DISTRICT 9 SCHOOL AND STUDENT NEWS
Brianna Guzman, Sophomore at South Dade Sr., was selected as a finalist for the Emerging Journalist Award which recognizes excellence among ninth and tenth graders.
Palmetto Sr. Boys and Girls Water Polo teams placed second in the district champi-onships. Jazz Band, Jazz Combo and soloists received superior ratings at the State Music Performance Assessment in Cape Coral. Orchestra received an Excellent and the Jazz Band a superior, finishing 2nd overall and 1st in their classification at the Disney Music Festival Competition and Peter McCann, a sophomore sax-ophonist, was awarded the Most Outstanding Jazz Soloist.
The Odyssey of the Mind Teams from Howard Drive, P a lm et to M id d le and Palmetto Senior placed first and second at the State com-petition and qualified to com-pete at the OM World Finals held at Iowa State University later this coming month. Palmetto Elementary placed 4th in State .
Three Richmond Heights Middle School students were the accepted into the Miami Dade College Dual Enrollment Program. Antoinette Mena was accepted at the early age of 13 and is currently com-pleting her first four college credits with grades of “A”.
Catherine, Julie, and Rebecca from Southwood Middle School received 1st place for their vocal performances in the 4th Annual Parade of Stars Talent Show.
Southwood’s Girls' JV & Varsity Basketball teams remain UNDEFEATED.
BioTECH is the 1st place winner of the BrandsMart USA Premio Verde Escolar.

Coral Reef's Social Studies Honor Society participated in the National History Bowl Championships held in Washington DC. The team members, Gianni LaVecchia, Jacob Covas, Andres R o d r i g u e z a n d D i e g o Velasquez, earned 6th place in the Varsity Division’s Upper Bracket.
Sandra Garcia, a freshman in the Health Sciences Academy at Coral Reef Sr., was nomi-nated as a Delegate for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders.
Palmetto Senior High student, Caitlyn Chong, received a scholarship from Junior League of Miami.
Coral Reef Sr. students, Michael Warrell, Zachary Quevedo, Analiese Brown, Samantha Hall and Melissa Martinez were awarded Coral Reef PTSA Scholarships.
At the April Board Meeting our item recognized a student, their principal and CAP Advi-sor, from each district during the Annual Academic Signing Ceremony. After each s t u d e n t s i g n e d t h e i r academic scho la rsh ip , Norberto Orellana, a senior at the Homestead School for Advanced Studies (SAS), representing all students who had to overcome major barriers and obstacles to g ra d u a t e , s i g n e d h i s scholarship. Norberto, despite his disability and being homeless, has a 4.0 grade point average and completed 61 university credits. He will be attending Colorado College in the fall with a full paid scholarship.
