Dear Readers,

It’s a privilege to publish 3rd volume of e-news letter of our department. With your cordial support and co-operation, department has successfully completing many glorious events during the year 2011-12. This issue covers the glimpse of different activities conducted by department. With aim of constant up gradation and intellectual growth of students, department has organize Industry-Academy meet with the support of our Hon. Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Mahendra K. Padalia and leading pharma personals from different Industries.

In association with university of New Mexico, School of Medicine, USA and Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Medical College, Rajkot department has organized one day stat seminar on “Perspectives on Global Health Research”. Talk has been delivered by eminent scientists from India and USA.

Scientific Activities Industry-Academy Meet (19th August 2012)

Our department has initiated a programme for active interaction between representatives from leading pharma industries and faculty members on 19th august 2012. The first meeting was organised with inaugural notes from Prof. (Dr.) Mahendra K. Padalia Vice-Chancellor of Saurashtra University. The participants express their view on current scenario of the industrial needs and accordingly few suggestions were unanimously agreed upon for up gradation of teaching methodology along with practical exposure of industrial working status and their requirement of trained professionals. Our department has also plans to invite leading experts from various disciplines and have interactive discussion for up gradation of syllabus, improve in skill development as per the current requirement in the pharma industries so as to strengthen their potential for placement.

Three days workshop on Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Handling (25th -27th June 2012) The aim of the workshop was to provide basic knowledge and hands on training on sophisticated analytical instruments including HPLC, HPTLC, FT-IR, Particle Size Analyzer, UV Spectrophotometer, Dissolution Test Apparatus, and Brookfield Viscometer. The target group of workshop was the students on verge of completing bachelor’s degree, to provide basic skills and solutions to solve problems in equipment handling.

16th National Convention of Society of Pharmacognosy and International Symposium on Herbal and Traditional Medicine “Frontiers in Drug Discovery from Herbal & Traditional Medicine” (9th to 11th march 2012)

Herbal medicine have shown always been a major component of traditional system of healing in developing countries, which have also been an integral part of our history and culture. The conference will provide educational opportunities for pharmacist, pharmacologists, Pharmacgnosists, botanist, ethanobotanist, ethanopharmacologist, modern scientists and other involved in research, development and marketing of herbal and traditional drugs used in health care. This national convention and international symposium will emphasize upon the drug development from natural resources with a special focus on herbal drugs used in Indian system of medicine and also highlight the needs and requirements for research and development of natural products in general and Phytomedicine in particular through international collaboration and coordination. Perspectives on Global Health Research (8th January 2012)

In the entire Gujarat region only department of Pharmaceutical sciences is recognized as center for global health research by University of New Mexico, USA. As a part of this collaboration department has organized one day state level seminar on “prospective on global health research” (8th January 2012). More than 50 doctors were participated and share their views on global health problems. Many eminent speakers from USA and India have delivered talk on different problems associated with global health. Mr. Mihir Raval is attending a international conference at Barcelona spain “fourteenth International workshop on Physical Characterization of Pharmaceutical Solids” (June 25th – 28th, 2012) and present a poster titled “Role of Excipients and Polymers on Crystallization Behavior of Metformin HCl to Improve Mechanical Properties”.

The novel cocrystals can improve micromeritic and mechanical properties along with solubility and compressibility of drug to directly compressible form. In nut shell, cocrystal is not only the mean of bioavailability enhancement but also it can be used as a tool for improving manufacturability of API.

More than 20 students were participated in 100 meter race and Jatin Patel and Hemang Patel stood 1st and 2nd.

In 400 meter race more than 20 students were participated and Mendpara Vishal and Jatin Patel got 1st and 2nd position.

In carom doubles 30 pair were played and tank manan and chikhaliya jasmine win the 1st price and Pratik Gor & Ezaj Patel at 2nd position.

In Chess compition Manan Jani and Kalpesh Ahir got 1st and 2nd position.

Cricket match was played between different specialization and students of Ceutics stood 1st and Quality assurance stood 2nd.
