Twentieth Sunday - In Ordinary Time Jesus withdraws to the Gentile districts of Tyre and Sidon to get away from the adversaries who taunt him for break-ing the Jewish rituals of purification. Here we will rede-fine the limits of clean and unclean. Through the suppli-cation of a Canaanite woman, he will deal with the ques-tion of salvation for the Gentiles. Strangely enough, Jesus remains silent as if he shared the arrogant particularism of the Jews towards these “dogs of the Gentiles”. He seems to hesitate and when he decides to answer the woman, he does so in shocking terms. He wishes to do the will of God who desires that the lost sheep of Israel be gathered together. Only then, from the base of this renewed people, will he welcome the Gentiles, in accordance with their belief into the great family of Abraham. What is this woman’s problem? She does not believe that she has any right to demand the bread of divine friendship reserved primarily for the Jews. All she can ask for are crumbs. But she asks with such faith and hu-mility that she will receive the fullness of salvation for which she hopes. In the welcome Jesus gives this for-eigner, the Christians of the first century saw a prophetic model for their own attitude toward the Gentile believers. They had to go beyond the limits of an elitist religion, one based on race alone, in order to preach a universal salva-tion grounded in faith. Can we transcend the frontiers of our prejudices? Many whom we consider alien in fact teach us the meaning of faith.

THANK YOU DUKE CITY REDI-MIX. LLC

Our extreme gratitude to Duke City Redi-Mix LLC, located at 7705 Broadway SE for their donation of several tons of 1” gravel for our Church landscaping on the south side of our glorious Shrine of the Little Flower. Duke City do-nated and transported over four tons of beautiful gravel called San Pedro Gold to compliment the fine brick of our building. Our extreme gratitude to Duke City Redi-Mix! Dear Parishioners, as this company has supported us please keep Duke City Redi-Mix in mind for your own con-crete and gravel needs. The people we dealt with at Duke City are faithful and active Catholics. Please support those who have supported us. Please note that the rest of the landscaping on the south side of the Church was all donated and did not cost the parish much save for the bags of garden soil. Because the south side is the hotter side of the building in the winter and summer, the style of land-scaping was chosen to be a drier, cleaner and minimal maintenance choice. The gravel color and size was care-fully selected with numerous visits to different gravel busi-nesses. Daniel Talavera of Talavera Landscaping re-moved the large area of bermuda and crabgrass. Over the winter and spring, Sergio Castañeda and Tim Fresquez repeatedly sprayed the area in order to totally eradicate the bermuda and crab grass. Daniel put the weed barrier fabric down and spread the delivered gravel. Tim Fresquez removed some old bushes. Baca’s trees removed the three plum trees which growth was different as they were all different species of plums as well as the large ce-dar tree on the north side. The tree attracted birds and their excrement near the north entrance, and were messy with fine needles and buries. Also it was so large that it obscured the building.

I would rather see the beautiful building again than the beautiful tree (Fr. Vince). The metal and granite base Crucifix from France was donated along with payment for its powder coating. The three small rose bushes which are a type of low maintenance roses and in a paprika color which compliment the church coloring were also carefully selected and donated. The new splash plates underneath all the terra cotta colored down spouts were also donated by the same person who donated the French Crucifix, powder coating, roses and other costs. Sergio Castañeda and our seminarians Francesco and Javier installed the French Crucifix Monument. Our gratitude to all who donated the vision, labor or personal funds to this project. These new improvements to the south side of the church certainly compliments the north landscaping with its plants, yellow granite block benches, two Crucifix Monuments from France which have all been donated as well. The three other French cruci-fixes will also be taken out through the courtesy of Baca’s Trees and transported to be powder coated. Our gratitude to our parishioner Cathy Rubio for her gracious donation to this project. The exterior landscaping certainly compliment our most splendid and glorious Shrine of the Little Flower. The exterior looks clean, well , well cared for and welcoming, and compliments the beautiful interior which absolutely gleems in its immaculately kept condition, tasteful art and environment and original envisioned slendour.

From our Pope

Pope Francis has strongly criticized clericalism, careerism among clergy and bishops, Vatican “courtiers” and the institutionalized Church’s his-torical entanglement with worldliness in a new and lengthy interview with the left-leaning Italian pa-per, La Repubblica. In the 4,500-word transcript, published on Tues-day, 1 October in the Rome-based daily, the 76 year old Pope also speaks of his desire for a poor and missionary Church that is present as a tiny “leaven” in society and whose main aim is to build brotherhood and agape among all people, rather than proselytize to gain new members. And he ex-presses his intention to recover – with “humility and ambition” – the Second Vatican Council’s de-

cision to “be open to modern culture” and bolster “religious ecu-menism and dialogue with non-believers.” Some of the Pope’s newly published comments – especially his frank criticism of certain attitudes in the Church – are likely to cause even more consterna-tion among conservative Catholics who took exception to certain remarks from his 19 September interview with La Civiltà Catol-lica. “The [Vatican] court is the leprosy of the papacy,” Francis says. “Heads of the Church have often been narcissists, flattered and thrilled by their courtiers,” he adds. The Jesuit Pope says the Church that “Jesus and his disciples preached” was “missionary and poor”, which he says is still valid today. “Our goal is not to proselytize but to listen to needs, desires and disappointments, despair and hope. We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love.” “The Son of Man became flesh to instill in people’s souls the sentiment of brotherhood,” Pope Francis says. “Agape and the love of each one of us towards others, from those closest to those farthest away, is the only way Jesus gave to find the way of salvation and the Beatitudes,” he adds. In the interview the Pope expresses his spiritual affinity with Saint Francis; calls the Jesuits “perhaps the most effective leaven” in the Church; and says “youth unemployment and the loneliness of the elderly” are the “most serious evils’ in the world and “most urgent problem the Church is facing.”
