All ZET ticketsEveryone loves strolling through the city center’s bedaz-zled streets during Advent in Zagreb, but the event can be a nightmare for drivers. Hordes of people enjoying festival events make for traffic jams. Beat the car crowds: catch a parking spot early on and take a tram downtown. Zagreb has over 25,000 public parking spac-es, with your best bet being public parking garages. You can park in garages all day and even all night if it’s safer to hop on a night tram after the fest. Five city garages include EV charging stations, and some are home to works by Zagreb’s best street artists.

Zagreb Advent food is seriously delicious. And the earlier you visit,
the more challenging it is to keep your waistline intact. One trick can help, and that is to participate in the making of the feast.Aside from taking your taste buds to heaven and back, all our festive food has something in common. It is either made tiny or it gets broken down into tiny parts. The process is finicky and labor-intensive, which means it will stop you from letting loose entirely. Let’s go through some typical dishes.
*The official logo for Croatia’s presidency of the European Union was designed by Iva Primorac, a student at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Architecture. Her design “Typographic Chessboard” is named after the motif of Croatia’s coat of arms.
French salad has vegetables chopped to the size of a small pea. It’s a dish that galvanizes the whole family to cut away at carrots, potatoes and gherkins.
Cod comes either as a stew or a pate. The former has flakes of smoked fish while the latter keeps only the taste, and none of the fish’s shape. It takes a strong hand to beat cod into a smooth texture.
Turkey is paired with mlinci. This traditional pasta is first rolled out into a sheet, baked on the griddle to a crisp and then broken into bits.
Finally, dessert: a myriad of hand-made biscuits. They need to be in the tiniest possible shapes and in the biggest possible vari-ations in order to properly mark Christmas.
WHEN IN ZAGREB
The CathedralTake in Croatia’s largest sacral
building, the neo-Gothic cathedral that has stood in this very spot for eight centuries, despite several fires and earthquakes.
St. Mark’s Church Snag a selfie with the color-
ful roof tiles as the background and then peep inside this Romanesque eye-candy that hides artwork by Ivan Meštro-vić as well as Jozo Kljakov-ić’s spectacu-lar frescoes.
Museum of Arts and Crafts
Peek inside this grand building de-signed by Hermann Bollé in histor-icist style; it’s one of Zagreb’s first purpose-built edifices. Since 1880 the Museum has been preserving traditional crafts and arts.
Museum of Contemporary Art Check out the outstanding col-
lection of contemporary art by top Croatian and international artists, housed inside this meander-shaped building in Novi Zagreb.
Museum of Broken Relationships
Mend your broken heart or pay homage to your past romances at this quirky little museum in Zagreb’s Upper Town, with exhibits donated from around the world.
Mimara MuseumAdmire the large private col-
lection by Ante & Wiltrud Topić Mi-mara, on display inside the grande dame of Zagreb’s museums, housed inside a neo-Renaissance palace.
