We have produced shipping traffic density maps

Page 3: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

What is a

density map?

Page 4: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

We have used an INSPIRE compliant 1km grid

Page 5: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

It’s so detailed that we need to zoom in to see that it’s really a grid.

To explain how we made a density map we need to zoom in even more.

Imagine these are ships crossing those grid cells at a given time.

We count the number of ships crossing each of those cells

Then we add a color gradation. The result is a shipping traffic density map.

It looks simple, but it’s aVERY time-consuming process.

How big is one year of AIS data?

Page 12: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

2013 contains

1,3 BILLION rows

Page 13: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

If we printed them we would need

30 MILLIONA4 pages

Page 14: From the Baltic Sea to South Africa - Shipping traffic density maps to Baltic Scope

If we put them one after anotherit’d reach South Africa
