This past year has been a time of transition
for Bethany Children’s Home. With a record
low census during the summer of 2013,
Bethany was in the midst of a budget deficit
of nearly 4 million dollars. Change was
needed!
Staff downsizing, creating new programs,
evaluating leadership, and adjusting our
entire operation was necessary to lower
and streamline expenses, increase revenue
sources, and become more efficient. I am
pleased to tell you that the deficit is nearly
all gone and the empty cottages will all be
opened by January 2015. Our census is currently up 75% over last year
and by January we should reach 125% ahead of last year.
Bethany has been blessed to host the Helping Hands program. To date,
we have served 100 children who were in desperate need of help in
finding their families. We are pleased to report that every child who has
come into our care has been reunited in an average of 10-12 days.
As we move forward, Bethany is investing in our cottages by completing
significant renovations, including new paint, carpet, mattresses, and
living room and recreation room furniture. We are completing an energy
audit that will reduce costs and assist in identifying the best resources to
replace our 40 year old furnaces, replace roofs on cottages, update
windows and doors, and provide energy efficient lighting.
We are looking into new programs for Bethany. From a business
perspective, we must diversify and have numerous options at all times.
Looking ahead, our goal is to fill and keep filled every bed on campus
while continually improving our services.
We are so thankful for your continued support and will need your help
more than ever as we continue to grow and serve the youth in our local
communities. Bethany is partially funded by government reimburse-
ments to help kids in our care, but we could not continue our ministry
without the generous support of our Churches, Alumni, Community
Friends, Local Businesses and Foundations. I truly believe God has me
here to help Bethany financially, however the longer I am here the more
compelled I am to change hearts as well. With every new, hurting child
that enters our doors comes a new challenge. Showing them love, care,
respect, and the love of God is our ultimate goal. I believe if Bethany
takes care of our children, God will take care of us.
Thank you to all of our friends who have supported us over the past 151
years. We are blessed with your gifts and we are happy to present to
you the 2013-2014 Annual Report.

How long have you been part of the Bethany family? I’ve lived at Bethany for about three years.
What do you want people to know about Bethany? I want people to know that Bethany is a great place for youth who need help getting their lives on track. I would not be where I am without Bethany making sure I’m in school and working on my goals. The staff at Bethany genuinely care about us everyday, and they care about our futures. I want to continue my education and gain the necessary skills and experience to work with at risk youth so that I can give back to the community in the same way that Bethany has helped me.
How has Bethany impacted your life? Bethany has helped me build my social skills. I’ve learned positive coping skills rather than doing something negative when I’m having a problem. I’ve learned how to identify my emotions and process my thoughts and actions. I’ve learned life skills to help with my future, which is very valuable.
What would you say to other youth who could benefit from BCH? Take advantage of everything Bethany has to offer, just take it all and use it. Get everything you can from this opportunity to learn and grow.

Please tell us what you do at Bethany. I started working here in January 2000 as an Administrative Assis-tant in the Business Office, became the Accountant in 2006, and moved into my current position as Development Coordinator in 2013.
What do you want people to know about Bethany? I want people to know that Bethany is working to strengthen family relationships. The main goal for the youth in our care is to reunify the child with their family. There’s a lot of hard work involved in achieving that goal and I want people to know that we’re doing it successfully.
Why do you support Bethany? Our Donors help put the “HOME” in Bethany Home. Our funding only pays for necessities like food, clothing, shelter and supervision – and that’s a very important piece. But I can help a youth experience activities like hanging Christmas ornaments on a Christmas tree and having homemade cookies and hot chocolate afterwards; Wednesday night activities down at the pool that include everyone eating the supper meal together and playing games and swimming afterwards; a special day at Knoebel’s Grove where our kids can go on rides as much as they want and eat amusement-park food; and every youth receiving a birthday card and birthday gift that tells them someone is celebrating the fact that they were born.
How has Bethany impacted your life? Besides meeting my husband
here, I would say the thing that amazes me every day is the capacity for caring about others that I see in our kids. Passing one of our kids in the hall or as they’re coming home from school there’s always a “Hi Miss” and 9 times out of 10 a big hug to go along with it. These kids can’t live with their family for one reason or another, and yet they still get up, go to school and get on with their day. And at the end of that day they’re happy to see me. How can that not impact your life in a good way?

Your Bethany Family
Meet New Goshenhoppen UCC
Tell us about your involvement with BCH. New Goshenhoppen in East Greenville, PA has historical ties to BCH. The congregation is active with Bethany’s mission and has completed several service projects in recent years. Members of the congregation have visited Bethany’s campus to renovate outdoor benches for the youth, to clean and paint the campus pavilion, and plan to complete more projects on Bethany’s campus in the upcoming year. New Gosh has adopted cottages for the holidays and provided Christmas gifts for youth and has welcomed Bethany to our church services, concerts, and events. The congregation has also provided mission trip opportunities for BCH youth.
What do you want people to know about Bethany? God has a strong presence at Bethany Children’s Home. The staff and youth are committed to their mission and we hope to continue to participate in all of the good that’s happening at Bethany!
Why do you support Bethany? New Goshenhoppen UCC Christ works and serves at Bethany Children’s Home not only because of our historical and religious ties to Bethany, but also because we’re Christians. We believe that we’ve been called to do the work of Christ everywhere, especially where there’s a need. We have been inspired by Bethany’s commitment over the years to providing a home and care for children who are in need, including the new Helping Hands program for immigrant children.
Planned gifts made to Bethany Children's Home provide for the
future of troubled youth and families Bethany serves. Your
contribution may be undesignated or designated to our
endowment. Today, the endowment subsidizes many of our
specialty programs and services so we can provide for the growing number of youth
requiring relief from abuse and crisis situations. These funds make BCH a “home” filled
with trust, love, and compassion.
A special gift in your will. That’s the way most people make gifts of accumulated assets. It
can be a direct bequest of a stated amount of money. However you might like to consider a
percentage bequest. You give a percentage of your estate instead of a defined dollar amount
because you never know what the value of your estate may be at your death. A residuary
bequest is another option. It is when the remainder of your estate is given to Bethany after
everything and everyone else is paid or remembered. Sample language is available.
A life insurance policy. You may assign dividends or name Bethany as your primary or
contingent beneficiary for all or part of the proceeds of the policy. Tax benefits may come
with life insurance benefits, and you should ask your life insurance agent for details.
With retirement plans. You might consider naming BCH for part or all of the funds in your
retirement plan after your loved ones are not available to receive the benefits. The person or
financial institution handling your IRA, other retirement plan or profit sharing account can
help.
Or you can make a gift and receive an income. Bethany offers:
Charitable Gift Annuities - $1,000 minimum gift
Deferred Charitable Gift Annuities - $1,000 minimum
Pooled Income Fund - $2,000 minimum gift
Charitable Remainder Trusts - $50,000 minimum gift
