From the Headmaster MACARTHUR ANGLICAN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Newsletter 15, 2008 Week 9, Autumn Term, 2008 Enter to Learn Go out to Serve The closing weeks of any term are always full of activity and anticipation, but none are quite as special as the final weeks of Winter Term. As nature begins to turn itself to the delights of new growth in this spring season, the minds of our Year 12 students are also focussed on the challenges and adventures that are ahead of them, both in the HSC and in their life beyond Macarthur. Next week we will celebrate all that Year 12 have contributed to Macarthur, through their academic efforts, their music, their sporting talents and in every other way over what, for some is thirteen years spent here. I want to thank Year 12 for the excellent leadership they have provided to the students of Macarthur and for the inspiration they have been to the younger students. While one group of students prepares to move on, others remain and are already stepping up to demonstrate their excellence. This week we have received the results of the inaugural NAPLAN Testing, completed some months ago by Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9. I am very pleased with the results at each level. The students have achieved outstanding results, with Macarthur being over represented in the top bands at each level when compared to the state results. By now families with children in these year groups should have received their individual results, which were posted from Macarthur on Tuesday. The level of anticipation is growing too as we approach the opening night of Alice in Wonderland Jr next Monday. The performers and the production team have been working very hard in preparation for next week and I am sure their efforts will be rewarded with a very successful production. I look forward to joining the audience next week. As the School prepares for Mr Nockles to take over as Headmaster in 2009, he and I are discussing future plans together in preparation for the handover. One matter we have considered in the appointment of a Deputy. I was delighted that Mr Nockles announced to the staff this week that he has appointed Mr Andrew Kokic as Deputy Headmaster commencing in January 2009. As you know, Mr Kokic is currently the Director of Studies at Macarthur and I believe Mr Nockles has made a very wise choice indeed. RILEY WARREN Headmaster

From the head oF Junior SchoolhiceS GiFted and talented camp

A number of students from Year 5 and 6 attended this camp with Mrs Clark earlier in the term. The students participated in a range of extension and enrichment activities which included Ancient Civilisations, Art, Environmental Studies and Robotics. Congratulations to Matthew Buffa, Jacob Aakhus, Abbey Bamford, Lucy Pavela, Darcy Brown, Renee Cowper and Courtney Cross who presented some outstanding work at the conclusion of the camp and represented Macarthur well during the week.

national literacy and numeracy Week and national readinG day

Junior School students had a wonderful time celebrating National Reading Day on 3 September. During an assembly in the Chapel our teachers read to the children and we also read together – all 231 of us! Students enjoyed a talking e-book called The Littlest Knight and a Chinese folk tale Tiger Son.

Junior School students also participated in a numeracy activity for National Literacy and Numeracy Week entitled Reach for the Stars. The activity was a study of chance. Students threw coins at a target and recorded the outcome before listing the variables which influenced the outcome and analysing the results of the test. The results were then submitted to the National Literacy and Numeracy Week website where they were collated with all of the results for this activity from hundreds of schools Australia-wide.

FatherS’ day Stall and FatherS’ day BreakFaSt

It was a pleasure to meet so many fathers at the Fathers’ Day Breakfast. We had a wonderful time together despite the inclement weather and the barbecue breakfast, bocce, croquet, putt putt golf, handball and pass the football were enjoyed by all.

year 6 china excurSion Last week Year 6 travelled to the city to visit the Chinese Gardens, Chinatown and a Yum Cha Restaurant to sample some Chinese culture and cuisine. The excursion was linked to the children’s study of Asia this term.

Families don’t grow unless parents invest precious time with them. In New Man, Gary Oliver writes about a difficult decision made by a professional sportsman concerning his family.

From the time he can first remember, his dream was to be a professional baseball player. Through years of sacrifice and hard work he achieved his goal.

During his successful seasons he and his wife wanted to start a family but discovered they were unable to have children. They decided to adopt four special needs international children, which led to one of the most difficult decisions of his life.

Life as he was leading it conflicted with his ability to be a quality husband and dad. Over time it became clear that he could not do a good job at both professional baseball and fatherhood… He decided to give up professional baseball.

When he left the stadium for the last time, reporters wanted to know why he was retiring. “Baseball is going to do just fine without me,” he said. “It’s not going to miss a beat. But I’m the only father my children have. I’m the only husband my wife has. And they need me a lot more than baseball does.”

After a very successful debating season, the Macarthur Year 8 Debating team have reached the finals of the Chapman Cup Debating Competition and will compete in the Finals at the Powerhouse Museum in October.

During the competiton, the team of Jake Gonzo, Biannca Furchtmann, Aleksandra Jez and Jessica Sharpe have suffered only one loss, despite dealing with the difficulties of illness and examinations during the semi final round.

In the finals they will compete against Central Coast Grammar, a team they defeated in the semi finals.

This is the first time a Macarthur team has competed in this prestigious competition and the team are congratulated on their efforts.

kinderGarten doWn on the FarmKindergarten has had an eventful term learning about farms. There have been many visits to the school farm where Mr Kibblewhite shared his love for animals and the farm. Last week the two classes went to Fairfield City Farm and had a chance to milk a cow!

This week Dylan Offord from KN showed us all around Teen Ranch where he lives.

markinG readinG’S national day

The students of the Junior School marked National Literacy Day by reading books in the

Chapel. We read two e Books - The Littlest Knight by Carol Moore and Tiger Son by Teresa Ng.

The stories were displayed on the screen in the Chapel and read by Mr Wallace then other staff members. Between these two stories, Mr Officer read a short story about rice fields.

year 4 try a FreSh StartRecently Year 4 visited the Fresh Start Bakeries in Warwick Farm. This company supplies McDonalds, so most of us knew we had tasted a Fresh Start bun!

Year 4 were impressed with the facility and with the quality control of the bakery. The students had a wonderful time and were treated to a barbecue lunch.

Year 4 were very fortunate to visit this bakery as they now take very few groups through their plant. The students asked questions and several were rewarded with a bakery cap.
