*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP* Pastor Michael Rothaar

The rhythm of life in congregations always changes as the school year ends, people focus on summer travel or summer homes, and the idea of spending all day Sunday outdoors is very inviting. So take this as your (probably annual) encouragement to include worship in spite of all else that beckons! As Dave Hanson (who was my pastor for a number of years at Holy Cross, Wheaton) used to say (repeatedly): “If you’re in town, you’re in church!”

Many of you know that the church’s color for the roughly six months of “Sundays after Pentecost” is green. It fits nicely with the seasons in this part of the world. Some churches even have different sets of green paraments and vestments, which are used progressively: the bright and vivid (new growth) greens of early summer yield to the richer hues accented with floral colors, leading to the darkening leaves of fall turning to the burnished oranges and reds and yellows of fall.

Our Christian journey is like that. God gives us growth and opportunities for service all through our lives, but the character of that service will differ. What we celebrate when we come together as the church at worship is the blessings that are part of each of our lives. Younger Christians are filled with promise and hope and new directions, as we just celebrated at our confirmation service in May. In their prime, Christians are able to make valued contributions of their financial resources, their energy and their expertise to help build the church. Even as our days on the earth draw closer to their end, and we experience weakening in some areas of our life, we find it possible to pray and contribute our experience and hope for the future, giving of what we have to build for future generations.

Thank you so much to those who have been willing to give interviews to some of your fellow CTL members about how you see this church’s life in the years to come. At our leadership retreat on June 4, the council and the visioning team will reflect seriously and prayerfully on the things you have said. They will then be planning a series of events that will bring members of the church together for deeper discussion.

From now until late November, our gospel readings come from Luke, whose stories emphasize that Jesus the healer hears the prayers of everyone, even those who are outside the circles

Page 8: From Pastor Keithstorage.cloversites.com/christthelordlutheranchurch... · Fri, Jun 3, 2016 Community Group - ITN 9:00 AM Sat, Jun 4, 2016 Leadership Retreat 9:00 AM Sun, Jun 5, 2016

that the world considers important. In Luke’s telling of Jesus’ story, it becomes clear that God is acting for the good of his whole creation. Come and join with us on Sundays to pray for the healing of the world, and the wisdom to discern God’s plan for our congregation’s future.

Pastor Michael Rothaar

ELCA COMBINING ROSTERS The Churchwide Assembly, meeting later this year, is

expected to follow the ELCA Church Council’s recommendation to eliminate separate rosters for Associates in Ministry (which includes musicians, educators, youth workers, and administrators), Deaconesses, and Diaconal Ministers largely devoted to ministries of service. The intention is for there to be just one official roster of laypersons who are set apart for service in the church, and for it to be known as Ministry of Word and Service. People on this roster will all be given the title of Deacon.

Other denominations have similar but not identical rosters. The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod has long had a tradition of Deaconesses, but much less like a religious order (nuns) than ELCA deaconesses traditionally have been. (Dss. Andrea, our director of ministries, is from the LCMS and not rostered in the ELCA, so she will not be affected by this change.) Roman Catholic deacons are able to carry out many of the functions of priests, but are not subject to all of the same restrictions in vocation. The ELCA is in the process of determining the precise requirements for this new roster, and the rite through which people will enter it. This is the step that was not taken in 1987 when the ELCA was formed but was unable to agree on the recommendations of the transition team’s Study of Ministry.

Remember to keep all the faithful workers for the church in your prayers, especially those who have made this service their vocational commitment.

Celebrating The Campaign for the ELCA’s second year

Last year was an exciting time of growth and new beginnings for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Our first comprehensive campaign, Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA, reached $80 million – or 40 percent – of our $198 million, five-year goal, allowing important work to begin and the expansion of existing ministries. In the 2015 Campaign Report, you will get a glimpse of what gifts, including yours, have made possible so far.

Visioning Task Force at CTL During the month of May the members of the task force

visited many members of CTL. Questions that went beyond the CAT online survey were asked. All the comments, concerns and hopes for the future of CTL were recorded and then compiled. The congregation council and the task force will meet with Nancy Sayer from the Samaritan Center on June 4th to discuss the results of the survey. They will make plans for the next steps. .Everyone in the congregation will have an opportunity to share in conversations that will affect our future.

We're aware that some think that it’s taking too long to get to the business of calling a new pastor. All of the work of the visioning task force, the congregation council, and the call committee is part of a process that cannot and should not be rushed. Pray that we all work together to listen and respond to God's plans for CTL and us, as members.

Do we need a new Facebook page? That is a question I have been asked several

times over the last few weeks. And the answer is yes. And we still have the old page. Let me try and explain the why’s for each! We now have a CTL GROUP and a

CTL PAGE. GROUP –

Groups provide a space for people to communicate about shared interests. Groups can be created by anyone.

Page 10: From Pastor Keithstorage.cloversites.com/christthelordlutheranchurch... · Fri, Jun 3, 2016 Community Group - ITN 9:00 AM Sat, Jun 4, 2016 Leadership Retreat 9:00 AM Sun, Jun 5, 2016

10

Other differences include: • Privacy: In addition to a public setting, more privacy

settings are available for groups. CTL Group is Public. In secret and closed groups, posts are only visible to group members.

• Audience: You can adjust group privacy to require members to be approved or added by admins. (Deaconess Andrea and Carri are Admins)

• Communication: In groups, members receive notifications by default when any member posts in the group. Group members can participate in chats, upload photos to shared albums, collaborate on group docs, and invite members who are friends to group events.

Groups are great for connecting family, peers, teammates, co-workers, or people with a shared interest. Members can ask and answer questions, post about events or job openings and follow conversations about topics that interest them. Additionally, groups allow you to send mass messages directly to the group members' inbox. PAGES

Pages allow real organizations, businesses, celebrities and brands to communicate broadly with people who like them. Pages may only be created and managed by official representatives.

• Privacy: Page information and posts are public and generally available to everyone on Facebook.

• Audience: Anyone can like a Page to connect with it and get News Feed updates. There is no limit to how many people can like a Page.

• Communication: People who help manage a Page can publish posts as the Page. Page posts can appear in the News Feeds of people who like the Page. Page owners can also create customized apps for their Page and check Page Insights to track the Page's growth and activity.

Page 11: From Pastor Keithstorage.cloversites.com/christthelordlutheranchurch... · Fri, Jun 3, 2016 Community Group - ITN 9:00 AM Sat, Jun 4, 2016 Leadership Retreat 9:00 AM Sun, Jun 5, 2016

• From Facebook help: Think of a Facebook Page as a Timeline for organizations, businesses, brands and public figures. Similar to profiles, Page owners can post stories, add a cover photo, host events and more. Those who have "liked" a Page will see the Page's updates in their News Feeds.

If you're looking to promote your company or raise brand awareness, you'll want to create a Facebook Page. You can share promotions, offer specials, make announcements, and essentially, build a central fan base. It's free to create, and once it is set up, the Page is optimized to look the same across computers, phones, tablets and other devices. Conveniently, there is a free Facebook Pages Manager app (Android, iOS) so owners can conveniently run the Page when they're on-the-go.

For example, just as I'm a fan of the official Page for the show "Lost," I am also a member of groups created by other fans like myself. The "Lost" groups offer a way to interact with a community of people and discuss the latest theories around what is happening on the show—from what the "smoke monster is" to how it will all end.

Social media has many uses….and it can be used for good

or bad. Facebook can be a great way to reach out to our community, to let them know all the good things we are doing at CTL. So “like” the new CTL PAGE and share all the pictures, event notices, check-in, review, and ask your friends and family to like our page! GROUP page, if you are not a member and would like to be e-mail today!

I hope this helps! So be part of both – the CTL GROUP

and PAGE! It is all about communicating with each other and the wider community. CTL does some amazing ministries and we have so many gifts to share with our neighbors! Help get the word out!

If you have questions, please feel free to ask Carri N., your

teenage neighbor, or me Serving Christ with you, Deaconess Andrea

used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.

Paper Products Drive Paper Products Sunday: The Elgin Food Pantry is in need

of paper products—Kleenex, paper napkins, paper towels, paper plates, toilet paper, and disposable diapers. These items are often not available to clients, but are much needed. All during the month of May we will be collecting paper products on the table in the library. Please be generous!

Kids Hope USA May 11th was the KH end of the year party. A good time

was had by all! Ask a mentor about the games we played. The cracker game will long be remembered. The Village Squire graciously provided all the pizza, which was enjoyed and appreciated by all. Now, the school year is over and the kids have scattered for the summer. We'll be starting back the second week of school. The principal wants the mentors there as soon as possible!

There's so much need in so many areas at Hillcrest. The principal has a new child already lined up for August. One child + one mentor + one hour a week = solid relationship and progress in many areas. Come be a mentor! Training is available! Make a difference in the life of an at risk child.

Talk to Jeanne T or Carri N to volunteer for this important, fulfilling and rewarding position. Pray for Kids Hope kids from all over the country. Prayer does make a difference!

Protecting Our Children Christ the Lord Lutheran Church has a child protection

policy for all children and youth, both for members of the church and for guests who are part of any program sponsored by the church. The policy deals with volunteer and staff screening and how various incidents that might occur will be handled for nursery age children through youth up to age 18. This document can be found in the entryway and is well worth reading by any parent or guardian. On Sun., Aug. 21, after church, there will be a meeting to review this document. All volunteers and staff who work with children and youth, including adult nursery assistants, are strongly encouraged to attend. Parents are invited, also. Jeanne T and her “friends” will be presenting. The Child Protection Committee meets once a year in the spring. If you are interested in being part

Good News Financial Report Financial Report and Stewardship Practices Gifts Given Gifts Expected April $15,223 $15,853 -$630 Year to date $62,907 $62,694 +$213 Expenses $56,412 +$6,474

Those who pledge give the bulk of the money to support our mission and ministry. Non-pledgers are currently about $10,000 behind in our best estimates of what we thought they would give. Again, thank you to all who set personal giving goals, which is of great benefit in this critical transition year for CTL. Thank you also to all who give so generously of their time and talents in our mission and ministry.

“I have learned to be content with whatever I have.” (Philippians 4:11-12). A recent article on de-cluttering by Jeannette Bessinger, a freelance writer, suggests what are good Christian stewardship practices. Let go of the need to be right and let go of perfectionism because they will never bring us peace. Stop blaming, shaming, and complaining! Stop trying to please everybody. Forgive someone because it frees us. If we’re wrong, make it right, apologize because owning up means it won’t own us. Let go of self-limiting beliefs - they limit what we think we can do.

Vineyard Breakfast CTL is providing breakfast for the needy at the Vineyard

Church in downtown Elgin on the third Thursday of each month. Breakfasts start at 7:00 a.m. We are providing a hot meal. Anyone who would like to help by donating food, cooking, or serving, please contact Barb B.

Prayerful Humor Fishing Wife

"So, what's the matter?" asked one woman of her friend over coffee. "I thought you just got back from a nice relaxing fishing trip with your husband." "Oh, everything went wrong," the second woman answered. "First, he said I talked so loud I would scare the fish. Then he said I was using the wrong bait; and then that I was reeling in too soon. All that might have been all right; but to make matters worse, I ended up catching the most fish!"

Scrip Fundraising

Simply return an order form with your check to the church on Sunday. You will receive a new order form each week. You may pick up your order the following Sunday at the church.

We encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful benefits offered by this on-going fundraiser. If you have questions, please talk to Mary N 847-828-0027 or Dorothy G 847-888-4484.

*THANK YOU* Holy Holes – Nelson Family, Barb B Altar Flowers – Russ & Carol H, Riebock Family, Barb L, the Delaney family, David & Melonie M.

An enormous shout of thanks goes out to Patty H. for planning and cooking a tasty chicken dinner with all the trimmings and to all the people who helped by preparing, serving, and greeting at the April Soup Kettle. Besides Patty, these are the people who helped that evening: Corrine A., Vicki S., John M., Jeanne T., Arlyn T., Lowell B., Marcy W., Linda W., Howard W., Bob L., and Barb B. Our next Soup Kettle is scheduled for July 29th.

A big thank you goes to everyone who baked, bought, or

donated at the bake sale, which was held to support the Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva. The bake sale raised $314.75. That, along with other donations from the CTLWalkers, gives us an all-time high of $1044.75. This amount has been given to the center as a donation from CTL to help support their work with those touched by cancer. Thanks, also, to Debbie McG for heading up this fundraiser and to Chris W for helping at the sale. For more information concerning Living Well, their support groups and resources, please talk with Barb L.
