1 Newsletter No. 3 - Term 1 Week 3 15 February 2018 From the Principal…………. The year is progressing very well with all students settled into their new rooms and making friends. I do hope families can attend the school this afternoon to view your children’s work and enjoy looking around the school rooms. STAFF CAR PARK Kalinda Primary School has a car park for our members of staff. The car park is designed so that every staff member has a designated car park, with a parking permit. Unfortunately, we do not have enough room for members of the school community and we are finding that the staff car parks are being filled by members of the community who want to get close to the school building to pick up or drop off students. We do have disabled car parks which are clearly marked and these are for the specific use for our families with children with a disability. PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE INTO OUR CAR PARK AND TRY TO PARK WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE SCHOOL. We do not have enough car parks for every member of the community so we have to restrict car parking to our staff. I have witnessed in the last couple of weeks, some members of the community driving into the car park to pick up children after school. This is a really dangerous practice as children and parents are walking through the car park and along the area in front of the school. Unfortunately, some members of our community have not been accommodating with this request in the past. Our top priority is to keep our students and community safe. Leading on from this, I also want to advise all members of the community that cars in the car park are not covered by Department of Education insurance. Although our trees are checked regularly throughout the year, small branches may come down and damage a car. BADGE PRESENTATIONS Badge presentations will be held at Monday morning assembly for our Student Leadership Team, our House Captains and House Vice Captains. GETTING TO KNOW YOU INTERVIEWS These interviews are being conducted next week and they are really important so that we can get to know your child well. Please make a time with your child’s teacher through the Compass “Book Parent Teacher Interviews” link. Bookings will close at 4pm tomorrow. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

School Council Elections 2018 Information for Parents

What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the school council? For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership: A mandated elected Parent category – more than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school. A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members. An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members. Generally, the term of office for all members is about two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections. Why is Parent membership so important? Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider standing for election as a member of the school council encouraging another person to stand for election. Do I need special experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election? The principal will issue a notice of election and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category. DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council at that school. Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination. Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed. Remember

Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do

Consider standing for election to council this year

PLANNED ASBESTOS REMOVAL WORKS The Department of Education and Training (DET) will soon be undertaking some proactive asbestos removal works at the school in the Office and Art Room. The asbestos-containing material is being removed from the school grounds in strict accordance with the Victorian

Occupational Health and Safety framework and environmental regulations. We will be working closely with the

Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), the responsible body for asbestos removal and remediation works

within DET, to ensure disruption to students and staff is minimal.

Work will be undertaken by a licensed asbestos removalist engaged by DET. As a further precaution, an

occupational hygienist will monitor air quality during applicable removal works and must issue a clearance

certificate before any person can access the area.

When the date and time of this work is known, a letter will be sent home to parents and guardians.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this process. Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you

have any further questions, on 9876 3289.

STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN (SAKG) Our wonderful SAKG (Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden) program for our Grade 3/4 students is well underway as we start 2018. Our crops that we planted before the end of last year have produced an abundance of lovely veggies such as; tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, zucchinis, carrots and cucumber just to name a few. The students have been harvesting the veggies for us to use in the kitchen for cooking. In the kitchen the Grade 3s have been learning the layout of our kitchen, how to use knives properly, and our wonderful shared table manners. This term we will be making our lovely homemade dips, Kalinda’s famous Pasta Sauce with fresh handmade pasta, and definitely something with our fridge full of zucchinis! Thank you to all the volunteers who have popped their names down to help in the kitchen this term, it’s greatly appreciated. All the recipes for the year you will find on the Grade 3/4 Homepage, I am sure the students will want to cook their lovely SAKG Menu at home for the rest of the family.
