Holy Trinity—Butte, Montana Celebrates Centennial

100 years ago, in 1904, the Serbian Orthodox Parish of Holy Trinity in Butte, Montana was founded. On July23rd, 24th and 25th, Holy Trinity celebrated its Centennial. Saint Steven's Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Choir washonored to sing for this glorious commemoration.

We departed from LAX and arrived in Salt Lake City, on a smooth enjoyable flight. Our plane from Salt Lake toButte was only an hour and we were blessed to have with us His Grace, The Right Reverend Dr. Mitrophan,Bishop of Eastern American Diocese and His Grace, The Right Reverend Longin, Serbian Bishop of U.S.A. andCanada, (New Gracanica Metropolitanate) and Administrator of Western American Diocese, V. Rev. Nikola Ceko,V.Rev. Stavrofor Miladin Garich, Administrator of Jackson and Rev. Deacon Triva Pavlov. You can see we had avery Spiritual flight.

We arrived at Butte about 4:10 pm, Friday, July 23rd. Our first look at the scenery was Breathtaking. Thepanoramic view before us was awesome. Butte, alias “Richest Hill on Earth” was named so for its copper, silverand gold.

Looking down upon us on top of the Continental Divide at 8,510 feet overlooking Butte, Montana was the non-denominational, 90-foot steel statue of “Our Lady of the Rockies.” This statue was dedicated to all women, especially mothers. It gave me a feeling of contentment and peace to have the Holy Theotokos looking after useveryday.

Friday, July 23rd:8:00am: Golf Tournament

5:30pm: Vesper Services

6:30pm: Dinner with Guest Speaker-Fr. Damascene, St Herman of Alaska Monastery.

We arrived late Friday, July 23rd, just in time for a fish dinner and for several hours of listening to tambura musicand socializing. The incredible Jedinstvo Tamburica Orchestra from Phoenix, Arizona provided music. Wow!Can they sing and play! Also on the program was the delightful talented Drina Folklore Group from Seattle,Washington. They organized their group only a year ago and are quite entertaining. Their costumes werebeautiful and the girls were adorned with gold coin necklaces. Father Ilija Balach and his Popadija Carol haveaccomplished much since his assignment to the Seattle parish, and the organization of this Folklore group wasone of them.

Saturday, July24th:10:00 Hierarchical Divine Liturgy

In attendance were His Grace Bishop Longin, His Grace Bishop Mitrophan, and His grace Bishop Nikolai Dio-cese of Alaska O.C.A. Priests, Monks and Deacons from all over the western states, including Alaska, werepresent. There were approximately four Deacons and thirteen Priests also in attendance. Saint Steven’s Cathe-dral choir, directed by Lisa Milena Simikich, sang responses. In addition, the beautiful voices of Abbess MotherMichaila and Sister Eufemia of the St. Paisius Serbian Orthodox Women’s Monastery, Safford, Arizona, en-hanced the Liturgy with an even more spiritual flair. Memorial Services were said for Archimandrite Sebastian,Archimandrite Dositei and all those that served in their Holy Altar, founders, benefactors and all reposed parish-ioners of the parish.

After Liturgy from Noon until 5:30pm was the festival. Music by Jedinstvo Tamburica Orchestra and perfor-mances by Drina Folklore Group.

5SSF Hi-Notes

This year, as in previous years, I had the opportunity to attend the Choral Workshop sponsored by the Serbian SingingFederation (SSF) August 13-15th hosted by SSS Sloboda, Lansing, Illinois. I came away wanting to share my workshopexperience with my family and my friends through this narrative. As I started writing, I gave great consideration to how toorganize my thoughts to focus on what, from my perspective, is the reason I attend; the Spiritual, educational and socialrewards of the workshop are sensational.

I have been singing in Serbian Orthodox church choirs for 37 years and will continue to do so for, I hope, many years tocome. I grew up in the 50-60s, the world was beginning its love affair with communication technology, Vietnam-raged womenwere struggling to make equality in roads, yet families ate and worshipped together trying to cling to some of their respectedvalues. So, there were conflicting messages; a struggle with accepting the new ideas and clinging for comfort to the oldones.

The late Reverend Father Milan Markovina was my parish priest in Monroeville, and re recruited me to choir. I remembercoming home my first year of University full of ideas about what I thought should be an enhanced role of women in theOrthodox Church. Father Markovina talked to me at length, reminding me that Eastern Orthodox Doctrine would not changeto “keep abreast of the time.” My question then was “how can I contribute to my Orthodox Faith? How can I participatemore in the liturgy?” My choir friends are likely shaking their heads now, because through participation in the Choral Work-shop, the role of the choir, the contribution of singers and their responses is made quite clear. Each year, the curriculumaddresses aspects of the choirs’ role in the liturgy. Each participant in the workshop comes away knowing that the choirand singers are integral to the Orthodox Liturgy and each participant understands that their voice, and their commitment tosing in the choir is an acknowledged expression of faith.

I think sometimes people get fearful when they hear the word “workshop.” Hours of sitting, looking glassy-eyed atPowerPoint presentations or playing team-building exercises comes to mind. I can assure you that the SSF Choral Work-shop is a uniquely rewarding education experience unlike any other and this is due to the faculty, content and approach.

Dr. Nikola Resanovic is a shy, quiet and unassuming man. This truly brilliant musician and scholar comes alive as heexplores the tapestry of composition, words and emotion woven by composers such as Mokranjac, Bajich and Bosnjakovich. The experience of getting into the mind of the composer and understanding the composition makes the music of our Faithand Culture a poignant connection to our past, to our ancestors and what they struggled to defend for us, and what we asSerbian Orthodox vow to preserve.

Dr. Milutin Lazich is a dynamic bundle of contagious energy. His expertise takes the participants through breathing, enun-ciation, dynamics, and voice projection exercises. Don’t worry that you are a “Sunday Singer”…like Dr. Lazich says “that’sthe point.” The workshop and his sessions are designed to work with all level of experience and voices. At the end, youhave learned a bit more about making the most of your voice.

My friend, Dr. Rick Zivic, helped participants perfect their pitch giving and directing technique. He also led us in a thoughtprovoking discussion on managing some of the issues every choir faces. The discussion was lively and robust and full ofhope and enthusiasm. Rick’s commitment to maintaining the quality of the workshop is evident every year.

This year, Father Milos Vesin, of the St. Archangel Michael host parish again helped participants understand the spiritualcommitment of the choir and the choir’s ability to enhance the meaning of the service for the faithful. During his lovelysermon, he told us that the first notes of the first “AMIN” of the Isidor Bajich liturgy responses, rehearsed during workshopand sung by workshop participants in church on Sunday, flooded his memory of years past in Seminary in Serbia andbrought tears to his eyes and joy to his spirit.

The dedicated faculty and guest speakers annually come together to provide a curriculum full of enthusiasm, challenges andgrowth opportunities. The time they spend with workshop participants is valuable beyond description.

6 SSF Hi-Notes

As to the social benefits of attending the Workshop, start with the premise that Serbians are known throughout the world asexcellent hosts, and Sloboda is second to none. From the moment I stepped foot on the beautiful church grounds to tearfulgoodbyes to dear friends on Sunday, I knew I was welcome every minute.

I traveled by car from Hamilton to Chicago with my close friend, Desa Gushue, who is the president of SOCA and who hasattended SSF Choral Workshops with me. During our trip, Desa and I shared stories of growing up with many of the work-shop participants, going to festivals, singing at concerts, lengthy rehearsals and the legendary bus trips.

We arrived at the workshop on Friday morning greeted by Ljubi and Janice, hosts for the workshop as well as numerousmembers of Sloboda. A hello, handshakes, hugs and kisses were shared by all and first time attendees were made to feelespecially welcome.

Singing makes my hungry! Apparently mine is not an isolated reaction, and the Sloboda team made sure our appetites werefilled with delicious food and snacks. Workshop participants had an opportunity to experience one of Lansing’s best-knownattractions, the Friday Night Fist Fry at St. Archangel Michael’s.

Participants in this workshop had worked hard. We practiced directing and vocalization and learned sections of the IsidorBajich Liturgy. So, by Saturday night, we were ready to party! We were not disappointed! Our gracious hosts had arrangedfor us to go by bus to Skadarlija restaurant for Serbian food and entertainment. We ate, sang, danced and enjoyed thewonderful voices of Slavica Momakovic and the popular Lepa Lukic in guest appearance.

The highlight of the workshop weekend for me is always the beautiful church service, with participants singing responses. The events in my life (both happy and sad) are so interwoven with church, liturgy and choir, that the experience of worship-ping and singing responses with family and friends is often emotional. I looked around the beautiful faces of the choir onSunday and thought about the years of singing together, the wonderful memories and the bonds of friendship. This is a giftbeyond measure. If desired, participants in the workshop have the opportunity to direct the workshop choir in church. Thisyear, I chose to direct Ize Heruvimi. It was an older version that many had not sung for some time. For me, the singingevoked memories of family and friends no longer with us…and as we sang this beautiful hymn, I know I heard their angelvoices singing!

I want the organizers, the hosts, the faculty and the SSF to know that attending the Choral Workshop is always in mysummer plans. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity you have extended to us. To the hosts this year and in years past, thank you from my heart for your kind generosity of spirit. Thank you for helping me build on a lifetime of lovely memories.

If you have not attended an SSF Choral Workshop, treat yourself to the experience.

Letter Received from the Serb National Federation

Mrs. Donna Medich, PresidentSerbian Singing Federation26356 John R. RoadMadison Heights, MI 48071

Dear Donna:

At its May 1 meeting, the SNF Executive Committee reviewed recommendationsthat were submitted by the SNF Audit Committee. In its report, the Audit Committeerecommended that the SNF discontinue payin g for the monthly stipend that it has beenpaying to the Serbian Singing Federation. The Executive Committee voted to enact thisrecommendation, and effective June 1, 2004, the SNF will no longer be sending you thismonthly check.

All Executive Board Members asked me to convey that this action was regrettablytaken strictly as a necessary cost-cutting measure and should not be interpreted in anyother way. The SNF continues to value the longstanding close relationship that it hasenjoyed with the SSF, and has nothing but the highest admiration and respect for yourfine organization.

Most Sincerely yours,

Dr. Daniel PyevichSerbian National FederationOne Fifth Avenue – Seventh FloorPittsburgh, PA 15222

Dear Mr. Pyevich, On behalf of the Serbian Singing Federation, I wish to thank the Serbian National Federation for its yearsof support. Our past leaders always saw it fit for our two organizations to support one another and to complimenteach other in its endeavors. As you well know, many of our singers across the United States and Canadaare members of your organization. Whether our Parents or Grandparents or Kumovi purchased lifepolicies for us, or whether we became members on our own, our singers enjoyed the benefits of both ofour fine organizations. It is with great sadness that the SNF has come to the point in time that finances do not permit continuedcontributions to the SSF. We understand that times have changed…at one point in time the SNF permit-ted the SSF complimentary ad space in the Srbobran…and, now your financial commitment in contribu-tions to us has changed. We thank you for your letter. We wish many successes to the SNF in the future. Perhaps someday youwill once again contribute to an organization that continues to perpetuate our Serbian heritage and Ortho-dox faith in song. Sincerely,

Response Received from the Serb National Federation

September 29, 2004

Ms. Donna K. MedichSerbian Singing Federation of America26356 John R RDMadison Heights, MI 48071

Dear Sister Medich,

Thank you for your letter dated September 22, 2004 and yourexpressions of support for the Serb National Federation.

As stated in my initial correspondence dated May 3, 2004, theaction taken by the SNF in discontinuing its longstanding monthlycontribution to the SSF "was regrettably taken strictly as anecessary cost-cutting measure and should not be interpreted in anyother way." I went on to mention the close ties that the SNF andSSF have enjoyed throughout many years and our admiration andrespect that we hold for your fine organization.

The aforementioned points are irrefutable, but as you state, "timeshave changed," and it appears all our Serbian organizations arestressed financially. Until this generation of Serbian Americansrealizes that our organizations cannot function without a large, active membership, I do not see this situation improving. I do nothave to tell you, as President of a major Serbian organization, that during such challenging times, leaders have to takeresponsible and appropriate actions that are in the best interestsof their organization. It is the oath of office before God that weall seriously take when we assume these positions. Thus, ourpolicies have to appropriately reflect what is in the bestinterests of our organizations, and I would expect you and yourboard to act similarly regarding issues that the SSF faces.

As in your case, we at the SNF are seriously committed to reversingthe aforementioned trends, and you can certainly be assured thatonce this is accomplished, increased levels of mutual support canbe re-established.

Most respectfully yours,

Dr. Daniel J. PyevichPresident

S.S.S. Sloboda • Lansing, Illinois • USA

Sloboda was very proud and happy to have hosted the SSF Choral Workshop in August. There were some 37 participantswho benefited from the musical expertise of a fine faculty consisting of: Dr. Nikola Resanovich, Prof. Milutin Lazich, Dr. RickZivic and V. Rev. Fr. Milos Vesin. Each instructor presented an interesting and enlightening class to the participants. Wethank them for their fine presentations and curriculum.

Sunday morning Liturgy was one not soon to be forgotten. All of the participants sang portions of the Bajich Liturgy as wellas chosen pieces from Sloboda’s “green book.” Several of the participants were guest directors and practiced their skills indirecting the Choral Workshop/Sloboda Choir. Fr. Milos commented on how beautifully the responses were sung and that itbrought back many memories from his childhood in Novi Sad, as the Bajich Litrugy was sung when he was there.

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, the director’s lectern was blessed. This lectern was donated by Sloboda in memory of itslate, beloved teacher and mentor, +Adam N. Popovich whose picture is engraved on the front of the stand along with a plaquestating the dedication. An icon of his patron saint, Sv. Nikola is also on the lectern. It was a fitting day for the blessing as+Adam was a dedicated SSF member and supporter. The +Adam N. Popovich Director’s Award is awarded to a director bythe SSF at the SSF Singing Festival.

An informal luncheon followed with President Ljubi Hayden welcoming the guests and supporting members. Sloboda is mostfortunate to have so many dedicated supporting members who are so loyal and loving of Sloboda Choir.

Special thanks to Janice Jaksich for Co Chairing the Workshop with Ljubi; Marion Dahm and committee for the great goodybags each participant received; all the members who baked, worked and supported this event; Sladjan for the delicious food;the Social Center for their cooperation and assistance; and Fr. Milos for his wonderful presentation and appreciation of ourchoir. Thanks to all the participants who traveled to attend the workshop, which is such a treasure for all singers and direc-tors to benefit from. And last but certainly not least, the wonderful faculty for their time and efforts in preparing and present-ing such a fine class schedule for all of us.

Wedding Bells Ring at Ravanica

The members of S.S.S. Ravanica together congratulate Zlatko and Slavica Erdeljan on their recent marriage. The Labor Day weekend wedding was a wonderful occasion for two terrific people. Zlatko is a devoted memberof our tenor section. We are very happy to have both of them in our Ravanica family. Mnogaja Ljeta!

S.S.S. Ravanica Travels to Cleveland

The S.S.S. Ravanica choir extends a heartfelt thank you to S.S.S. Njegosh for all of their hospitality during arecent trip to Cleveland for their annual concert weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Thank you forbeing great hosts! Ziveli!

When Dragan and I accepted to go to the SSF Convention we were honored to represent SSS Ravanica but atthe same time we were a little nervous and anxious about the experience.

If you’ve never been a Convention delegate, it is definitely a worthwhile venture for you to experience. Since thisConvention experience, we both agree that we truly appreciate the numerous decisions, monumental efforts, andunlimited time that the Federation’s Executive Board dedicates in helping to keep this organization a mainstayin our rich Serbian culture and heritage.

Do yourself a favor. When it comes time for your choir to elect delegates for the next Convention, show yourinterest and willingness to be an active participant in SSF. You’ll have fun and learn a lot in the process.

To the Executive Board, fellow delegates, and SSS Branko Radichevich Convention Committee we thank you foran exciting, busy, hard-working, fun, and intense learning experience.

Sincerely,Petra and Dragan Koprivica

Stevan Hristich Serbian Choir • Phoenix, Arizona • USA

Sunshine, blue skies, dry desert heat, cactus; these are just a few constants in “the valley of the sun.” Another constantwas a busy 2004 for the Stevan Hristich Choir.

Looking back, the year started joyously enough with the return of Lazo Mihajlovich as choir director. Lazo came back to thefold, during the Christmas Lent, after a brief hiatus. Along with Fedja Stelkoff and newcomer Dejan Korkut, directing dutiesare in solid hands. In addition, Stevan Hristich Choir now has 36 active members. In the 4+ years I’ve lived here, the growththat has occurred is just short of spectacular.

Last year the choir received an invitation from SOCA to attend their festival. I am pleased to report, that on the weekend ofJune 4th – 6th, the choir traveled to San Francisco and took part in the annual SOCA Music Festival. In a spirit of kinship andcamaraderie, SSF and SOCA choirs came together for a weekend of song and fellowship. Here’s hoping this lays thegroundwork for future shared endeavors.

I am happy to report, that despite an unfortunate accident at the golf course, the Stevan Hristich 4th Annual Golf Classicwas a success. The event took place on Saturday September 18th at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, AZ. Thirty-two golfersattended and a good time was had by all. This has become a regular autumnal rite of passage for “us.” Thanks to all thegolfers, hole sponsors and choir members who have helped make this event so successful. Special thanks to golf chairper-sons Mark Baich and Charles Drobac along with kitchen chairperson Diane Baich. Friendly reminder to all, the 5th AnnualGolf Classic will be held in September 2005. Date and golf course to be determined. Stayed tuned to future SSF Hi-Notesfor details.

In September, choir members Donna Vudrag and Mark Borota along with his wife Suzanne and past choir member JoeKosanovich traveled to Serbia. If you’d like to hear stories about their time in Belgrade or “roughing it” in the selos orDonna’s bout with kidney stones, make sure you ask them. I’m sure they would love to share the many wonderful memo-ries from their trip.

October 8th - 10th was our annual concert weekend. Our guest was S.S.S. Mita Topalovich of Joliet, Illinois. Concert chair-persons were Mirko Vucetich and Dane Mamula. Events for the weekend included: karaoke, hotel pool party, seeing oldfriends, making new friends and singing praises to God. I almost forgot, some partying was done as well. The StevanHristich Choir would like to thank S.S.S. Mita Topalovich for being such wonderful guests. Honored guest for October 2005is to be the St. Nicholas Serbian Church Choir of Monroeville, PA.

Choir member Ken Kasavac has organized a junior choir in Phoenix. They also performed during our fall concert. Thanks toKen for his tireless efforts. Here’s hoping this becomes a breeding ground for future members of Stevan Hristich Choir.

October 22nd – 24th, Stevan Hristich Choir will be the honored guests of the S.S.S. St. Nicholas choir in Omaha, Nebraska.Approximately 25 singers will be traveling, performing and singing praises to God for the people of Omaha. Old acquaintan-ces will be renewed. New ones will be made and we’re sure a wonderful time will be had by all. The choir thanks Omaha fortheir gracious invitation…we can’t wait! By the way, did I mention some partying will take place?

November 6th and 7th the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of Phoenix, AZ will host its 2nd Annual Serbfest. The StevanHristich Choir is proud to volunteer time and effort to this important undertaking.

The Stevan Hristich Choir is pleased to announce five members were honored this year for fifty years singing with an SSFmember choir. They are:

• Stanley Dobrash • Helen Vosovic• Martha Dobrash • Milan Zec• Mira Radakovich

With 2004 coming to a close, the executive board and members of the Stevan Hristich Choir would like to wish all SSFmember choirs a happy, safe holiday season and 2005. Here’s hoping we see you all in Pittsburgh for the 2005 SSFSinging Festival.

Mark Kristen - a.k.a. - ‘Mladic’1st Vice President

21SSF Hi-Notes

On September 24, 25, & 26, 2004, thirteen choirs traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the 63rd Annual Convention of the Serbian SingingFederation. In attendance were: Alhambra, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Hamilton, Johnstown, Lansing, Monroeville, Phoenix, SanGabriel, South Bend, Steubenville and Windsor; for a total of 22 delegates and 4 proxies. It would have been nice to see a few morechoirs attending, but we had a great group of people who were all set to roll up their sleeves and get down to business.

We had quite a few first time delegates this year. This is always wonderful, because of the enthusiasm and energy they bring to thetable. Chairpersons were elected and the agenda got underway. Of course, it’s always a lot of fun when the Sergeant-At-Arms areelected to zap you with fines. If you’re caught napping, late or for whatever reason, they will catch you and the money adds up. Thisyear the proceeds bought a brick for the Living Wall for the 2004 delegates. I think the fines almost bought two.

Old Business takes up the bulk of Friday and then delegates are placed in their committees. This year we had the NominatingCommittee, Federation Advancement and Finance Committee. Federation Advancement spent a long time together and didn’tbreak up until 11:00pm that night. Saturday morning arrives early and the rest of the day is spent on New Business and listening tothe reports from the three Committees.

Finally the Election of Officers took place and I’m very pleased to introduce the new Board for 2004/2005. President, Donna Medich(Detroit), First Vice-President, Holly Jovanovich (Chicago), Second Vice-President, Ljubi Hayden (Lansing), Executive Secretary,Shirley Senic (Windsor), Assistant Executive Secretary, Georgine Stoisolovich (Lansing), and Treasurer, Bob Jakovich (Cleveland). On the Audit Committee is Mark Borato (Phoenix) Chairperson, Dan Gjurich (Johnstown), David Sekicky (Chicago) and alternateMary Paich (Monroeville). Communications Chairperson, Goran Popovic (Hamilton). Best wishes to the new Board.

We are still accepting applications for 2005 Convention and 2005 Choral Workshop. Please submit your application (with theappropriate signatures) to the Federation office as soon as possible. If you need an application, just email Shirley Senic [email protected] and one will be sent to you.

Keep in mind that the 2005 Festival will be in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania with your hosts Holy Trinity Choir. They have been busypreparing for this weekend and it would be wonderful to see a large number of choirs participating again.

It’s hard to believe that we are in October and in a couple of months the Holiday Season will be with us. On behalf of the ExecutiveBoard, we wish to thank you for your support this past year and look forward to serving you in the New Year. Please feel free to callupon us if we can be of help to you or if you can be of help to us. At this time, I would like to thank Mileva Ruvarac, Chairperson ofthe Convention and the members of Branko Radichevich choir. You guys always come through for the Federation and know how toroll out the red carpet. Thank you for all your hard work.

Shirley Senic, Executive Secretary
