SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY

We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us “behold the Lamb of God” before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we—his Body through baptism, the church—now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Every Wednesday evening we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 6:00 – 7:00pm with Confessions available from 6:00 – 6:45pm. The Rosary & Devotion Prayer Group meets at 7:00pm following the Holy Hour. – All are welcome.

“Let us truly rededicate ourselves ” During the procession of the palms Jesus arrives in Jerusalem to great tumult and rejoicing as the people cry out “Hosanna… blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest.” Imagine the confusion of the Twelve Apostles. Jesus has been spending time with them in the recent weeks pri-or to the Passion trying to get them to understand that His time of suffering was near and approaching, and that is the reason He must go to Jerusalem. And here is the crowd welcoming and praising and laughing and celebrating His presence. We are not much different in many ways, but now is the time for us to really embrace and understand the sacri-fice the Lord made for each of us, and the incredible gift He has given us. Today as our Passion Sunday Mass pro-gresses at St. Joseph we get an overview of what is to oc-cur during this holiest of weeks, including the institution of the Eucharist, the passion and death of the Lord, the prediction of His Resurrection, and then His Resurrection itself. In these coming days of Holy Week let us truly rededicate ourselves to being His disciple. Your in Christ Jesus, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week’s journey of faith “The Three Days of Easter.” The origins of many of our observances, including today’s blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, a woman living a conse-crated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrim-age to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich litur-gies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sis-ters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ’s passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today’s joyous pro-cession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very an ancient tradition is within your grasp. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Light A Votive Candle Catholics rely greatly on prayer, as we acknowledge and seek peace and refuge in conversation with God, or ask friends to offer prayers for us. What comfort is ob-tained in the knowledge that someone dear is offering prayers to the Father on our behalf! It is this same motivation, which prompts devout souls to burn candles in the church, or even before holy images in their own homes. Prayer, practiced as a virtue, is a continual uplifting of the heart to and union with God. While we carry on with our daily duties, the candle we have lit burns faithfully as a constant prayer to God, reminding of our love and our petitions. As long as the flame is glowing we can imagine there are angels pre-senting at the Throne of God, the prayers of the entire Church for our intention. Hence, the pious custom of lighting vigil candles is a highly commendable and most efficacious means of obtaining the choicest blessings for ourselves and for loved ones. A votive candle is an offering made to God through the intercession of the Saints and so it should not be con-sidered a normal retail “purchase” as other secular items we tend to buy. Recently we increased our candle dona-tion request to $5.00 - It had been 14 years (2003) since our last candle donation increase. Please note that candles not obtained directly from St. Joseph the Worker Church are forbidden due to insurance policies. Any outside candle found in the church building will be removed and thrown away. Thank you, for your understanding.
