Newsletter The deadline for submitting articles for the FEBRUARY issue of the Rebelation is January 25th. E-mail Tiffany D. Parks ([email protected]) with your articles.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION... Application Process for Admission The application process for NEW STUDENTS for the

2016-2017 school year will take place beginning Monday, January 11, 2016. Visit our website,

www.tchs.net, and click the Admissions tab for more information and to apply on-line.

The deadline to apply is Friday, January 29, 2016.

NEW STUDENTS - IMPORTANT Siblings of students currently enrolled at TCH must follow these same procedures and comply with the deadlines. All sections of the on-line application

must be completed and all supplemental documentation must be uploaded. Failure to do so will result in the student’s application being placed on hold, thereby delaying the admissions process,

and the student will be placed in line with others in the wait pool. There is no application fee; registration fees are due during the on-line

registration process, following acceptance to TCH, February 24-March 4, 2016.

Due to the volume of applications, all deadlines will be strictly enforced.

REGISTRATION-CURRENT TCH STUDENTS Current TCH students are not required to re-apply for

admissions but are required to register on Renweb during February 24-March 4, 2016. It is mandatory

that parents register their students within the specified dates to assure their enrollment status and to

avoid the late penalty. More information about the registration process will be emailed to all accepted students and current TCH students on or before February 24, 2016. For questions regarding registration, current TCH students may contact

Lori Beslin (235-5711 Ext. 244 or [email protected]) and new students may contact Maria Hanes

(337-235-5711 Ext. 1 or [email protected]).

Marty Heintz - Assistant Principal

Question 1: How did your student do during the First Semester? Did he or she live up to potential? Do you see

room for improvement? Is your student on the path to academic success?

Question 2: If the answer to the above warrants, what plan have you as the parent come up with to move your

student toward academic success?

Oh, oh – I can sense some discomfort and maybe even some indignation with that last question. You pay, and

sacrifice in many cases, to send your children to a good school so shouldn’t success be guaranteed? My plan? What

about the school, the teacher, even my kid? Isn’t it their plan?

Yes, I am asking, what plan do you, as the parents, have? Not what plan does Mrs. Heintz have, or what plan does

Teurlings Catholic have, or the teacher have, and not even what plan does the student have. No, I am asking, “As

the parent, the adult really in control, what do you think needs to be done to ensure that your own child succeeds

academically?”

Of course, we (faculty, staff, and administration) will provide the instruction, will provide feedback, and will guide

your students through the 6 hours or so of instructional time we provide each school day. But, we don’t go home

with your student so the only time we have is that 7:30-2:30 window with six hours of actual instruction time

metered out in 70-minute doses five times in each 7-day class rotation or, to make it easy to see, for the 2,250

minutes of instruction we provide in the 10,080 minutes in a week.

We can provide the information needed, the classroom instruction, the notes, the PowerPoints, Google Classroom,

the discussions, videos and practice problems – but it is up to your student and you to see that homework is

completed, Math XL and Mastering Biology are finished, reading assignments are current, projects are done and that

students study for tests and quizzes. It is the parent, not the teacher and student, who decides when a student has

become overloaded with outside activities, leaving little time for academic work. It is the parent, not the teacher

and student, who can step in when the student is too tired from nonacademic issues and cut out screen time, limit

social occasions and extracurricular activities, rearrange priorities, and put the student’s focus back on academics –

long before the issue becomes so critical that the student fails to meet minimum standards to participate or worse,

we, the school, have to fail the student.

For those of you with older students, here’s another question: when was the last time you checked RenWeb? Many

seniors (and even juniors) tell me their parents never check and I see evidence of that every year when we get into

the spring semester and I have to call a surprised parent about a potential senior failure or a potential loss of TOPS.

Yes, we can provide all kinds of advice for you here at school. The teacher can tell you what the student is missing

in class and how to study for tests and quizzes; the guidance counselors can help you find tutors and help you

motivate your student to do better; and I will always been your mediator and try to help you find a better study

approach for your student. But, as I noted before, none of us go home with your student so we can’t make him or

her do homework or read or study. Only you can do that.

The good news? There are still two quarters, half a school year, left to fix any problems. It is not too late, right

now, to fall back on proven parental strategies and tough love and move ahead on that pathway to academic

success.

Yes, success is right there, waiting for your student, with your guidance, patience,

and love. Rest assured, your student may get upset as you make the changes, but

he or she will grow up and thank you later.

Attention Seniors: Beginning January 1st, you can complete the FAFSA form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This is the TOPS application and also the application for receiving any kind of federal or state aid that you may qualify for. Only students who complete this FAFSA and meet the TOPS requirements will receive the award. The final deadline to complete the FAFSA is July 1, 2016, however I encourage you to complete the form by the end of April. You will need to include your tax information even though TOPS has nothing to do with family income. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 337 235-5711 ext. 108. You can also refer to the Senior information booklet which is posted on our website www.tchs.net, under Academics, Guidance, Senior Section.

Juniors need to apply to take the ACT test in February if they have not already done so. There are only three tests left this year. I strongly encourage each Junior to take the ACT at least two times prior to their senior year. All Juniors will be taking the ACT at TCH around mid-March. This is a special State approved test.

If you are planning to attend UL Lafayette and have a minimum core gpa of a 3.0 and an ACT composite of 24, then you may receive a scholarship offer. You must have applied and been accepted prior to January 31st.

The Sophomores will be participating in Career Connections held at the Cajun Dome Convention Center. More information will be sent home in January.

Seniors remember to continually check the TCH website at www.tchs.net. I continually post scholarship opportunities. Select Academics, then Guidance, then Senior Section. Scholarships are posted under announcements.
