The main focus for our Community Club is environment care and social connections for students. We are rechecking in at present on pledges made when promoting Clean Up Australia Day way back in March. Different members of our group have been working with staff at school to organise; to collect batteries to ensure they don’t go into landfill (thank you Mrs Grant), recycle plastic bottle and milk lids (thank you Mrs Moon) and we are going to be restarting recycling poppers (Thank you Mrs Christie). The poppers presented us with a dilemma to explore. We, as a Community Club for environment care, would discourage the bringing to school of poppers as they are very high on the “waste” scales. They are individually packaged, have plastic covering around plastic straws. The popper “waste” created in our school is enormous, as those little plastic pieces can be found all throughout our school. But, we have acknowledged that if they come in then we need to do the best for the environment and have them recycled to minimise their impact. At the same time, we will continue to promote the reduction in individual packaged goods in lunch boxes and encourage the use of reusable containers, rather than single use plastic packaging. We are hoping that many members of our Caningeraba Community also made pledges, maybe as individuals or as a family? Did you write them down? How are they going? Here are some of the suggestions we had for you: Take 3 for the sea? Every time you go to the beach, you take away 3 pieces of rubbish. Only reusable cups for coffee? Most take away places allow you to bring your cup again – remember to pack it and get back into a good habit. Nude Food for School 3 days a week? Aim to reduce the packaging in lunchboxes going to work and school. Use reusable containers, resist the “treats” in all the packaging and make a big difference. Adopt a place in your neighbourhood to keep clean? Keep a street, park or area in your neighbourhood rubbish free. Make it your goal to pick up and dispose of any rubbish in that area on weekly or monthly basis. Active Citizens

In Year 5 and Year 6 we have our Community Club and wemeet to organise opportunities for students to become activeparticipants in our community. The main focus for ourCommunity Club is environment care and social connectionsfor students.

We are rechecking in at present on pledges made whenpromoting Clean Up Australia Day way back in March. Differentmembers of our group have been working with staff at schoolto organise; to collect batteries to ensure they don’t go intolandfill (thank you Mrs Grant), recycle plastic bottle and milklids (thank you Mrs Moon) and we are going to be restartingrecycling poppers (Thank you Mrs Christie).

The poppers presented us with a dilemma to explore. We, asa Community Club for environment care, would discourage thebringing to school of poppers as they are very high on the“waste” scales. They are individually packaged, have plasticcovering around plastic straws. The popper “waste” created inour school is enormous, as those little plastic pieces can befound all throughout our school. We are hoping that many members of our CaningerabaCommunity also made pledges, maybe as individuals or as a

Taking some Time - Mindfulness

We learn about mindfulness in our social emotional learningthrough our MindUp curriculum. It is often a term used bypeople in our everyday language, sometimes without a trueunderstanding or appreciation for what being mindful in thatmoment might mean. I have included here some explorations

on the term “mindful” and how being “mindful” can impact ourfamily life.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a whole body-mind state of awareness thatinvolves ‘tuning in’ to the present moment, with openness andcuriosity, instead of ‘tuning out’ from experience. Mindfulness isa state of being fully awake to life; being aware and undistractedin the present moment. It is about focusing attention on thepresent, rather than thinking about the past or worrying aboutthe future, which is often our brain’s default mode.

Mindful awareness is something that we all possess and thatcan be strengthened through practice. Mindfulness can bedeveloped through formal sitting meditation practices, orthrough informal everyday mindfulness activities that use thesenses to anchor the attention: such as mindful walking, listening to music, eating or conversation. Mindfulness is aclinically proven tool to support wellbeing and mental health byreducing stress and allowing life to be experienced more fully.

Mindfulness and Children

The way we interact with our children has a huge impact onthe way they think about themselves and their levels of personalresilience. Ellen Langer and team, a world-renownedmindfulness researcher found that children not only prefer tointeract with mindful adults, but actually devalue themselvesfollowing interactions with mindless adults (Langer, Cohen &Djikic, 2010).

The benefits of mindfulness with children

Mindfulness for Parents

The best thing parents can do to help their children becomemore mindful is to commit to some regular mindfulnesspractices themselves. The more present and mindful you arewith your children, the more mindful and resilient they will be.Mindfulness training can assist parents to remain in the present

moment and engage more fully when interacting with theirchildren.

Dedicate a window of time each week to mindfully play withyour child or children. Turn off all other distractions such as TV,and put your mobile away and on silent. Try to give them yourfull attention during this time and if your mind wanders off toall the things you should be doing, that’s fine – that’s just whatminds do! Use your child as an anchor to come back to everytime your mind wanders away.

• Research shows that mindfulness training increasesconnectivity in the pre frontal cortex of the brain, which is linked to improved attention, memoryprocessing and decision making abilities.

• Mindfulness training involves tuning in to internal andexternal experiences with curiosity resulting inincreased self-awareness, social awareness, andself-confidence.

• Mindfulness training increases children’s ability toself-regulate their emotions, especially difficultemotions such as fear and anger, through breathingand other grounding techniques.

• Mindfulness has been shown to improve empathy orthe ability to understand what another person isthinking or feeling, which improves children’sawareness of others and helps them to build positiverelationships.

• Mindfulness builds resilience by giving children skillsto help them to cope better with stress, as well asengage more fully with themselves and the world.
