PART I VOL. 1 FEBRUARY 28TH 1980.

EDITORS NOTE:

In launching this first issue of Communicator, we are presenting an opportunity for everyone concerned with the Elizabeth Assembly Plant, to express themselves on any topic in this paper, whether it be informative, topical or comi.cal. We hope that this will be the answer to the much needed avenue of communication whichhas been lacking for a while.

Such things as sporting news, announcements, advertisements, achievements, or paying homage to a helpful mate, this is your Newsletter.

For any enqu1r1es, please see your Work Group Representative. The success of this paper depends on you to contribute.

"WELL DONE!"

The artistic merit for our Headline belongs to none other than Mike Roberts.

Mike, born in the U.K. has worked for 12 months in the V.A.P. He is very interested in innovating art procedures. Married, with his first on the way, Mike's other interests are singing and playing the gui.tar. He plays basketball and enjoys a beer.

Mike has lived in Australia for 7 years. He migrated from the U. K. in search for a new life and a warmer climate.

P.S. He is available for freelance art work.

Allan receives his Cheque from Lyall Hantken.

MEET THE ASSEMBLY "PEOPLE"

Allan Stead, a recent Suggestion Award Winner and an assembler in the V.A.P. has been with G.M.H. twice, the first time for four years and now for six years. In the intervening period he visited his home country but decided that Australia was the place to live. CANTEENS

We al l want to work and eat in the best conditions possible and we know that Management have certain obligations on Canteens.

A group of V.B.U. Shop Stewards thought they would like to be involved in up-grading the Plant 2, or Pa i nt Shop Canteen.

The Stewards approached Management, who agreed to the request.

Some problems which were highlighted were: -

Flies and outside rubbish truck Drab paintwork Dirty floors

Walls and ceilings were painted Fly catchers were put up Rubbish truck relocated

Scraps and rubbish left on tables Bare walls

One Shop Steward donated some pot plants and shlves were put up to show them off.

Another Shop Steward obtained some posters and an employee noticeboard was put up.

More time was allocated by Housekeeping for cleaning.

Most people agree the Paint Shop Canteen is a more pleasant place than it used to be and we want to keep it that way.

To do this, we need your cooperation.

Please put your cigarette butts in the ashtrays and place all rubbish in bins provided.

Help keep our Canteens clean and tidy!

BODY SHOP AROUND THE LINE BY THE SCRIBE

The spate of retirements among our goldn oldies is leaving one hell of a gap in Body Shop "Know-How". Some 12 o l d timers, with an all up service of 278 years, (with Jack Gallacher, Quality Con trol leading the field with 48 years) have elected to say farewell; we will certainly miss your expertise and especially your mateship. Good Luck, Fellas!

Domenic Di Piet r o comes up for his 25 Yea r Watch on ihe 24th of this month, making Domenic the 58th c urren t recipient in the Body Shop, including our Quality Control guys (Yeah! we still own 'em, Body Sho is Body Shop) .

Some of the more sp rightly lads (work excluded) fancy their prowess with the soccer ball and maybe, just maybe, cheeky enough to challenge any takers - for mine - "Up the Maggies! "

Johnny Sulcz, Spotwelder in our Sub Assembly area, is purveying a good line in hanging wire baskets, see him if yo u fancy good value.

The friendly card games have reached new heights, seems some blokes are going home in their birthday suits Wonder what the Mums said !

"BARKUNA"

"Barkuma h;:ts now commenced their. Annual Miss Barkuma Quest, 1980. This year is an important year for Barkuma, as it is the International Year of the Handicapped Person and it is our 10th vear of serving the needs of the Handicapped Person throughout South Australia. The prizes this year are of the same high standard as previous years, wi th the major prize being a trip for two to Perth.

We are looking for young ladies of 16 years and over, who will receive every assistance in regards equipment and advice. A Sas h will also be provid··d with the name of the Club or Business who sponsors an Entrant.

Previous Entrants have found personal satisfaction in assisting Barkuma. They also estab l ished new and lasting friendshi.ps, as well as having a very enjoyable year at Fund Raising Events.

Sporting, social organisations or businesses who wish to sponsor a young lady, please contact Julie With er i ng ton (Fund Raising Officer) at Barkuma, Telephone 254 6333.

"Barkuma" is a local charity which we have supported for some time by donating our drink cans. Keith Hinckley from Trim Assembly has organised this effort and thanks all concerned for their assistance.

"WHO'S THAT"

That was the question everyone was asking when a delightful young lady sported that sexy red pantsuit early last week. Well, that young lady is Denise Hinckley, from the Paint Line.

Denise has been working at Holden's for almost one year now and has become a favourite with all the guys on the southern side of the factory.

A swi nging single, Denise·often frequents the Old Lion Disco and creates a lot of interest when she rocks up in yer 1978 Torana Hatchback . Her 9 years in Australia since migrating fr om the U.K. have been spent at Salisbury East.

Hohbtes i nclud e roller skating and record collecting.

Denise has only one complaint about the V. A. P. She'd like more toilets for women.

The Cheltenham 1000m start is c on s i d ered the easiest fn South Australia. This little Black Champion had 61Kg on his back , aga inst 8 other horses who had hardly won a race, drawn.out in Barrier 9 away from all i.nterference, which sometimes occ urs in shor t races, when the gates opened he jumped l ike a bu l let from a gun, opened up a break of 10 lengths on the field in a matter of 300m, came around the corner 12 in front and coasted to the line to win €'Rsilv, he s tar t e d at 1/4 odds-on but there was a sprinklin of 1/3 in the rin.

Now, I am not going to suggest thAt you rush in and back 1/3 pops but the point I was making was VALUE. This horse should have been at least 1/7 on, the little black's name??? "KING ZAVATA". I 'CRICKET NEWS' I

The V.A.P. Stores had their first Cricket Match against thF V.A.P. Trinmers la:st Sunday at Ridley Road Oval. The Stores lost the Match by 45 runs.

Man of the Match went to Troy Haynes, with 19 runs, and taking 3 wickets. Highest score went to D. Evans, with 67 runs. Cbod performances by P. Tilley and Drew Haynes made it a most interesting and enjoyable day.

NOTE: Although it was a hot day, there was only one case of dehydration, -- (J. Kennett - self-inflicted the night before.)

DEAR EDITOR,

I have heard that this Newspaper is interested in carrying i tans of interest and I hope my idea can find sare space in your (our) newspaper.

It has been on my mind for sometime now that it would be interesting if the people of GMH Elizabeth could display their hobbies, say for instance in the Main Canteen one Sunday. Setting up on the Saturday afternoon and then open-house for our families on the Sunday, it may well be an opportune time at the release of the new el WB, the cars being displayed on the lawn outside and the hobbies exhibition inside the Canteen.

I do believe a large am::runt of organisation v.uuld be required, but if your (our) Paper could at least make it possible to set up a Meeting one lunch time so as to get the feeling of those interested to show and explain their hobby plus the people interested in the helping of the organising, I think this would be a step in the right way for a day with a difference.

Thank You,

D. WIILIMB)N - TRIM ASSY.
