Throughout its 40-year history, the Research Centre has made several important strides in research focusing on various aspects of diabetes and its complications. ACADEMIC COURSES Several education and podiatry training are being offered by the centre. WHO (WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION) COLLABORATING CENTRE The centre has been designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating centre for research, education and training in diabetes since 2002. As a WHO collaborating centre, it has been associated with many national and international organizations, such as the University of Southampton in the UK, NIRT and Central Leather Research Institute in Chennai. The centre has also been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India) as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) since 1988. M.V. CENTRE FOR DIABETIC FOOT CARE, PODIATRY, RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT This Centre has saved the legs of over 70,000 patients by providing advanced wound care facilities like Hyperbaric Oxygen Magnetic Therapy and other advanced methods. There is an in-house foot wear manufacturing unit to provide foot wear for all patients with various types of foot complications. PROF. Situated in Royapuram, MV Hospital for Diabetes was started by the late Professor M. Viswanathan, a doyen of Diabetology in India in the year 1954, as a general hospital. With Professor M. Viswanathan’s professional and administrative leadership, the hospital soon grew to achieve the status of a teaching institution of International excellence. Celebrating this glorious institution’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu Dr. K. Rosaiah was present as the chief guest at a function that was held at Phiroj Club Wala Memorial Hall in Royapuram, on March 14, 2014. Many eminent dignitaries graced the occasion including Dr. SM Sadikot, President of the International Diabetes Federation, Dr. Elizabeth Seaquist, President of the American Diabetes Association USA, Dr. Gojka Roglic, Responsible Officer for Diabetes WHO, Geneva, Dr.V Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and Dr. Muruganathan, Immediate Past President of API. VISWANATHAN DIABETES RESEARCH CENTRE At MV Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram, research plays a pivotal role in the institution’s success and growth. The Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre was established in 1972 and ever since it has been making significant contributions in all areas of diabetes health care and research covering key areas such as epidemiological studies, prevention of diabetes and its complications, diabetes education and training, biochemical and genetic aspects of diabetes, management of diabetes, economics of diabetes care and so on at the national and international levels.
