On this second Sunday of Advent our readings present us with two great advent figures Isaiah and John the Baptist. In our first reading the prophet Isaiah foresaw the day when God would raise up a Messianic King long after King David’s throne had been overthrown and vacant for centuries. God promised that he would raise up a new king from the stump of Jesse, the father of David. Then, in today’s gospel, John the Bap- tist begins his public ministry. He announces the time of redemption is at hand. As we reflect upon this proc- lamation that the Kingdom is at hand, we must also look at what it means for us as 21 st century Christians to “prepare the way of the Lord.” Like John it means that we must step up to the role God has called us to ful- fill. It’s about each of us taking the time to listen to God’s voice in our lives during this time of Advent. It means putting aside time to get involved and try various ministries on for size. One will ultimately find that right fit that uses our talents in a way that we can feel good about. In this way we can make a contribution of our time and talents to the Kingdom of God! St Simon Stock/St Joseph Parish like all the other parishes in the Archdiocese of NY will be participat- ing in “Reconciliation Monday” on December 16th, from 4pm – 8pm. During this time Fr Nicholas, or I or both will be available in the Church for confession. As John the Baptist reminds us in today’s gospel Advent is a time to: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!". It is a time to reflect upon our lives and seek the forgiveness of God through the sacrament of reconciliation so that we are better prepared for the birth of our Savior at Christmas. There will be no other Parish Advent Reconciliation service. Also every parish in the Archdiocese should have priests available during this time so if you can’t make it here there are plenty of op- tions in the other parishes in the Archdiocese. The Triduum for Our Lady of Guadalupe begins tomorrow and takes place each evening until the feast day on Thursday, December 12 th ! The schedule of events are in the bulletin. The Guadalupe celebrations very often are the largest Marian celebrations we have in the parish. The Virgin Mary of course is very much an Advent figure in the readings during Advent. All are invited to attend these celebrations! The colder weather is upon us. We here at St Simon Stock/St Joseph distribute both the body and blood at the Eucharist when we have sufficient ministers. I would like to encourage all who may have a cold, are not feeling well or have the flu to refrain from receiving the precious blood until you feel better. It is per- fectly acceptable to receive just the body of Christ especially if you are not feeling well. It also keeps others from getting sick! Occasionally dioceses ask that parishes not distribute the Eucharist under both species for health reasons. If this happens we will follow the directions of the Archdiocese. And of course, if you are really sick, please refrain from coming to mass. It certainly is not a serious sin to legitimately miss mass be- cause you are sick and likely is not even a venial sin! Last week we had in the bulletin information about the centennial of the parish which we will be cele- brating in 2020. This past week we made a reservation to have a banquet at “Maestros” catering hall here in the Bronx on Sunday, March 29 th at 4pm, the day after the special mass on Saturday to mark the exact date of the first mass held here at St Simon Stock. Please mark your calendars! The Centennial Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, January 7 th and at that time we will begin selling tickets for the event and give more in- formation on all the events planned so far for the Centennial. Finally, I once again want to thank all who participated in our Renew and Rebuild fundraising program for the parish. Each person who made a pledge should receive from the Archdiocese an envelope and card that they can use to send in their donations. It is important that you use these envelopes and cards so that your do- nations get properly credited. Please do not bring pledges into the parish office. If you have not received any mailing from the Archdiocese by the end of the year, please come and see me so that I can check to see if your pledge was recorded by the Archdiocese. I am eternally grateful for all who contribute to the parish their time, talent and treasure. This is a busy time in the parish and I am sure in your families! I assure you that I will do my best to see to it that all the funds given to the parish are used wisely and appropriately. -Fr. Mike From Fr. Mike’s Desk FRIARS & STAFF Pastor: Very Rev.

mente enfermo, no vaya a misa.
