RAMAKRISHNA MISSION RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE(Autonomous)

The universal message of Swami Vivekananda is taking wide spread everyday not withstanding any kind of resistance from the world of fanatics. In this age of Information Technology it is the faculty of reasoning which man currently relies upon and the truth of Vedanta is in concordance with perfect reasoning only. Therefore, the universal message of Vedanta that was preached by Swami Vivekananda is certainly the way of the future. In other words, one may become a good student through the study of Vedanta, a doctor may become a good doctor, and an engineer may become a better engineer through the study of Vedanta which teaches the world to go beyond fear or to become fearless, Abhih. This is what our target through Higher Education, not of course casting aside the need of earning livelihood and having a comfortable social living enriched with high ethical values through the development of modern science. Swamiji opined that a harmonious synthesis of Indian spirituality & Western science is needed for our sustenance of the future world. This is indeed our students should understand and the monastic and non monastic staff members of our Residential College are engaged in translating this idea into reality as far as practicable.

Let everybody join hands for this noble cause.

RAMAKRISHNA MISSION RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE(Autonomous)

Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, is a source of deep pride to all of us associated with it in different capacities. Over the years, the institution has permeated inseparably with our existence. It is our dream, our passion. Established with an aim to give shape to Swami Vivekananda's ideas of education, this college is one of the leading educational institutions run by the Ramakrishna Mission. By the grace of Lord Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, and Swamiji, the college is growing from strength to strength - quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Apart from fostering academic excellence, our aim here is to ensure a holistic growth in every student - to help him become a complete man: a man who can direct his excellence towards the upliftment of the society at large. Only such a man as he is an ideal human resource of our nation and an active soldier in Swamiji's brigade. I heartily welcome all those who share and support this aim of us, and are keen on assimilating it in their daily life, to our College. I also humbly appeal to all good souls in the society to be part of this project and support its cause.

Yours in the Lord,

(Swami Bhudevananda) Principal (Actg.)

The history of Ramakrishna Mission Residential College is identical to that of its parent organization, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur. In 1943, in the wake of the disastrous Bengal Famine, a handful of spirited and dedicated monks of the Ramakrishna Order set up a Students' Home at Pathuriaghata in North Kolkata.

The Home was housed on a small plot of land earmarked for the education of young college and university students. It slowly but steadily accumulated a reputation for nurturing meritorious but indigent students. In 1957, the Home was relocated on a larger compound at Narendrapur. Within a short span of time it acquired an enviable stature under the dynamic leadership and persistent efforts of the late Revered Swami Lokeswaranandaji, the Founder-secretary, and his distinguished team of teachers. The acorn has not grown into a massive oak. The campus of the Ashrama is spread over 150 acres of land, dotted with flower gardens, orchards, mango groves and water bodies. Far from the squalor and clutter of the city, the Ashrama boasts quite a few centres of excellence, Ramakrishna Mission Residential College being amongst them.

The college was established on the Ashrama campus in July 1960. Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, its first batch of students commenced classes on August 1960. Much later in 1976, the Higher Secondary Unit of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education started functioning on the college premises, but was shifted to the Vidyalaya after 2006. Autonomous status was conferred upon the college in 2008. Fully residential, this boys' college follows the same principles and objectives as all other institutions functioning under the aegis of the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Vivekananda believed education to the panacea for all the evil running rampant in our

HISTORY

country. He envisioned an educational system which would build character as well as ensure social uplift. For such a system of education to become real and practical, an ambience of trust and love needed to be created. Through a happy combination of learning and practising, students could engage in a joyous participation in the learning process. A modern implementation of the ancient Gurugrihavasa was Swamiji's solution. Teachers and students sharing the same living space, governed by moral and cultural mores of Indian life, in sylvan surroundings was the model chosen by the wise sages of the Ramakrishna Order. Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur was destined to become Swamiji's realization of education being ‘the manifestation of the perfection already in man’.

The Residential College endeavours to educate young men in its charge according to the best traditions of the country while instructing them in modern arts and sciences. In other words it also attends to their overall growth and development so that they may become strong and healthy individuals with sound moral principles, learn to respect higher values of life and become conscious of their obligations to the poor masses around them. It does all this and much else besides, not only by instruction but also by involving the inmates in a series of well-planned activities. This creates an elevating experience for the students.

In order to achieve excellence in our higher education system, UGC has, in the recent past chosen a number of colleges throughout the country and conferred the autonomous status on them. The bottomline of such autonomy is the freedom given to those institutions in the academic field empowering them to determine and prescribe their own courses of study & syllabi, restructure and design courses to meet local needs, evolve their own examination system and work in a suitable manner to achieve standards of teaching & research.

Our institution is one of those very few autonomous colleges in West Bengal. It has already successfully completed its first tenure of autonomy (October, 2008- January, 2014) accorded to it by the University of Calcutta under aegis of University Grants Commission (UGC). Accordingly the college enjoys 175% Tax Exemption on Donation to Research & Development.

At present the college has about 700 students on its rolls including both under graduate and post graduate courses. At the UG level, Eight Honours subjects are offered, and three courses are offered at the PG level. The completely residential status of the college has admittedly somewhat restricted the introduction of new courses, the seats in the three college hostels being limited. But our primary objective is to impart quality education rather than lay stress on quantity. We are, however, keen on outgrowing old thoughts and ways and determined to think on new lines as to the future work under our care. The recent introduction of Computer Science as an honours subject is a step in that direction, and we hope to introduce a few more courses in the coming session in keeping with the demands of present times.

The fruits of our tireless endeavour and relentless striving after excellence are evident in our college results in the University Examinations and different All India Entrance and/or NET exams.

Our chief mission has always been, and still is, to spread the light of education amongst the masses. That had been the aim of our founding fathers. Around 25% of our students are first generation learners with a monthly family income of less than `1500/-. They enjoy concessions in hostel fees. A large percentage of our students come from rural areas including the Sunderbans. Our students gratefully acknowledge their indebtedness to the college as they achieve, in course of a decade, economic stability, social mobility and respectability. It is really a matter of great satisfaction for us. Besides, the camaraderie and bonhomie among students from different social, economic and religious backgrounds give them a unique kind of education at Narendrapur. We have set in motion a silent revolution producing a visible spread-effect on society at large. The pride that our alumni take in their Alma Mater has led to the growth of a strong and vibrant Alumni Association all over the globe. Many of them sacrifice their valuable time, energy and money for the betterment of their institution. Many well-wishers also join us in helping our students by instituting scholarships.

DST (Department of Science & Technology). Govt. of India, New Delhi has recognised our college as a SIRO (Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). The college is very much proud for that achievement.

UGC-CSIR-DST- granted research units in Physics & Chemistry are now completely operational. Scholars are pursuing their research work under the guideline of our qualified teachers.

To make our students not only aware of but also respectful to our heritage and tradition, courses on Indian Culture and Value Education have been made part and parcel of the academic curriculum. In the weekly classes that are held on this subject, special emphasis is laid on the diverse nature of our culture which is a rich mosaic of many races, creeds and religions. At the end of each academic session, the students take exams on the courses taught. Special prizes are awarded to the students on the basis of their performance. They undertake practical lessons of Yoga, Pranayam, Dhyana, Bhajana etc. in the Prayer Halls of the hostels.

The hallmark of the campus life is numerous activities, academic and non-academic, t h a t are organised both at the college and the hostels throughout the year. Such activities add spice to the otherwise routine-bound life of students at the college and at the hostels, and also go a long way towards the overall development of a student's personality by giving him an opportunity for

self- expression which the classroom cannot always provide. Eminent teachers and personalities are invited to deliver lecturers at seminars and symposia. Artistes are invited to perform at various cultural functions. Students themselves are encouraged to participate in departmental seminar lectures, debates, quiz

competitions, music and poetry-reading sessions, drawing, and dramatic performances. Competitions are held annually. A three-

day exhibition is organised biennially where students work on various projects. Besides, birth anniversaries of saints of different religions and national leaders, national days and other auspicious days are celebrated with due solemnity and enthusiasm. Cultural functions are also organised.

One of the most active bodies on the campus is the Prakritipremi Parisat (Nature Lovers' Council). The sylvan setting of our campus is a treat for nature lovers. It is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, birds and insects, trees and plants of myriad hues and species and even to migratory birds. The students develop a predilection for bird-watching and nature-watching. Among the other committees are Seva Parisat (Council of Social Service), Vitarka 0 Alochana Parisat (Council of Debate and Symposia), Sanskritik Anusthan Parisat (Council of Cultural Functions), Krira 0 Vyayam Parisat (Council of Games and Sports).

The Secretary of the Cultural Council also functions as the Secretary General of the Students' Body. The Secretaries and Dy. Secretaries of other Councils become its members. Student members of these bodies are nominated by the Principal from among the First Year boys. The Second Year students elect their representatives through ballots for the next 2 years.

The college publishes a biennial magazine called ABHIH. Students & teachers can find for themselves a suitable medium of self-expression in the pages of this magazine which reflects the evidences of their productive thinking in different fields. Many a time it is been enriched by the contribution of the eminent Monks of Ramakrishna Order also. Each Department of the college and the three Bhavanas (Hostels) also publish & duly update their own hand-written wall-magazines throughout the year.

The college also has a very active N.C.C. and N.S.S. wings. Every year cadets pass the N.C.C.

'8' and 'C' certificate examinations. Some of them attend camps at various places in West Bengal and outside as part of the N.C.C. programme. The N.S.S. unit holds social service camps in r ural areas where students and teachers work in collaboration with local youths. Usually the programme includes road construction, road repairs, cleaning tanks, adult literacy work, sale off T.B. seals, helping the blind boys in their studies,

Students of poor families are given concessions in respect of the consolidated monthly fees. They must apply for such concessions at the time of admission only. Scholarships are given on the basis of their performance in examinations. Prof. Nirendranath Biswas of Alaska, USA has contributed Rs. One crore for maintaining 50 students. There are other generous persons contributing towards scholarship funds.

Since this is a residential college with autonomy, students are to attend at least 80% of the lectures delivered per semester / per year.

Besides the Governing Body there are several Councils, Cells and Boards like

1. Academic Council

2. IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell)

3. Board of Studies for each Department, both General and Honours courses

4. Placement Cell

5. Exam. Committee

6. Finance Committee

7. Hostel Committee

8. PF Committee for Hostel Staff

9. Disciplinary Committee

10. Grievance Redressal Committee etc.

There are two major vacations for students - the Summer Vacation and the Puja Vacation. The students are to go home during these vacations. On other occasions, a letter addressed to the Principal, by the guardian, explaining the reasons for leave of absence from the hostel is mandatory. Such leaves are, however, discouraged as they interfere with the normal routine of studies and the continuity of disciplined life. Students are required to return in time after all vacations and leaves. If they fail to do so, they will be liable to disciplinary measures.

Frequent visits by guardians are discouraged. They are allowed to visit their wards on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in the afternoon till the 1st bell of the evening prayer rings. Guardians are to meet their wards in the visitors' room or in the common room of the Bhavana concerned. They are

conducting classes for poor local youths, quiz sessions and cultural programmes. For the past few years, we have chosen a nearby village Arapanch for all these social welfare activities. Since the college is completely residential; hostels form an integral part of it. At present, the college has three hostels: Brahmananda Bhavana, Shri Gauranga Bhavana, Ramakrishnananda Bhavana. Construction of another hostel, Adbhutananda Bhavana, exclusively for PG students, is in progress. Each hostel has its own dining-hall, shrine, study hall and especially common room where the students have access to various indoor games, daily newspapers and magazines, and selected programmes on the television. Moreover, the hostels are equipped with basic facilities to meet the requirements of the students - the washer man, the cobbler, the barber, tailoring shop, and even a multi-gym.

A healthy combination of rigorous discipline and individual freedom forms the basis of the hostel life. To relieve monotony, utmost care is taken to ensure an all-round development of each student. Also, the hostel life here gives an individual student an opportunity to share his joys and hardships with others, and initiates him into a healthy community life.

Each hostel is managed by a superintendent, a warden and some supervisors. Their duty is to look after the students individually and try to make up for the absence of their parents, as far as practicable.

We insist that the students to abide by the follow ing sets of discipline:

1) They may go out, when necessary, with permission from the hostel authorities and return before the evening prayer.

2) They must attend the prayers both at morning and in the evening.

3 Use of PC or Laptop is strictly forbidden and the use of electronic devices viz. camera, ipod,

It is expected that once a student is admitted to this college, he would continue until he completes his course without break. If there is a break in his studies in 1st Year, a degree student will generally have to leave the college after he completes the year and takes examination. It is not possible to keep a degree student in the hostel for more than three years.

If the college authority finds it necessary to request a guardian to withdraw his ward from the college for any reason (which may or may not be disclosed) at any time of the year, the guardian will have to comply. Caution money is refunded within six month of withdrawal.
