real estate developer and broker and is actively involved Chamber of Commerce. The Parkers attend First Baptist Church where he is an adult teacher as well as chair of the Finance Committee.

Your prayers are coveted for the 13 men and women who selfishly give their time, energy and expertise to lead DHCA. We are grateful for their faithful leadership.

Our Plan for Impact Our strategic plan for Decatur Heritage is the result of a lengthy process that included many hours of prayer, discussion, and work by the parents, students sta , faculty, administration and trustees who comprised the Strategic Planning Team. During this intense procedure last spring, the Team was challenged to consider and wrestle with who we are as a school and what we seek to accomplish in the lives of our students. We our core values as

an institution and determined certain distinct qualities of a DHCA graduate.

At sixteen years old, Decatur Heritage is considered an infant on the educational landscape. However, God has blessed and positioned us for a future. We must take the foundation that has been laid and build on it the premier school in our area. The evidence of this success will be visible in our graduates as they go forth to impact their world.

These are exciting times at Decatur Heritage! This plan is visionary and can be transformative in the life of our school. Anticipate a detailed, color brochure highlighting our plans and goals by the of September.

Chairman, Board of Trustees

The Funding Paradigm Much of our time with our consultant during the strategic planning process was spent on grounding ourselves in our mission, vision, and values and then developing strategic initiatives to further that mission. However, just as in a classroom setting, we were given much homework! That homework centered around performing the needed research to be able to move beyond the “what” of the initiative itself into the much more detailed “how, when, and what next,” especially concerning the tactics proposed to meet our stated goals. Without that level of detail, we really don’t have a plan – it’s at best a vision for the future. As Steven Case, the founder of AOL, humorously stated, “A vision without a plan to execute is probably just a hallucination.”

Dreaming is fun; research is work. In Luke 14:28-30, Jesus assumes that counting the cost should be a natural part of any major endeavor. We needed to start with the “how” issues: do we have (or can we acquire) the personnel, the knowledge base, and the resources. Beyond just the start-up, is this tactic sustainable? The “when” question is also more complicated than just a start date. Is the initiative scalable in the event of lack of resources needed to fully implement (i.e. can we and productively run “half” a tactic)? Finally, we have to look at the “what next” question. Is a goal, however laudable, a continued path to the future or is it a potential dead-end if our environment or vision changes? For some of the goals and tactics, this work is substantially complete. For other portions of our plan, the research is still ongoing. As we roll out our strategic plan for your review, we will also keep you informed of these funding details as well. That side of it, while not nearly as exciting, is vital to turning the plan into sustainable, meaningful action. Our consultant, Dr. Alan Pue, warned us very early not to fall for the allure of the phrase “if you build it, they will come.” Many wonderful ministries who marched to that drumbeat now have foreclosure signs out front. The impact we are having on our students is too important for us to skip our homework!

Students in grades 5th-8th spent Monday, May 9, 2011 serving the surrounding community. They were divided into multi-grade groups and assigned a mission project for the day.

Missions included Neighborhood Christian Center; Center for Developmentally Disabled; PACT; tornado disaster relief in Moulton and Tanner; local fire and police stations; serving at the ground-breaking ceremony of a new park, Riverwild, while helping a group of developmentally disabled children enjoy the celebration; SACKS of Love; Meals on Wheels; and Alabama Baptist Children's Home.

Their actions was a way to express appreciation for and gratitude to Decatur's community servants. The day was a huge blessing to those served as well as to those serving!

At the conclusion of the day, students shared where they had seen God during the day. One student spoke “I had the privilege to pray for her.” Other testimonies included, “It was a sight seeing everyone working together.” and “Sometimes we think our life stinks, but we are really blessed.”

world a bit, which I strongly advise every student to try in college! When I returned to Alabama, I got the opportunity to work at Samford’s International Studies Office. This experience helped me discover a passion for sending American students overseas and assisting international students in coming to the U.S., which is something I hope to be able to do in the future. After finishing undergrad, I stayed in Birmingham teaching literacy to American students and English as a second language to international students. Now I am working on a Masters in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers at Monash University in Australia. Sam and I are planning on marrying next year and moving to Asia to teach English.

So, what impact did DHCA have on me? There are several good things, but I can’t overstate how much I appreciate the Biblical training I received at Decatur Heritage, especially the Systematic Theology and Apologetics classes. Like many college students, moving out on my own and facing new people, cultures, and ideas forced me to really question and refine my faith and beliefs. DHCA’s Bible classes gave me a good foundation from which to examine and continue accepting Christ. To all current DHCA students, whether or not you are a Christian, I encourage you to take advantage of these classes, too. Ask questions of Scripture and any of your teachers at Decatur Heritage – seek the truth! Make sure that whatever you believe is not just because of our culture or other people’s expectations.

Thanks to all my teachers at Decatur Heritage; I could tell that you cared and invested in us students. I appreciate that more than I can express, and I hope we make you proud! Thanks also to my graduating class for the good times we had; I hope you guys are all doing well.

WHY WE CHOSE DECATUR HERITAGEAs late in life parents, Joan and I wanted to make sure we made sound decisions about our daughter’seducation. We decided early on the things that were important to us when looking for an educationalfacility for our daughter. The things we were looking for was her safety, the quality of education shewould receive and most importantly, we wanted Gabriell to have a Christian faith based education.

With both of our careers being the Decatur area, we decided to place Gabriell at Decatur HeritageChristian Academy in the 3K program. From the start it was very evident this was much more thana daycare facility. During the 4K & 5K years, we noticed how happy our daughter was with DHCA.Gabriell learned at a fast pace which made us feel confident in the choice we had made. Gabriellcontinued to learn at a fast pace in first through sixth grade.

Joan and I credit most of her success to her teachers. Her teachers helped us with reinforcing ourexpectations of working hard and always trying to do her best. Being very satisfied with Gabriell’sprogress in her studies, we quickly noticed the loving environment she was in thanks to her teachers and the staff at DHCA.We noticed that the teachers at DHCA seem to treat the students (our daughter included) like their own children. The teachers are concerned for each child’s success and want the students to learn as much as the parents.

From junior high up to her present grade (10TH), the family environment grew stronger with sports, her curriculum and the friendships, making her experience with DHCA even more positive. Our daughter will be a junior this school year. When Gabriell completes her senior year in May of 2013, she will have spent 15 years of her blessed life at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy.

We know that as Gabriell progresses the next two school years, DHCA will have helped her to be ahead of the general population entering college in the fall of 2013. But more important she will be ahead in her personal spiritual life away from home. She will always have the faith that DHCA has helped us to grow in her as the basis for making future decisions that will help her navigate through life challenges.

In sharing our experiences with Decatur Heritage, Joan & I would like to thank Mr. Mayo and his staff, the wonderful teachers and the Board for their leadership in making Decatur Heritage a reality. We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for making it possible for our daughter to experience a loving and godly environment while providing her with a great education and a wonderful school experience.

God Bless and Thanks Again,

Brett & Joan Jeffreys
