Confessions by Request Before and After Mass

Today the Gospel passage we hear proclaimed con-tains an example of what New Testament Scholars, Catholic and others, call the “Petrine Ministry”. A special role played by the Apostle Peter both during the ministry of Jesus and in the first century Church. Decades ago, the U.S. Catholic-Lutheran Dialogues acknowledged both this Petrine Ministry and that one could legitimately argue from the NT text that it was meant by Jesus to continue down the ages. The disagreement, of course, lies in the historical devel-opment of an absolute monarchy around this Petrine Ministry. Many of the trappings have changed. Re-member:

The peacock fans still used for Pius XII?

John XXIII refusing to be a “prisoner in the Vati-can,” as Pope Pius IX described himself, and visit-ing prisons and hospitals in Rome?

The tiara last worn by Paul VI at his installation as Bishop of Rome?

The sede gestitoria, the chair carried on the shoul-ders of four men as the pope moved through the crowds, that was put into the museum by John Paul II?

The majestic plural, “we”, that began to fade with John Paul II, Benedict XVI used it sparingly, and it is pretty much gone now when Francis speaks? We Catholics see the person of the pope as the visi-ble sign and concrete expression of our unity with Christ, the head of the Church, and with one anoth-er, each in our personal vocational role within the Church. Peter’s profession of faith and Jesus’ com-mission transform the location established by Herod as a pagan shrine and his capital—Caesarea Philip-pi. The choice “Who do you say I am?” is a choice between what Herod offers and what the Kingdom of God offers. We are invited to answer the same question ourselves. Better late than never… I want to thank the special events committee for the lovely reception for our 30th anniversary as a parish and the blessing of Our Lady’s Chapel on August 15th. This event replaced the Luau. The International Food Tasting is coming soon. We need volunteers to take over the reigns as the current committee’s term expires in December. Contact Patty Scarpine or any member of the com-mittee for more information.

Bullying and back to school

Unfortunately, conflict and even bullying seem to be a widespread experience our country’s schools. Children may fall victim to, or perpetuate, intimida-tion and teasing, sometimes with lasting conse-quences to themselves and/or others. As children head back to school, it is important to talk to them about how they treat others and how to handle con-flict or bullying in their classrooms and on the play-grounds. Get involved in your child’s school and ask about plans or programs for bullying prevention.
