From the Chair of the Scholarship Committee… Congratulations to the 2016 graduating seniors in our Phelps County high schools and surrounding communities. We also commend the college students currently working to pursue their degrees at many different colleges, universities, and technical schools. We are fortunate to have many talented and hard-working students and we are proud of them. Since the inception of the PCCF in 1976, the Foundation has awarded nearly $2.4 million in scholarships to area students. Currently there are 65 funds to which students can apply, with 5 new funds and one additional pass through award being created during the past year. In 2016 we were able to award 92 scholarships totaling $144,050. We had 109 applicants with 58 students receiving scholarships. Thirty nine were high school seniors, 19 were college students, 33 were female and 25 were male. Of all students, 31 are seeking 4-year degrees, 15 are seeking 2 year degrees, seeking masters degrees, and 3 are others are unsure. In 2015 we granted $237,365 in scholarship awards. The difference relates to market conditions as most of our scholarships are endowed and only earnings can be awarded. We are grateful to the generous donors to the PCCF who provide funding for these scholarships. Scholarship funding is a great way of charitable giving and provides the benefit of giving a young student a good start in establishing a career! We welcome inquiries into our scholarship program as we have many options for giving. Phelps County Community Foundation COLLEGE Scholarship Recipients 2016

Braden Badertecher: Braden, who passed away in 2013, was an active member of the Holdrege Chapter of Future Farmers of America. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who has been an active member of FFA while in high school. Involvement in school and community activities will be a consideration with preference being given to students enrolled in an agriculture-related field of study.

Delia Brugh: Appreciating the value of education, Delia utilized an estate gift to established a scholarship for the benefit of graduating seniors of the Alma, Nebraska High School. Students must have a 90% GPA or better and exhibit involvement in community, church and school-related activities.

Leland Gaffney: The family of Leland Gaffney created a ‘pass-through’ scholarship in his memory which will award scholarships to students who are graduating seniors or have previously graduated from any high school in Phelps County. To qualify for these awards students must be enrolled in a program of study in the construction field.

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE PCCF

Adam Harrahill: Honoring Adam’s love for carpentry, qualified students will be a graduate or graduating senior of a Phelps or Harlan County, Nebraska high school and plan to attend a technical or trade school. Students enrolled in building construction technology or carpentry trades will receive priority consideration for this scholarship.

Willis and Alice Holscher: The Holscher’s farmed near Bertrand and enjoyed their retirement in Kearney. Still caring about their roots, the Holscher’s created this scholarship opportunity for college students who previously graduated from Bertrand High School. An essay and financial need will be prime requisites for this award.

Harold and Dorthy Marshall: To qualify for this scholarship award students must have graduated from a high school in Phelps, Dawson or Buffalo Counties in Nebraska. Qualified applicants will be enrolled as a junior or senior at any University or college majoring in math or a natural science program of study .

A number of donors added to the scholarship offerings at the Phelps County Community Foundation this past year.
