Amicus is an International Exchange Student Program affiliated with Young Life. We are looking for Christian families
to host high school students for the 2015-16 school year. Hosting an International
Student is a great opportunity to share Christ’s love and have an impact on someone from another country. Families
need not have teenagers in the home in order to host. We have students that have been carefully selected for this program that need homes for the next school year. For more information, contact Lisa Myra at [email protected] or 320-267-9314.
LLiibbrraarryy NNootteess ffrroomm KKaatthhyy Walking with Tension by Jennifer (Jenny) Hill What kind of God hears the desperate cry of a little girl to be physically healed…and says no? Learning how to walk with cerebral palsy was hard, but learning how to walk alongside God was harder. In Walking with Tension, Jenny Hill shares her journey to seek healing from her disability. When healing doesn’t happen, she begins to wrestle with God over some big questions. “Is God really good?” “Where is He in the midst of our struggles?” and “How do we love God when we don’t understand Him?” Finding the answers to these questions leads Jenny down a long road filled with shame, disappointment, and pain. Through unlikely friendships, counseling, and a loving church family, Jenny discovers healing for her soul and learns what it means to bring hope to others along life’s path—simply by telling her story.

Legend of the Celtic Stone by Michael Phillips Following on the success of The Secrets of Heathersleigh Hall, Michael Phillips recreates a world of heather-covered moors and evocative highlands where one man's quest to uncover his connection to his celebrated ancestry evokes the glory that is Scotland. In Legend of the Celtic Stone, Westminster Abbey is the site of a burglary that sets all of Great Britain astir. Both the IRA and Scottish nationalists are thought to be the culprits but no one has the answer to the puzzling crime. Andrew Trentham, member of Parliament and one of the nation's most eligible men, is as chagrined by the break-in as anyone, and wary of the winds of nationalism sweeping down from the north. It is difficult for him to focus on national affairs however when his personal life is filled with all the trouble he can handle. Rebuffed in his proposal of marriage by the woman that he loves and suffering through the lingering pain of a family tragedy, this heir of noble blood is compelled to reexamine his foundations. What Andrew discovers in the process is a link to ancient Caledonia, a highland heritage that will forever change the way he looks at the world. As the ancient legends begin to shed light on Andrew's place in the world, he makes attempts to rekindle the love he has lost. At the same time, a resurgent Scotland rises to reclaim the glory of its storied past.
In Every Pew Sits a Broken Heart by Ruth Graham By turns memoir, Bible study and self-help book, Graham's platform as the daughter of beloved evangelist Billy Graham gives her the credentials to spin this competent tale of brokenness. But she offers more than a famous lineage: "I am qualified to write this book because I am flawed," she writes. She shares her struggles parenting three children through out-of-wedlock pregnancies, drug use and bulimia; her battle with depression and flirtation with suicide, and her disappointment over her two divorces. "I know what it's like to sit in the pew with a broken heart," says Graham. It's her vulnerability in the memoir portions that lend credence to the fairly basic application items at the end of the chapters. (Advice to those experiencing suffering: "seek godly counsel" and "maintain your daily devotional times with God.") Graham finds solace for the brokenhearted through scripture, looking at the lives of Jeremiah, Elijah and other biblical examples. Unlike many inspirational books of this ilk, there's no fairytale ending. Graham admits she is in the midst of a third faltering marriage, but says she's grateful God accepts her as she is—"hurting, wounded, broken." In true Graham fashion, the book concludes with an altar call. Weary Christians disappointed with the way their lives have turned out should find this a heartening read.
