Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Thank you everyone for coming to the Lenten Mission in the past three days! A special thanks to Martha Courchene and every-

one who organized the refreshments for the mission! Also thank you Phil Jennings for arranging everything for the Lenten mis-

sion.

We are not quite at the half-way point for Lent. So how is everyone doing with their Lenten commitments?? Lent is not a race

or a competition in which you need to either start at the beginning or you can’t start at all. Late-comers are not excluded or ban-

ished to sit out for the remainder of the season. Lent is a season in which we can grow closer to God either by full participation

or by partial participation. (Of course, the more participation the better. “Full and active participation” is a familiar Church

catch-phrase.) If you have not yet decided what path you’ll take in your journey to grow closer to the Good Lord.... do not sit

this one out and wait until next Lent!! Do now what you can do and grow as you are able for the rest of the season.

If you have been coming to daily Mass since the beginning of Lent, the readings for daily Mass have pleaded with us to turn

away from sin. We heard the prophet Isaiah (55:7) say, “turn from your sinful ways.” From the prophet Ezekiel (18:21), we

heard, “you wicked man, turn away from all your sins.” Over and over again, the prophets plead with us to stop sinning. This

Sunday’s gospel, Jesus gives an example of a fig tree that was planted in an orchard, ‘For three years now I have come in

search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ three years with no fruit,

clearly the fig tree is dead and should be cut down, but the gardener tells the owner to give the fig tree one more year. During

that year the gardener promises to fertilize the plant, to water and to cultivate the soil. The parable of the fig tree tells us how

to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation. How we can stop sinning. Frequent confession can get our sins under control.

Keep confessing a sin, and that sin fades away. Remember the fig tree, no gardener would water the tree once a year and ex-

pect it to grow. So too, we should not expect our sins to disappear if we confess only once a year. We fertilize the plant, we

cultivate the soil, we cleanse our souls by frequent confession.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Lent is a time for all of us to examine ourselves to see whether or not we are bearing fruit

before God. If we are not living our lives like God calls us to, please have the courage before it it’s too late to ask God for His

Divine Mercy, love and forgiveness. If the fig tree was cut down by its owner, surely it would die forever; let none of us end up

like the fig tree. The choice is up to each and every one of us but don’t forget that our lives are in God’s hands. Today we live,

tomorrow we might be gone. God decides who lives and who dies and who will be with Him forever in heaven. Surely, He will

reward those who love Him and bear much fruit before Him. Let every one of us bear much fruit now so that we may have life

with God now and forever in heaven.

This weekend, Bishop Gary Gordon sent out a letter asking us to support the campaign to protect the conscience rights of our

health care workers on the new law of Euthanasia. I ask that you read the Bishop’s letter and sign the Postcard which will be

given to you during Mass.

which were inspired through the study of Laudato Si’ in the St.

Edward’s adult faith formation sessions that ran from Septem-

ber 2015 to February 2016. Each summarizes a number of

units as they were covered sequentially through the 14 weekly

sessions the group journeyed through to better understand and

embrace the words of the Pope’s Encyclical.

and the wisdom of our Church,

for the voices that cry out

from community advocates and

for the written and visual media

that stir our hearts to love more

creatures, humanity and nature as brothers and sisters.

May we always be sensitive to how we use progress

Dear Parishioners:

We are in Cuba, the weather is good, and we are hiking

giving out clothing, medical stuff, school supplies to those

in real need. Cuba in many regards is a third world coun-

try, you see it within the homes and small villages. Like

any third world country, the people are incredible, always

willing to give you that huge smile and wanting to help

you.

On February 16th, the ministries within the parish met for

discussions related to how each ministry benefited from

the Ministry Fair; for the most it was felt like a huge suc-

cess. The plan would be to try to have one every two or

three years. Discussion also took place on how ministries

can work together to build the Kingdom Of God, to build

our community at St Edwards. We learned a lot from each

other, and we can build on what we heard. One thing is we

need new blood, we need young people to join in ministry,

we are an aging parish and we need your help. New pa-

rishioners, young people, there are lots of ways to becom-

ing involved; talk to me, or Father, we would be happy to

meet with you.

Thanks to all at St Edwards who give their time, talents

and treasures, to make St. Edwards what it is today.

Formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, the Anoint-

ing of the Sick is a ritual of healing, appropriate not only for

physical, but also for mental and spiritual sickness. please call

Privacy legislation in BC prevents the release of information

regarding hospital admissions. If you or someone you love are

admitted to a hospital and would like a visit from Fr. Luyen or

Eucharistic Minister, please call your parish office to leave a

If you wish to become Catholic, this coming Fall the parish of

St. Edward’s will offer a series of meetings called R.C.I.A.

which means Rite of Christian initiation for Adults. If you are

Mass Honouring The Blessed Virgin Mary

On the 1st Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. a special Mass is

holy rosary. During this Mass there is anointing of the Sick.

PAD for donations? PAD stands for Pre-Authorized Debit. It works exactly like the pre-authorizations many people have for their mortgage or

insurance payments, which are withdrawn automatically from their bank accounts. By using PAD, your donations are au-

tomatically withdrawn once a month from your chequing account.

Why should I use PAD? PAD means that your donations are made regularly. It eliminates the worry of searching for cash, writing cheques,

searching for envelopes or missing a week of donations when you are away. When you are on holidays or attend a differ-

ent Church for a weekend, the lights and power still need to be on at St. Edward’s. A regular financial commitment from

our parishioners keeps our doors open and our Ministries active. PAD means that your commitment is always there.

When are withdrawals made? Withdrawals from your bank account will occur according to your request.

Can I donate to our Charities with PAD? Yes, all the Charities currently supported by our Parish through envelope donations can be made by PAD. One tax receipt

will be issued for your donations but your gifts will be directed to the charities you choose when you set up your PAD.

What if I want to make changes? If you move, change banks, wish to cancel the plan or for any other reason you need to change your PAD commitment,

simply contact the parish office.

How do I sign up?

There are 2 simple forms to fill out at the Parish office. You will also need to attach a VOID cheque on the application

form. The cheque must indicate your bank account information which will enable the parish to make your authorized

withdrawals.

To date we have 47 parishioners using this carefree method of supporting St. Edward’s Parish.

The Knights of the Columbus

This weekend the Knights will be collecting change in the foyer for their seminarian program, “Pennies from

Heaven”.

This Sunday the Knights invite all parishioners to come downstairs to the Church hall to enjoy a great pancake

breakfast. Bring your family and friends. It’s a great gathering!

Lenten Penitential Service at St. Edward’s Parish

Our Lenten Penitential Service will be celebrated on March 10th at 7:00 p.m. It is a great time to prepare for

Easter. All are encouraged to attend.

March Family Mass Date Changed

Please note that the Family Mass in March will be celebrated on March 13th, 2016 (the 2nd Sunday of the

month).

First Scrutiny of the Elect (Catechumens)

This weekend we will celebrate the Rite of the First Scrutiny with James Black, Nicole Garrow, Luka De Melo

and Ethan Giles who will be entering the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.

The scrutinies are rites for self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The also brings

out, and then strengthens all that is upright, strong and good. Therefore, the scrutinies are celebrated to protect

them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

At the First Scrutiny, the elect are presented with the text of the Creed. As we listen to the gospel of the Samari-

tan woman at the well, their spirits are filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is the living water.

As a community we are called to pray for our brothers and sisters that they may progress in genuine self-

knowledge through serious examination of their lives and true repentance during these final weeks of prepara-

tion .
