Student Career NewsHAPPY NEW YEAR!

The new year is a fantastic time for students to continue to dream, reflect on ideas for their future, develop plans, work towards goals, and witness their dreams become reality. Life/career planning is a very personalized process.

What are we up to in the wonderful world of Career Development in Elrose and Eston?

* Career Education 8/9: If you have a son/daughter in Grade 8 or 9 Career Education class, ask them about progress with myBlueprint. They are currently using this platform to learn more about their learning styles, personality types, set life/career goals, investigate various occupations, etc. As well, we have a Classroom Notebook set up so can always access our information and activities.

* Grade 10 Students: In the new semester, Grade 10’s will progress with life/career investigations using the myBlueprint career planning program as an ePortfolio tool. Once we learn more about how this new tool works, students can share their portfolios with parents/guardians, etc. Parents are the key influencers in the life/career decisions of youth so this will be a fantastic feature!

* Grade 11 Students: In semester 2, Grade 11 students will be completing Career Assessment inventories to help them better explore their interests, values, and skills then examine how their personalized strengths and interests align with various occupations. This is another career planning tool our Sun West School Division provides in support of life/career explorations. Grade 11’s may also want to consider attending post-secondary informational sessions open to Grade 11 students (a few of which are mentioned in this newsletter).

* Grade 12 Students: This is an important time to continue to research and make informed life/career decisions for the first steps upon graduation. If students applied for post-secondary institutions, a transcript request may have to be sent “after January Exams” and “after June Exams”. Info on how to do this is contained in this newsletter. Scholarship opportunities still exist! See the scholarship section for ideas and take time to actively seek out possibilities. This is an important time for competitive entrance scholarships and awards at many post-secondary institutions. If you are in Grade 12 and haven’t made any decision about life following high school, don’t worry BUT please dedicate time to research and reflect on possibilities. Ask for assistance from parents, family, friends, teachers, career counsellors, community members, etc. in support of your life/career investigations. Accessing your Allies is an important part of the career planning process.

* Work-based Learning: January is a busy month for students involved in work-based learning courses. Our Career and Work Exploration and DLC Off-Site Work-based Learning courses rely heavily on the incredible support of our local and area employers who invest time and effort in helping students learn about the real world of work. Our local employers provide authentic real-world learning for our students in support of their life/career investigations. A heartfelt thank you to all who are supporting our programs this school year. Much appreciated!

O. Transcript Requests: Grade 12 students applying to post-secondary institutions MAY initially need to send a school-based transcript that includes a list of subjects they are taking in 2017-2018. I can help students with this process. In addition, students/families will soon need to request OFFICIAL transcripts from the Ministry of Education to be sent directly to the post-secondary institution(s) of choice. There is a fee for this and it is important students check off the following in their request to ensure they are not required to pay the fee multiple times. As well, students need indicate when transcripts are to be sent (for example, after final exams in January and/or after final exams in June). Most students wait and request multiple transcripts at the same time after they have applied to colleges/universities of their choice, however, be sure to pay attention to needs of each institution.

This section is intended to keep you posted of various events and open houses. However, every student’s life/career plan is personalized. As such, you are encouraged to research additional opportunities that may be more suited to your life/career planning process.

It is virtually impossible to inform you of all possible scholarship opportunities. However, the fact of that matter is that significant scholarship funding goes untapped each and every year! As students, please take some time to research and investigate possible sources of funding. An investment of time and energy can lead to $$$!

ScholarshipsCanada allows you to create an account, set up a profile, and search for scholarships based on your education, skills, and interests.
