Description:
1Pe 1:10 Concerning which salvation the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 searching what time or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did point unto, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow them. 12 To whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto you, did they minister these things, which now have been announced unto you through them that preached the gospel unto you by the Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven; which things angel desire to look into. 2Pe 1:19 And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. 21 For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

From the Messiah in Prophecy to the Messiah on the Throne A Chronological and Cumulative Examination of Messianic Prophecies, Prophets, & Psalms (for what could have been known about the Messiah in each century B.C.) Gods Word as He put it in each prophets mouth is the source of great spiritual wealth of truth that illuminates the meaning of many New Testament passages. Knowledge of OT / prophecies (sacred writings) is able to make one wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. II Tim 3:15 [strengthens faith] Prophets were moved/carried along by the Holy Spirit - II Peter 1:19-21 Prophecies of multiple prophets across hundreds of years in diverse places under various conditions all find fulfillment only in the Messiah; powerful evidence of God working His plan (Heb 1:1) to fulfillment. Skeptics, unbelievers, and those ignorant of salvation in the Messiah may/can be convinced/convicted by the historicity and reliability of the OT therefore: Prophets/prophecies firmly established on reliable historical evidence; within archaeological evidence and Near Eastern texts (amassed), OT data reliably/accurately situates (see K.A. Kitchen, Reliability of the OT). Increases ones effectiveness in persuading a lost world that Jesus is the Messiah; using the OT as those in the 1 st c. to prove Jesus as the Messiah. Equips and improves a workman to demonstrate the wisdom, glory, power and majesty of God accomplishing His eternal purpose (I Pet 1:18-21; Rom 1:2-4; Rom 16: We neglect powerful testimony in neglecting the prophets! WHY Knowledge of Messianic Prophecies & the Prophets is Important 1Pe 1:10 Concerning which salvation the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 searching what time or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did point unto, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow them. WHY Knowledge of Messianic Prophecies & the Prophets is Important Rom 1:1-3 the gospel of God, 2 which he promised afore through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh; Rom 16:25-26 Now to him that is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which hath been kept in silence through times eternal, 26 but now is manifested, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, is made known unto all the nations unto obedience of faith; 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Servant Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied before the face of Pilate, when he had determined to release him. 14 But ye denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted unto you, 15 and killed the Prince of life; whom God raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16 And by faith in his name hath his name made this man strong, whom ye behold and know: yea, the faith which is through him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 17 And now, brethren, I know that in ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But the things which God foreshowed by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that he may send the Christ who hath been appointed for you, even Jesus: 21 whom the heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, whereof God spake by the mouth of His holy prophets that have been from of old. Our Scope and Sequence - As Set Forth by Peter: Acts 3:13-26 22 Moses indeed said, A prophet shall the Lord God raise up unto you from among your brethren, like unto me. To him shall ye hearken in all things whatsoever he shall speak unto you. 23 And it shall be, that every soul that shall not hearken to that prophet, shall be utterly destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea and all the prophets from Samuel and them that followed after, as many as have spoken, they also told of these days. 25 Ye are the sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Servant, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities. Our Scope and Sequence As Set Forth by Peter: Acts 3:13-26 Lk 4:17 Is. 61 [Jesus in the synagogue concerning Himself] Lk 24:44 Jesus, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me. Acts 2:16ff this is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28) Acts 2:25ff Ps 16:8-10 (Psa 16:8 I have set Jehovah always before me: Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth; My flesh also shall dwell in safety. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption. Acts 3:22ff [Deut 18:15,19] Samuel to David (II Sam 7:11-14) concerning his house, throne, kingdom Subsequent Psalms of David (2, 16, 22, 110); ref. by Peter in Acts 1:15ff Is 35:6 (lame shall leap, the dumb shall sing) Acts 4:25-31 Ps 2 Acts 8:27ff (Ethiopian eunuch) Is. 53 [Suffering Servant] Act 10:43 To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins. [Peter Cornelius] Examples of Use of the Prophets/Prophecy in 1 st century as Evidentiary Support to Evangelism / Testimony Act 13:22 And when He had removed him (Saul), He raised up David to be their king; to whom also He bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who shall do all My will. 23 Of this man's seed hath God according to promise brought unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus; [Paul in synagogue in Pisidia Antioch] Act 13:27 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. Act 13:32-41 And we bring you good tidings of the promise made unto the fathers, 33 that God hath fulfilled the same unto our children, in that he raised up Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he hath spoken on this wise, I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David. Examples of Use of the Prophets/Prophecy in 1 st century as Evidentiary Support to Evangelism / Testimony Act 13:32-41 (cont) 35 Because he saith also in another psalm, Thou wilt not give Thy Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption. 38 Be it known unto you therefore, brethren, that through this man is proclaimed unto you remission of sins: 39 and by him every one that believeth is justified from all things from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the prophets: 41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish; For I work a work in your days, A work which ye shall in no wise believe, if one declare it unto you. The Law (S. Kingdom) Malachi fore- runner, messenger, Elijah The promise of THE seed of woman began the unfolding of Gods plan and purpose to (1) reconcile man to Himself, (2) overcome/take back the power Satan now held (death) which man had handed to him, and (3) to restore order in His creation (God man) whereby man could approach God in a God-determined relationship once again (we tend to view this as Acts 26:18; Rom 16:20; Rev 17:14 Gen 3 instead of Gen 3 Rev 17:14). The central theme or thread throughout the Bible is the development and fulfillment of this plan; we must know the Law, Prophets, and Psalms as they speak of the Mashiah. Mashiah means anointed one; almost exclusively used for kings. Masha means anoint, spread or smear a liquid; earliest usage in the Bible is Gen 28:18 when Jacob pours oil on the rock he had rested his head upon as he was leaving Canaan (the spot was called Luz at that time, later named Shechem); Before Jacob returned to Canaan, God spoke of it as the place where he (Jacob) had anointed a pillar (Gen 31:13). Significance of Mashiah ( Messiah - anointed one ) [masha = pour] The tabernacle was constructed in the wilderness and then Moses anointed it and all its furniture (Lev 8:10); Moses also anointed Aaron and his sons (Ex 30:30; this is the only instance in the Bible of priests being anointed. Kings were anointed (I Sam 10:1 I Sam 16:12ff; I Kings 1:39) Elisha in I Kings 19:16 is only prophet to be anointed Is 45:1 records only instance of a foreign king anointed (Isa 45:1); Cyrus spoken of by God as his anointed [may mean designated for specific and/or special purpose] Anointing served the purpose of setting something apart from all others, making it by definition holy, a special designation of a specific purpose, a service, having to do with Gods plans/purposes. The Psalms (2:2, 45:7) and the Prophets (Isa 61:1; Dan 9:24; Lk 4:18-21 quoting Isa 61) speak of Yahwehs mashiah and his characteristics and role/purpose in Yahwehs plan; the mashiah is called both king, priest, shepherd, saviour in His appointed place, purpose, and service. Significance of Mashiah (Messiah) and Masha (pour) In the Pentateuch the being of evil and his nature are accurately captured (II Cor 11:3 [craftiness]; I Tim 2:14 [deceiver]; Jn 8:44 [liar]) in the angel Satan (nachash shining/burning one, used of serpents (Moses bronze) and of seraphim). Satan (shaitan) means accuser, adversary, malicious prosecutor; as slanderer-accuser he maligns both God and man; Gen 3:1 - Heb: [arum] subtle, conceal, shrewed-deceive, contrive, fraud-crafter, naked; [derived meanings crafty, wily, etymology a weaver of delicate and intricate designs]; used in Prov 7:10 of the heart of a harlot. Gen 3:1 LXX Gk: [phrone-MOH-tatos; wise in the way of thinking; [compared to any of the beasts of the field]; Satan is a creature-angel, neither beast nor man. State between God and Satan, w/ man as creature in Gods image is spiritual warfare prior to sin, and in Gen 3 becomes the state between Satan and man; enmity, hatred, proactive perpetual plotting of hostility by Satan against man in general, specifically against the seed of woman. Significance of the seed of woman and enmity Gen 3 Gen 3:15 God puts hatred/hostility between the woman and Satan, between Satans seed and her seed. Heb never uses plural of seed to refer to offspring or posterity; it is a collective noun which can designate a whole line of descendants or lineage, or it may denote one person epitomizing the whole. between thy seed and her seed; he shall crush thy head The seed of woman (see Gal 3:16 for Abrahamic context) shall be a male; one who will suffer a brief temporary wound from Satan but will strike a crushing destructive blow overcoming and depriving power of Satan. [Isa 53:12 => Acts 2:24 => Heb 2:14 => Rev 12:10; 20:10] Though not explicit, Gods statement infers that the seed shall be of woman-only as He is silent on man. (Isa. 7:14 [Immanu-el] Gal 4:4-5 [His Son, born of a woman]); Heb 2:9; 14-15) The seed of Satan designates his line of descendants as a single unit; those who follow him; Jn 7:41; 8:44; Rev 12:3-4 Satan as murderer: through lies caused Eve to sin, cutting man off. through lies he worked to kill the seed of woman. [Gen 3:15 => Lk 24:44] Significance of the seed of woman and enmity Gen 3 Questions or Discussion
