May 26, 2019 1 From the Great Fathers From the commentary on the second letter to the Corinthians by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, bishop Those who have a sure hope, guaranteed by the Spirit, that they will rise again lay hold of what lies in the future as though it were already present. They say: “Outward appearances will no longer be our standard in judging other men. Our lives are all controlled by the Spirit now, and are not confined to this physical world that is subject to corruption. The light of the Only- begotten has shone on us, and we have been transformed into the Word, the source of all life. While sin was still our master, the bonds of death had a firm hold on us, but now that the righteousness of Christ has found a place in our hearts we have freed ourselves from our former condition of corruptibil- ity.” This means that none of us lives in the flesh any more, at least not in so far as living in the flesh means being subject to the weaknesses of the flesh, which include corruptibility. Once we thought of Christ as being in the flesh, but we do not do so any longer, says Saint Paul. By this he meant that the Word be- came flesh and dwelt among us; he suffered death in the flesh in order to give all men life. It was in this flesh that we knew him before, but we do so no longer. Even though he remains in the flesh, since he came to life again on the third day and is now with his Father in heaven, we know that he has passed beyond the life of the flesh; for having died once, he will never die again, death has no power over him any more. His death was a death to sin, which he died once for all; his life is life with God. F rom the Great Fathers

From the commentary on the second letter to the Corinthians by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, bishop Those who have a sure hope, guaranteed by the Spirit, that they will rise again lay hold of what lies in the future as though it were already present. They say: “Outward appearances will no longer be our standard in judging other men. Our lives are all controlled by the Spirit now, and are not confined to this physical world that is subject to corruption. The light of the Only-begotten has shone on us, and we have been transformed into the Word, the source of all life. While sin was still our master, the bonds of death had a firm hold on us, but now that the righteousness of Christ has found a place in our hearts we have freed ourselves from our former condition of corruptibil-ity.” This means that none of us lives in the flesh any more, at least not in so far as living in the flesh means being subject to the weaknesses of the flesh, which include corruptibility. Once we thought of Christ as being in the flesh, but we do not do so any longer, says Saint Paul. By this he meant that the Word be-came flesh and dwelt among us; he suffered death in the flesh in order to give all men life.

New Restrooms—Capital Campaign At St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, we plan to use our portion of the capital campaign to reconstruct and expand the restrooms in the church. The existing bath-rooms will be expanded and made handicap accessible, and the women's’ restroom will grow from two to six fixtures. Two “family” bathrooms will be built: one with access from the vestibule and another by the cry room. Since the cry room is also used as a dressing room for brides, the additional restroom in that area will make it easier for wedding parties to get ready for their celebra-tions. The plumbing in our existing restrooms is deteriorating badly. The pipes and sewage lines are breaking due to the intrusion of roots from the nearby trees, and the pipes are full of roots that have to be cleaned out almost every week. The bathrooms are the most expensive part of the church to remodel. Imagine what it would take to remodel the bathrooms in your home, and then multiply that by a factor of twenty or more. To realize this project, we will need the participation of every parishioners. Everyone’s gift is important. More important than the size of our gift or pledge is our participation in this needed project. Even the smallest gift—the widow’s mite—is valuable, because it represents the gift of the person, and their desire to unite themselves with the whole community. Please begin to give some thought to the part you will play in this necessary project. To pledge, use one of the envelopes available in the church, or go to our website: www.SeasCatholic.org. For more information, please visit the Ignite website: www.archgh.org/about/ignite-capital-campaign/

As of beginning of last week, pledges total more than $1,390,000, Over 500 parishioners have participated by making a pledge or gift. Please turn in your pledge soon! Every gift is im-portant! Pledges or gifts may be made on line at our website:

www.SeasCatholic.org

Construction Update Since the front entrance is closed, temporary handicapped parking spaces have been designated be-hind the church. Please leave them for our parishioners who need them the most! A mock up of the masonry wall that will enclose the new construction has been erected near the con-struction office trailer on the front side of the church. Demolition of the bathrooms was completed this past week, and work continues to progress on schedule.

During construction, daily Mass and perpetual adoration are in the tem-porary chapel in the FLC. Evening confessions and Sunday Mass will remain in the church. The restrooms of the FLC and the CLC will be pen during all Sunday Masses. Please plan accordingly.

Continued from front page… Since Christ has in this way become the source of life for us, we who follow in his footsteps must not think of ourselves as living in the flesh any longer, but as hav-ing passed beyond it. Saint Paul’s saying is absolutely true that when anyone is in Christ he becomes a completely different person: his old life is over and a new life has begun. We have been justified by our faith in Christ and the power of the curse has been broken. Christ’s coming to life again for our sake has put an end to the sovereignty of death. We have come to know the true God and to wor-ship him in spirit and in truth, through the Son, our mediator, who sends down upon the world the Father’s blessings. And so Saint Paul shows deep insight when he says: This is all God’s doing: it is he who has reconciled us to himself through Christ. For the mystery of the incarna-tion and the renewal it accomplished could not have taken place without the Father’s will. Through Christ we have gained access to the Father, for as Christ himself says, no one comes to the Father except through him. This is all God’s doing, then. It is he who has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Former deacon and ex-Catholic, Miguel Vasquez, operates a reli-gious organization known as The Sanctuary of Divino Niño. This is not a Catholic institution and has no connection to the Church. In fact, Mr. Vasquez has joined a group known as The Old Roman Catholic Church, which is a schis-matic sect. He claims to have been ordained a priest and bish-op in this group. Be aware that Mr. Vasquez is not a Catholic bishop, and that partici-pation in his activities at Divino Ni-ño are acts of schism, which harm the unity of the Church. Let us pray for Mr. Vasquez and for his return to the One, Holy, Catho-lic and Apostolic Church.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 6646 Addicks-Satsuma Road Houston, Texas 77084-1520

Feast of the Visitation of Mary May 31 This Feast celebrates the visit, described in the Gospel of St. Luke (1:39–56), made by the Virgin Mary, pregnant with the infant Jesus, to her cousin Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, the pregnant Elizabeth felt the infant St. John the Baptist leap in her womb, which, according to later doc-trine, signified that he had become sanctified and cleansed of original sin. Mary then proclaimed the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). The Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on May 31. This feast is of medieval origin, and was kept by the Franciscan Order be-fore 1263, and soon its observance spread throughout the entire Church. Previously it was celebrated on July 2. Now it is celebrated between the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord and the birth of St. John the Baptist, in conformity with the Gospel accounts.
