1 Newsletter No. 17 - Term 2 Week 8 Thursday, 8 June 2017 From the Acting Principal……… Fabulous Football Fun on Wednesday In true Melbourne style, winter always brings with it very enthusiastic Kalinda AFL footballers. This year, in the spirit of encouraging our students’ passion for and safe play of the game, Mr Harvey has organised an umpire from ‘School Sports Officials’, so that each Wednesday at lunchtime students in Grades 1-4 can play in an ‘officially umpired’ (albeit non-tackling) match of AFL footy. This week after teams were sorted, Lucy, our official umpire oversaw two 23 minute games, involving 60-70 students, in what I have been told was “some pretty fantastic footy.” A very big thanks to Mr Harvey for organising our Wednesday football fun. Pyjama Day Tomorrow In support of our World Vision Sponsor Child, Timotius Koba who lives in Indonesia, our Junior School Council have invited all students and teachers to donate a gold coin to World Vision and come dressed in their favourite winter pyjamas for Pyjama Day this Friday. What a lovely way to start a lazy long weekend! First Aid in Schools St John Ambulance will visit our school tomorrow to deliver free First Aid in Schools training to our students. Through the First Aid in Schools program, trained St John presenters lead students from Foundation to Grade 6, through tailored sessions on the importance of First Aid and what to do in the event of an emergency. Our junior students learn about how to identify when there is an emergency, keeping themselves safe, and how to call for an ambulance. Senior students learn about delivering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the things they can do to assist in an emergency. Participating students will be given a special piece of homework for parents to complete. We encourage you to “do your homework” and go online ( www.stjohnvic.com.au/quiz) to see how much you know about First Aid. Are you First Aid READY? More information about the St John First Aid in Schools program can be found at: www.stjohnvic.com.au/schools CURRICULUM DAY We do hope all our families enjoy a relaxing break this long weekend and please remember that it is a four-day break, as there is a Curriculum Day scheduled for this Tuesday 13 th June. On Tuesday all staff will be involved in reviewing and revising our current curriculum planners, ensuring that all areas of the new Victorian Curriculum are thoroughly and innovatively covered in the units of work we plan and deliver to our students at Kalinda Primary School. Have a lovely long weekend! Erin Norman Acting Principal

BREAKFAST CLUB Please remember that all students are welcome to come down to the stadium for our wonderful Breakfast Club which runs from 8:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If anyone would like to make a donation of appropriate food for Breakfast Club, it would be greatly appreciated. Looking for ideas? Weetbix, honey, or jam are always a favourite. With our mornings getting colder the children love having a nice cup of warm milo or porridge. If you would like to donate a tin of milo from your next shopping trip our students would be very happy. Any donations can be left at the office. Thank you for your support. Karen Klewer & Kylie Drummond Breakfast Club Coordinators

FOUNDATION WRITING WORKSHOPS

We have been busy, busy, busy during our Writers’ Workshops in Foundation.

We are learning to find Phoneme Boxes on the consonant and vowel sides of our THRASS charts. We use these to make clever spelling choices in our writing. Big Body movements have helped us with letter formation and we are practicing writing on dotted thirds. Yep, we certainly are busy!! The Foundation Team.
