Wednesday March 1 2017 From Sue What a night and what a carnival! Whilst the weather calmed, the children could not have been more excited as they watched the rides and stalls be set up. The carnival organising team had ticked all boxes earlier in the day so by 2.30pm the children were simply watching the clock! Demand for food started early and the pace maintained throughout the evening. We were treated to a range of food styles and options with many of the stalls literally selling out. Highlights of the carnival included: The rides - we had a wide range catering for varied interests and confidence levels. Bad Boys and Cha Cha appeared to be favourites Activities on the oval - we were spoilt with choice given the treadmill challenge, interactive and balance activities, running time trials, soccer and footy goal kick, footy handball, netball goal shooting, massage, tug of war etc. Junior rides and amusements – the animal farm, merry-go-round and chair-o-plane were very popular Sideshow alley – proved to be very popular with the chocolate toss, face painting and tattoos and the lolly hunt being standout favourites The Boutique Market – situated in the quadrangle provided a welcome respite for many. The stalls offered numerous bargains and the Pimms and Champagne Bar was well patronised. Feedback from parents confirmed the entertainment and ambience in this area was extra special The carnival pop up with Relish This, trash and treasure, second hand clothing and books were busy with shoppers looking for a bargain. The entertainment on the various stages was continuous and easy to listen to throughout the night The atmosphere that prevailed was fantastic with the whole school community working together, parents, staff and children having fun and supporting our school.

My sincere thanks go to the hundreds of parents and staff who volunteered on the night with many working tirelessly and continuously. This event is a perfect example of ‘many hands make light work!’ To those who stayed back with clean up on the Friday evening and came back again on the Saturday, I am sincerely grateful to you all. My congratulations and gratitude go to the members of the organising committee who began work and planning on the carnival many months ago, with meticulous attention to detail, they brought the carnival to a hugely successful fruition: Katie and Pete Flockart, Emily Beasley, Fi Gathercole, Kim Phillips, Deb Hopkins, Nadine Seddon, Mike Cahill, Kath Blackham, Kylie Jones, Karen Unkles, Kas Hodge, Suzana Bishop, Nic Jacobs, Susie Walker, Kirsty Hunt, Alex Farndfors, Mel Taranto, Georgia McGowan, Emily Spicer Stuart, Kirsty Reynolds, Cas Stremski, Annie Weber, Julia Kent Hughes, Mary Cole, Marco Dip, Sharon Fulton, Sally Stewart, Justine Tuffley, Audra Morris, Sandi Scaunich, Sam Stockwell, Kate Bogue, Bee Ling Goh, Melinda Pordage, Rachel Devine, Bec Wilson, Ali Buckley, Cecile Lopez-Brown, Rose Karamitos, Sophie Graves, Kim O’Donnell, Marc Stafford, Leigh Witney, Anne Marie Bowen, Chris Sando, Miranda Scales, Marcel Ghoukassian and Tony Briggs. The event raised approximately $60,000, this is an outstanding result. We are still finalising accounts and the final figure will be announced shortly. Student Reflections on the Carnival I liked the food - especially the hot dogs and the jumping castle. Alexa Tripis FA I loved the bubble soccer, you had to dodge people. I was pretty good at this. I ate sausages and fairy floss. Thomas Gill FA I liked playing pin the leg on the skeleton at my dad’s stand. I can’t remember where I put the leg, but it wasn’t in the right spot, I had a blindfold on my eyes – it was my mum’s that she uses to get to sleep. I had a hamburger for my dinner, it was really good. Arlo Ghoukassian 1A I liked going on the trampoline in Ludstone Street. I had to be strapped in so I was safe, it was really tight so I did feel safe. When I bounced really high I was a bit scared. I thought the lolly hunt was really good too, I found lots of chewy ones, and they are my favourite. I couldn’t even count them because I had so many! Hannah Bogue 1A The chocolate toss, the lolly search and the Bad Boys ride were my favourite activities. I came with my step brother and friends and we had a great time. I recommend that the carnival activities be the same next time. Mason O’Keefe 3E The bubble soccer was really good; I enjoyed being able to bump into people and rolling around. It felt a bit strange; you couldn’t feel a lot because you were inside the bubble. The stalls inside the quadrangle were good; I bought a necklace and some badges. My suggestion is that the carnival committee keep the Fantasy Island and the Bubble Soccer for next time. Chloe Bonner 3E My favourite activity was the spinning tea cups, I went in the same tea cup as my little brother and my friend Rory, we were spinning around very fast. Freya Cullum2E My favourite ride was the Cha Cha because it was really fast and loads of fun. The bubble blower in the quadrangle was good fun; I was trying to blow the biggest possible bubble. Rory Greenan 2E

I thought the carnival was fantastic. I really enjoyed the inflatables because you could jump around as hard as you wanted to. I loved the Cha Cha, I like spinning rides I don’t seem to get sick. I spent most of my time on the rides. Wes Sando 4B I enjoyed the bungee trampolines, it felt exciting to be up so high; I felt like I could nearly touch the clouds. I also liked doing the jungle maze, it was quite challenging to find your way out and I did eventually get out. The food was really delicious – especially the sausages. The background music was easy to listen to and it made me feel happy. Zairha Sweetman 4B There was a great atmosphere with the bands, singing, the rides and everyone excited. I loved the Bad Boys ride, it rotated so fast it made me feel scared and exhilarated for most the time. Joseph Weber 5B I was impressed with the turn out on the night; I noticed that were loads of St Mary’s kids and virtually all of our kids came. I loved the food and rides, my favourite ride was Cha Cha, it was good fun and didn’t make me feel sick like Bad Boys did! I found the chocolate toss quite challenging, it was difficult to get the coin to land and them remain on the block of chocolate. I preferred the rides from the previous carnival – I don’t remember feeling sick with the previous rides; however I did enjoy all other aspects of our carnival. Olivia Reynolds 6A I thought it was a great idea to have the finalists from Hampton’s Got Talent to perform at the carnival; they had a huge audience on Friday night. They must have felt honoured to perform in front of such a big crowd. I really enjoyed the inflatables up on the oval. There was a lot of variety in all of the rides, racing across the water and changing lanes was great fun. I finished my time absolutely drenched! Fortunately I came prepared with a change of clothes. Lucas Rankine 6A The carnival had a place for everyone. The quadrangle was much quieter than the other areas, the oval had some sports’ challenges, there was plenty of energy around the rides – I get motion sickness so I stuck to rock climbing which I really enjoyed Emily Burns 5B School Council Elections This year in the council elections, the number of nominations matched the number of vacancies; therefore we did not need to go to a ballot. Relay for Life Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March Relay for Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. The relay is a chance for the Hampton community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers; to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives. There are three ceremonies Opening Ceremony: 4pm on the Saturday Candlelight Ceremony: 8.30pm on the Saturday Closing Ceremony: 10am on the Sunday We are encouraging our Year 6s to support this event at the Sandringham Athletics Track, whilst children may choose to stay overnight, it is not compulsory. This is a community event and is not organised by the school, although I am delighted to note that our children and families have enthusiastically and actively supported it over the last few years. For a group of children to stay overnight, adult supervision will be essential. Participants will need to sleep in a tent and to bring sleeping bags, suitable clothing and food. In previous years, the tents have accommodated up to 12 children approximately. Ideally it would be helpful to have one or two parents volunteer to coordinate the Year 6s, particularly with the overnight component. It is essential to have an adult presence for the duration of the event; however this can be rostered to share the load. I understand that a large number of Year 6s have expressed interest in supporting this event, please note: participation is not compulsory. If parents have any further queries, please contact me at school. Hampton Street Art Trail unveiling this Friday This Friday our Art Captains and the mayor will be unveiling the final sculpture in the Hampton Street Art Trail. Some of our amazing musicians will also be creating the perfect atmosphere and the local newspaper will be recording the event. Make your way down Hampton Street straight after school on Friday to be part of the celebration. Details re unveiling of sculpture are:- Date: Friday, 3 March Time: 3.50m to 4.15 pm Place: Corner of Thomas St and Hampton St, Hampton (in the small public space at the side of the shops)

Assembly Well done to 6A who led the singing of the national anthem at assembly yesterday. Congratulations go to 6A who performed very impressively on African drums. The children were mesmerised by the volume, intensity and rhythm evident in their playing.
