3eRestoration Partnership Highlight - Williamsburgs Walk The TalkNEW MEANING FOR EX-OFFENDER MENTORING

For sure mentoring ex-offenders from ourregional jail is not easy Why Because eachperson released from the Virginia PeninsulaRegional Jail (VPRJ) has a different set ofimpediments to overcome in re-entering thecommunity and establishing a stable and self-sufficient life The good news is that there is a newresource in town that can make a bigdifference in outcomes for people who findthemselves left-out left-behind overlooked ordisregarded This special resource is called3e Restoration Inc Our Williamsburg Walkthe Talk (WWTT) mentoring programdiscovered this restoration process can

assist the mentor in practical ways to build a more trusting relationship with the mentee 3eRestoration teaches that it is the quality of relationships that can Encourage Equip and Empower(3Es) a person with great needs thus enabling them to rebuild their lives Eight mentors (two women and six men) attended a 3e Restoration training and equipping lab thefirst Saturday of February to learn about new ways of building trusting relationships At the heart ofthis process is recognizing that each person has a set of mental emotional physical social andspiritual needs to be addressed if they are to find a secure and stable life This 3e RestorationProcess is necessarily holistic that is taking all basic needs into account in order to reduce thechance of failure and recidivism In our WWTT mentoring when the inmate is released from the VPRJ we always assist the menteein attending to all the physical needs for food clothing shelter and associated needs for IDs linksto food stamps medical treatment or counseling I am currently mentoring three males in their late 40s or early 50s They each have complexproblems around employment One urgently needs very specific medical attention that he doesntknow how to approach Another has good capabilities to work but is very much compromised byhaving to wait to complete a drug rehab program before he has completed his court requirementsand the third is confused and tied up in a myriad of family and personal issues that make seekingregular employment very difficult All three need mentoring support but each needs it differently So the 3e Restoration Process encourages and trains our mentors to listen carefully to the realneeds of our mentees and to think through with them what are the next feasible steps that they areready to take in moving their life forward And the road they take must be one they are persuaded isright for them and they can see clearly their responsibility for taking the next steps Such mentoringrequires a high degree of trust wherein we never treat people like projects but as persons worthyof dignity and honor It is such a 3e Restoration Process that enables mentors to build an effectivementoring relationship grounded in genuine compassion and gracious hospitality Learn more about3e Restoration Inc by checking out the website at www3erestortioncom Written by David S Benedict WWTT Mentor since 2003February 12 2016

During the month of March five units wererented for 13 people without securehousing This was accomplished by the 3estaff under reimbursements granted underthe Virginia Housing Trust Fund designed toreduce homelessness This grant wasannounced in January which allotted$100000 to 3e Restoration Inc Recently Jon Sprankle 3es Director ofPrograms amp Care Management spokeabout renting and furnishing a home for agrandmother who was living in a motel with6 grandchildren When reflecting on theseefforts Jon said the most Spirituallyrenewing part of the 3e process isexperiencing the power of Gods people gathering to serve our most needy citizens with faithresources that lead to healing and transformation of human lives In this interview Jon expressed a highly focused passion for always being there for any Friend inNeed (those who are experiencing homeless or at risk of becoming homeless) Jon has been inthis 3e care management position since December 2015 and excitedly embraces the 3e processof walking with a Friend in Need in building relationships toward shared goals that lead to a newstable and secure life He and Tammy Harden the Executive Director of 3e Restoration Inc workclosely with the many trained Servant Leader Coordinators who walk daily with Friends in Need inthe process Not all people housed under the housing grant are in the 3e process but they are allgiven the option The more you hear about 3e Restoration stories of people being encouraged equipped andempowered to change and find a whole new life you realize how much hard work this is foreveryone yet what a very special hope and joy it is when a Friend in Need finds a stable andsecure life Thats the case when an alcoholic male in the 3e process remains sober attends to hisspiritual and physical well-being and becomes a contributing member of the community
