Communicationprocess by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding
• Thought: First, information exists in the mind of the sender. This can be a concept, idea, information, or feelings.
• Encoding: Next, a message is sent to a receiver in words or other symbols.
• Decoding: lastly, the receiver translatesthe words or symbols into a concept or information that he or she canunderstand.
Two main types of communication:
• Verbal: involves noises, vocal chords, words, language [conveying a message with words/sounds]
• Nonverbal: involves body language, gesture, facial expression, eye contact, hairstyle, clothing, etc. [conveying a message without words/sounds]
