DEVOTION: PSALM 130:1-8

Have you ever experienced "the depths?" In life's journeys, we often feel

desperately lost in places and circumstances we never imagined or which are not of

our own choosing. Alternatively, perhaps we make poor decisions or take sinful

actions that result in painful, broken relationships and a sense of desolation.

Oppressed by our burden of regrets, we may feel hopeless.

The psalmist, too, had fallen into this pit of despair. However, the psalmist

remembered that God seeks to reconcile. He cried out to God and awaited a

forgiven, redeemed relationship with God. The psalmist experienced hope. Then he

appealed to his co-travelers and reminded them of God's loving forgiveness and

redemptive reconciliation. He shared the message of hope.

Are you in despair's depths? God seeks to reconcile with you. God hears your cries.

God forgives you. Once freed from your depths, could you share the hope-filled

message of God's love with a despairing co-traveler?

Gracious God, we exalt you for the unmerited love and reconciliation you impart.

We implore you to answer our cries; forgive our failure to trust you and our

actions that cause our despair. Show us with whom we can share a message of

hope. Amen.

BUILDING FUNDS

Thanks to everyone for keeping our general offerings up to the budgeted level.

My message today concerns the building, which is of course a ministry of the church. Over

the past 6 months or so we have lost 2 tenants, and over $1,500/month in rents. Both these

spaces are atypical and so difficult to re-rent (although Alzheimer's did take part of one). In

August we have a property tax payment of about $5,000. I am asking for you to consider

an additional offering to help with this payment. If you can help, please mark your check

as a property tax donation. Thank you.

Love is learned early at the Trinity Lutheran Child Development Center.

Children learn many things from watching the adults around them. When

they begin their learning years at the Trinity Lutheran Church Child

Development Center, they learn to care.

Here, each day, your children will see eager examples of open hearts and

helping hands as our staff members live out their Christian commitment to

serve.

Our whole staff is always happy to get to know the children as individuals

and to encourage them to share their thoughts and interests. We know and

show that every little learner is a valued part of our schoolroom

community.

We also show the children how very much they matter to the larger

community. They visit the fire station and see people and equipment

standing ready to keep them safe. They visit the church‟s community

garden and see that they can help provide food for all. Inside the school

and all around town, the children see caring examples, and learn the value

of generous hearts and of service.

Our preschool offers classes for 3-4 year olds and 4-5 year olds. For more

information, call any of the following staff at 745-LOVE (5683).

LETTER FROM GOOD

SHEPERD LUTHERAN

Dear Trinity Lutheran Members,

Thank you for your assistance with Good

Shepherd's hosting the Alaska Synod Assembly

in April. Your donation and volunteer work to

provide a meal for the Assembly was very

much appreciated.

The entire event was successful and wonderful

experience for the participants. We could not

have done as well with your help.

PARADE FLOAT

TLC is planning a float, with a 'garden' theme,

for the Colony Day Parade scheduled for June

13th. If interested in riding on the float

(looking for a willing TEENAGER to be

included); providing a vegetable

(potatoes/carrots/onions/celery/cucumbers/toma

toes/peppers/lettuce/chard/etc.) for person to

hold while seated on a bale; lend garden tools to

lean against the bales; lend vegetable PLANTS

for around the edge of the float, please let

Shirley Platt know ASAP.

Parade participants are asked to wear the

CHURCH SHIRTS, black (or dark) bottoms,

and garden gloves, (garden hat and sunglasses,

if you like).

Please contact Shirley Platt by text,

email [email protected], or 541-661-

4257.

There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall

if you‟d like to be a part of the TLC parade

float on June 13.

TLC COMMUNITY GARDEN

Peas, carrots, squash, beets, potatoes, cabbage, kale, there are so many different

vegetables we can grow in our TLC community garden to share with others.

There are still raised beds and in the ground plots available for you or a

neighbor to plant with food. We are looking for someone to plant a row of

potatoes for Family Promise to distribute this fall to the families who come to

them for help. Please speak to Pastor Diane if you are interested in doing this.

This year we received a generous grant from Thrivent that allowed us to

purchase two rototillers to use in the garden. (See the pictures of Dana, Paul

and Wayne working to prepare the soil.) Will Walton, Dana, Paul and Wayne

also built 6 new raised beds this spring. Rory Gielarowski helped fill them with

soil. Our TLC community garden takes a community to prepare, plant, harvest

and distribute. It is fun to grow your own food. Come and be a part! It takes a

community of volunteers to grow a garden and to feed a community.

We have additional space to offer to neighbors, friends or a person who just

wants to grow their own food. Flyers advertising the garden have been posted

in the Palmer Food Pantry and Family Promise. (Please pick one up from the

church office if you have a place to post one.) Tell people about the garden.

Walk over and visit the garden if you have not already done so. Volunteer to

help water, weed and harvest the garden.

Many people benefited from the garden last year. For six Wednesdays we

harvested vegetables and brought them to the Palmer Food Bank for

distribution. The potatoes we grew and harvested last September on a “God‟s

Work, Our Hands” Sunday were distributed through the Eklutna tribal council.

We hope to expand our outreach this year. This is an ongoing ministry of

Trinity Lutheran Church. Come and be a part!

Peace,

Pastor Diane

Page 7: FROM REV. DIANE KRAUSZER - Trinity Lutheran Churchtrinitylutheranak.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/June...2015/06/06  · June 7, Pentecost 2 Gen 3:8-15 The First Sm. and its Punishment

ACCEPTING GOD’S RESOURCES

LUKE 14:25-35

Whether building a tower or building a life, it is important to first consider

the cost. One interpretation of this parable focuses on knowing how much

the tower will cost before starting to build. The necessary resources can be

determined. The cost for building a tower is concrete and measurable.

The cost of following Jesus is more than any building. For followers of

the living God, Jesus must take the primary place that supercedes other

family, friends, dreams and ambitions. The demands of carrying the cross

of Christ are dear. The cost of discipleship is great - "none of you can

become my disciple if you do not give up all your possession".

I recall working with a congregation on a building appeal. Some members

had a clear vision of what God was calling this congregation to do in

ministry. These members were willing to take a step in faith. Some members

would not support breaking ground until every cost detail was worked out

and the money for the whole project was in the bank. These members could

only see the limited financial resources available the membership.

This congregation did not ask members to give up all their possessions.

However, the leaders did ask each member to prayerfully consider a faith

commitment with some financial sacrifice. The leaders did ask members to

explore creative ways to make a new facility for ministry possible. This

invitation led one member to donate the heating and air conditioning

equipment valued at more than $250,000. By the end of the appeal, the

majority of members had made a contribution and God's work was alive in

new ways.

As faithful stewards this parable gives us hope in two ways. First, God will

provide. God has the resources to build both towers and lives. And, when

we are called to undertake a task for mission, it is God who will provide the

resources. An appropriate question may be, "Are we willing to receive what

God has to offer us?"

Second, it is freeing to know that everything belongs to God. We came into

this world with nothing and will leave with nothing. As a disciple and

steward, we are called to be faithful with what God has entrusted to us. It is

not about collecting our own resources so that we can have what is needed,

but accepting God what provides and using it for God's work.

Let us pray: 0, God, we've wasted, we've complained, we've grumbled.

We've misused our resources, we've confused our needs with our wants.

For these sins Father, forgive us. Help us reset our priorities according to

your will. Amen.

NEWSLETTER ARTICLE FROM LUTHERAN

SOCIAL SERVICES OF ALASKA

Summer is upon us. Children are out of school for summer break, and as

always we see an increased number of households coming through our food

pantry. This year we are also facing a decrease in government commodities

so this leaves us depending more on food donations and purchases to serve

all those who are in need. In the summer kid friendly foods are needed such

as cereal, peanut butter, jelly and canned fruit. Other items like boxed meals,

pasta ,spaghetti sauce/noodles, and canned protein meats like tuna, chicken or

spam are popular picks from our client choice shelves.

With the increased number of households served in the Food Pantry we are

also in need of volunteers. We are really needing help on Wednesday

evenings from 4:30 to 7pm. We can also use help on Tuesday, Wednesday

or Thursday 's from 1pm to 4pm.

The HUGSS (Help Us Give School Supplies) and Coats for Kids program

will be split into two separate events this year due to the renovation of the

Sullivan Arena. HUGSS distribution of backpacks and school supplies will

be on Tuesday, August 11th at East High School. Coats for Kids will be on

Saturday, September 26th at the Salvation Army Gym located on their C

Street campus. Volunteer opportunities for HUGSS will be available for set-

up on Monday, August 10th and on Tuesday, August 11th for distribution.

Also volunteers will be needed for distribution of coats on Saturday,

September 26th. Between now and distribution we need help with school

supplies and donation of new and gently used coats. We also have a need for

adult sized coats. You drop off any coats at the Fireweed Cleaners on

Fireweed and school supplies at LSSA office.

If any Thrivent Member would like us to help you apply for the $250.00 mini

grants that could be used for a food drive, shop for school supplies for

HUGSS or purchase a warm winter coats for children who need them. Please

give Sue Freie a call (272-0643) at the LSSA office and we would be happy

to help you write a grant. All Thrivent Members can write two grants per

year. Associate Members can write for one grant per year.

ORGANIC MEALS

One of our In-home Workers has been

hospitalized for a couple of weeks due to

complex health issues and is likely to be for at

least another few weeks, if not longer. She is a

young mom whose husband is in the military.

They are far from family to help. They have

three kids between the ages of 12 and 2. Her

husband is doing an incredible job of keeping up

with work, kids, and visiting his wife but he is

very stretched and they would much appreciate

some meals. The only dietary restrictions is *“as

organic and/or healthy as possible” due to health

concerns. Anyone who is willing/able to prepare

a meal can drop it off to me here at work/church

or put it in the church fridge or freezer and I will

coordinate with them for pick-up. Thank you in

THE KUWAA MISSION PRAYER LETTER

Resurrection Hope!

At this Easter season I am reminded that as God‟s people in Christ Jesus we are

a people of HOPE. And hope is what the Kuwaa Mission brings to the people

of the Kuwaa villages in Liberia. Through projects funded by your generosity

we are able to continue the vital work of building bridges, digging wells,

constructing medical clinics and sharing the Good News through Vacation

Bible School with the Kuwaa village children. Thank you for your continued

support of this important work. We are grateful for your generosity and

encouragement.

Ways you can support the Kuwaa Mission this Spring…

Kids4Kuwaa Noisy Offerings

Have you held a Noisy Offering in your congregation? At St. Mark Lutheran

Church in Anchorage, Alaska we collect a loose-coin offering on the every

5th Sunday (4 per year) for the Kuwaa Mission. Children collect these

offerings during our regular offering time in metal paint cans. The

congregation is encouraged to “make a lot of noise” as the cans are passed and

coins are contributed. Of course we accept “quiet” money too. In this way in

2014 we were able to raise over $1000 for the mission and we are confident

this year we will raise even more.

Noisy offering are also great for VBS and Sunday school. Kids love giving and

collecting the “noisy” coin offerings and are proud to contribute to the mission

that makes it possible for the Kuwaa children to have safe drinking water and

access to medical care.

Won‟t you try a Noisy Offering in your congregation?

Buy a Print

We are offering two beautiful prints for sale by well-known artist Marilyn Beth

Hughes, previously of Billings, MT. Ms. Hughes has paintings in many places

around Billings, including the Yellowstone Art Museum.

Prints are high quality (geclee). Neither are framed. They are all numbered

and sell for $75 each. Normal shipping is $9.99.

You may order prints by contacting board chair.

As we mentioned in last month‟s newsletter, a friend of the Kuwaa Mission

donated $6000 for bridge building/rebuilding work. We need to raise another

$6000 to complete the project. These bridges are of log and plank construction

and are vital for the transportation of well building materials and other supplies

up country. Of the 16 Kuwaa villages, only 3 have motor road access. The

others are accessible only by foot or motorbike which require bridges also.

Please consider helping us raise the $6000 needed to complete the bridge

project this year. Thank you for your generous support of the Kuwaa Mission

as together we share Christ‟s love with the Kuwaa through our water, medical

and school projects.

Gracious God, In this season of new life, hope and joy may we remember those

whose daily lives are difficult and challenging. For the people of Kuwaa, may

we continue to find ways to lift their burdens and restore hope and joy to their

lives through our gifts of time, talent and labor.

In the name of our Risen Savior, Christ the Lord. AMEN.

Do you know why sin is such a bad thing? God is holy. That means He is perfect and good. Because He is holy, He cannot let us do wrong without punishing us. If we sin against Him we deserve to be punished. Hundreds of years after Adam and Eve lived, there were many people on earth, and they were always doing sinful things. God was sad because of their sin, and was sorry He had made them. They were making God’s beautiful earth a terrible place. Then God said, “I will destroy man from the earth. I will put an end to their wickedness.” Draw an example of right from wrong. Then, write a prayer about the world and all of God’s people.
