Since the last Newsletter, among many other things, the new Rowing season started and Year 12s received their Academic and Service Awards and have begun their final exams. We wish them every success. Year 11 exams start on 28 November and provide valuable preparation for students in what to expect in 2017. Unley High School has always had a proud focus on student success and academic achievement and continues to do so. In keeping with contemporary education we also offer quality vocational programs, including Certificate III in Fitness. We recently celebrated the opening of a new facility for another VET program – Plumbing. The Honorable Simon Birmingham Minister for Education and Training and Senator for South Australia along with Ms Nicolle Flint Member for Boothby officially opened our Plumbing Skills centre. Mr Andrew Clarke CEO of the Master Plumbers Association joined representatives of the Local Inner South Curriculum Alliance, Greenway Architects, TAPS, PEER, Fusco Constructions, Reece Plumbers and staff trainers

and plumbing students to celebrate the facility and the successes of Unley’s programs. Plumbing began at UHS in 2011 and those first students are finishing their apprenticeships this year. Now fully qualified, they are beginning to host work experience students from our current groups. When destination data was analyzed early this year of the 15 students in the 2015 Plumbing Plus group, 12 were in full time apprenticeships, 1 was at University and 2 were completing their SACE by including their vocational training toward SACE Credits. We are very happy to be able to offer our courses in the new Skills Centre and thank Assistant Principal Richard Whaites, our VET coordinator Toby Watts and our other great trainers for their work. We also acknowledge our many strong connections to the plumbing and building trades, and recognise their generous support.

At about this time last year we expressed interest in the DECD Voluntary Amalgamation Program. As you would be aware, the process is now at an end following a vote by parents of the current students at Pasadena. I would like to thank both communities for their consideration of the program. At Unley High we will move forward with our usual busy school calendar, and in 2017 look forward to welcoming our largest group of Year 8s for many years . Students, staff, parents and Governing Council will continue to promote our successes and progress our improvement agenda – in our daily work of teaching and learning, and through the STEM building work and our other facilities plans.

As tradition dictates, Remembrance Day was commemorated with the Air Force Cadets leading our school’s ceremony in the Rose Garden. In recognition of the centenary of the Battle of the Somme , the Ode was recited both in English and in French. Our students truly exemplified our school values and reflected the seriousness of the occasion in their demeanour.

RESPECT DIVERSITY EXCELLENCE COMMUNITY

UNLEY HIGH SCHOOL

I am a local. I live locally, shop at the local shopping centre and have been a part of the Unley community as a parent as well as a teacher. It is no surprise that when I buy my bread, or order my coffee, eat out, or go to the movies that my paths cross many Unley High students, both past and present. It is with great pleasure that I say Hi, maybe stop and have a chat, and for those that left school some time ago, catch up with what they are up to and what they might be doing with their lives. We might share a story, a memory or have a laugh. Inevitably, the stories these young people share are positive. Students talk about Unley with great pride. They acknowledge the relationships and connections they have made here with genuine fondness. Many have returned to the school to be a part of the volleyball programme, to be a guest speaker in a class, at an assembly or to coach a basketball team or rowing crew. Some recognise that while they didn’t take advantage of what was offered at the time they still appreciate the experiences that helped shape them into who they are. When I think back about the student they were at school, I think about the contributions they may have made while they were here, the experiences and interactions that we may have shared along the way but more importantly who they are at that moment. What I don’t remember about any of these students is their ATAR score. As you move toward the end of the year there is this number looming ahead of you and it may be something that you aspire to or it may be inspiring you to study. It may or may not be the number that opens a door for you next year. But remember it is only a number and it does not define the person you are or who you will become or how you will be remembered. Who you were at school and the person you become when you leave is all about the choices you have made along the way and what and how you have learnt from them. How you relate to others, accept responsibility, bounce back from the things that have made you angry or have made you sad, how you have demonstrated kindness and compassion and how you have taken advantage of the opportunities offered you are all important factors in who you will become in the future. Unley has played a part in shaping who you are. I want to congratulate this amazing group of young people on your journey through Unley. I said at the beginning of the year that I would only take this job on because I knew that managing this group of students would be a pleasure. I was right. I said to a group of students last week that the thing I love about being at Unley is that students never fail to surprise me, continue to inspire me and inevitably teach me things I didn’t know before. You haven’t let me down. Some of you already have your pathway set. Some of you are still deciding which path to take. Either way, remember that you will always have a connection here, that what happened for you at this school was significant and be confident in taking the next step. I sincerely value the relationships I have made with you all this year and remember to say “hi” when I see you down the aisle at Woollies.

“Whatever venture you set out to explore next year, look at it as yet another chance to step out of your comfort zone and EMBRACE your future.”

Hannah Crockett-Naini(Head Prefect)

“Thank you for opening my eyes to how great people can be, and how important they are in creating a happy existence. I’ll look back on these last five years as some of the best years of my life.”Jacob Millard (Head Prefect)

On Friday 28 November, the day that most of our Year 12 students and their families had been looking forward to had finally arrived: “Year 12 Graduation” and what a day it was! The sun shone brightly as students arrived at 7:30 looking stunning in their school uniform for the graduation breakfast. It was a relaxing time with everyone chatting with their classmates and friends and reflecting on special moments that occurred throughout the year. As the hall started to fill with parents, students and special guests, the Year 12 students and their home group teachers excitedly waited outside for the signal that it was time for them to move into the hall. As the music played, hundreds of eyes turned to see the Graduates enter. You could see the pride on their faces as their families and teachers watched on. Ms Wendt expertly compered the ceremony and entertainment was provided by Riley Muxlow who played guitar, Ms Hollis’s Year 12 class performed “Back Home” and closing the ceremony was Nathan Turtur with stunning dance performance.

The hard work and determination of this year’s cohort to succeed was evident by the number of students who were acknowledged by their achievements both academically as well as for school service and leadership.

As always our Graduation ceremony was filled with emotions; happiness that the students have reached their goals and sadness as they were saying goodbye to their teachers and Unley High school after 5 years. I have had the privilege of knowing this group of students for the last 5 years and I have watched them grow into wonderful young adults, I wish them every success for the future in which ever pathway they choose to follow.

Oliphant Science Awards Oliphant Science Awards named in honour of renowned scientist and former Governor of South Australia and Unley High School Alumni, the late Sir Mark Oliphant. It is the prime science competition for all schools in our state and attracts the most talented and innovative students from Reception to year 12.

Learning Science encourages students to develop a range of skills such as observation, prediction and communication as well as expanding their knowledge within and between the diverse domains of Science. The Oliphant Science Awards provide students with an opportunity to expand their scientific literacy by showing interest and understanding in the world around them and engaging in discussions about Science. The Awards recognise the excellent work of students with prizes in each age group and category, along with sponsor and school prizes for outstanding achievements.

The SASTA presentation night was held at The Brighton Concert Hall on Friday 25 September 2016. First Prize in the year 8 computer programming and Robotics went to Maeve Allen-Horvart along with the sponsor prize from Australian Radiation Protection Society. This is an amazing achievement for a student only in year 8. Maeve has shown in the past her skills and interest in this area and won awards in previous years. First place in the year 9-10 Crystal Investigation categories went to Bethanie Yik and Emily Zhang for their potassium Alum Crystal and report. They worked hard on their crystal for 10 weeks to grow a perfect size and shape. We are very proud of the students and their own pride in their achievement was well deserved.

Students, teachers and families of the current Year 8 and 9 Music classes enjoyed a wonderful spring evening concert in the Rose Garden Thursday, November 3. Beyond the picnic rugs, the musicians presented renditions of classic and current tunes, Eric Clapton to Twentyone Pilots.

For many Year 8 students, this was their first opportunity to play at an Unley High Music event, and it was terrific to hear some skilful playing. Well done to the Year 9 Music classes who have worked hard throughout the year. Their ensemble skills have really gelled. The Rock Band continue to perform with confidence showcasing excellent musicianship. Thank you to Year 9s Dory, Daphne and Zoe, who entertained us with their solo and duo efforts. Simply fabulous!

Next major event is the CABARET, Friday, December 2, organised by the Year 10 Music classes. The show features senior music students and our extra curricular groups. In the George Cresswell Hall, 7:15 - 10:30 pm. Tickets at the door, adults $10, seniors and juniors free entry. Bring your supper and refreshments. Be prepared to take prizes home from the quiz and raffle! Further enquiries, please email [email protected] or [email protected]

UNLEY HIGH SCHOOLYear 9 News

Home group 9233 chose Fred’s Van for its Year 9 Community Service project. Students ran a sausage sizzle at lunchtime. Fred’s Van provides comfort and a warm, nutritious meal for those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness and marginalisation. Operating from eight sites across Adelaide this emergency service is delivered by the work and commitment of more than 550 volunteers. The money raised was used to purchase food to place in containers for Fred’s Van volunteers to give to people who come to the van for a meal. Recently, Theresa from St Vincent de Paul Society who run Fred’s Van, came to collect the boxes of food and cheques from the students. Pictured is Adam Neville, homegroup teacher with Theresa from Fred’s Van. Well done Home Group 9233!

UNLEY HIGH SCHOOL

Helping Teens Manage their BehaviourWe have great students here at Unley High. However, they are learning to be adults and sometimes as they go through this process, teenagers push everyone’s buttons. If you, or a family friend, has a teenager who is testing the boundaries and pushing buttons, below is some advice from the WebMD website (see link below), which I hope may be of use. There are also some other resources listed, which I invite you to examine at your leisure. Sulking, arguing, lying, and rebelling are just a few of the ways teens misbehave. There’s a good explanation for these bad behaviors. As teens become more independent, they still lack the emotional maturity they need to make informed, thoughtful decisions. The parts of the brain that control decision making and impulse control haven’t fully developed. The combination of autonomy and immaturity can lead to risky teen behaviors, like drinking and smoking, to name only two.You want your children to do the right things, but disciplining teens isn’t easy. When they talk back, you can’t just put them in a time-out like you did when they were toddlers. Effective parenting of teens requires a few adjustments to your discipline strategies.

Smarter, Stronger Discipline Strategies The goal of effective discipline is to gain more control over your kids -- without being too controlling. Set clear rules. Tweens and teens push boundaries to see how their parents will respond. It’s important to establish clear rules, and to have consequences for breaking those rules. For example, the punishment for breaking curfew might be that your teen has to stay home the next weekend. You’ll get less resistance if you involve your kids in designing their own consequences. Just don’t forget that you still have the final say. Put it in writing. so that there can be no misunderstandings, create a formal list of house rules, or type up a behavior contract that you and your teen sign. Post the list or contract on the fridge or in another central location where your kids won’t be able to miss it. Examples of clear rules include: “Curfew is 8 p.m. on weekdays, 10 p.m. on weekends, and no going out until homework is finished.” Anyone who breaks one of these rules loses television for a day. If your kids do break one of the rules, all you have to do is point to the list. Be firm and consistent. Teens are master negotiators and manipulators. They’re adept at spotting any sign of parental weakness. When you waffle and give in to their pleas for leniency, they are going to expect the same response every time they misbehave or break a rule. Being consistent about teen discipline also means that both parents need to be on the same page. If one parent always says “yes” and the other always says “no,” your teen is going to know exactly which one to approach when they want something – “I’ll think about it” or “I’ll speak to your father/mother and get back to you” may help you get out of trouble. While you’re being firm, don’t forget to also be fair and understanding. A little empathy goes a long way when disciplining teens.

Matthew Draper Cup 2016

At the beginning of each rowing season the Unley High School Rowing Club holds the Matthew Draper Cup. This fun all club event allows rowers of all ages and gender to combine in a head race format over a distance of 300m. The winner of the Matthew Draper Cup is the rower who finishes the day undefeated. The beauty of this event is that any rower, regardless of age or gender, could win on the day. This year Gabby Grimwade (Year 8) and Tom Ogier (Year 10) took out this prestigious event following a dead heat in the final race of the day. Congratulations Gabby and Tom.

Sports NewsWith the start of term 4 all of our summer weekly sport teams are into their competitions. Our mid-week teams, who have been playing since last term, are recording some great results so we’re hopeful of some grand final competitions later this term. Our badminton teams are doing well and we’re particularly happy with the number of players we have this term which has resulted in an additional team entering the competition since term 1. Our Touch Football Girls have started the season with two wins out of two and our Summer League Volleyballers have also got off to a good start. This term we have less knockout competitions than previous terms, but our Year 8-9 Badminton Girls have done very well to make it through to the minor rounds and will be competing in the finals very soon. We have our year 8-9 Girls’ Softball competition starting soon too.

Term 4 sees a lot of carnivals for our younger students. Three years ago one of our senior students requested a mixed netball competition so Southern Zone Sport got a competition up and running. Since then Unley has always been well represented at this carnival. This year was the first year that mixed netball has been offered to year 8-9 students and again Unley was well represented with three Year 8/9 teams competing. As with the senior competition, our teams were outplayed by netball specialty school, Blackwood, but our players still played really well. Other carnivals to come soon are Year 8/9 handball and, for the first time ever, year 8 to 10 Ultimate Frisbee. We have lots of keen students lining up to play Frisbee and we are lucky enough to have our new Pastrol Care Worker, Ellie Wheatcroft, on board to help them out as she has represented Australia in the sport. We’re also looking forward to Beach Volleyball and a mixed beach sports day which includes paddleboards. Hopefully summer will decide to kick in before those two carnivals!

Congratulations to all of our year 12 students who graduated last week. A number of the year 12’s received Sports Awards for outstanding contribution to sport at Unley High School throughout their time here. Recipients of this award were:

James Aldrdige Brooke Bowering Chelsea Couzner Stephen Dittmar Taylah Gabrisch

Koby Hawes Claire Harris Taj Heald Eddy Holmes Sam James

Will Longshaw Vanessa McGlinchey Arno Norrito Cai O’Loughlin Mackenzie Slaughter

Lily Walker

An additional sports award is The Brownhill Creek Good Sportsmanship Award given to just two students who have been outstanding in their representation of Unley High School in the area of sport in regard to the volume of sport they have played, their high level of sportsmanship and commitment and the example they set for younger students. The 2016 recipients of this award were Chelsea Couzner and Eddy Holmes. Congratulations to all of the year 12 sports awards recipients and we wish them, and all year 12’s, good luck for their exams and future endeavors. I look forward to seeing many of them back here as coaches and umpires!

2017 Unley High School Daily Timetable

Our new school timetable moves Home Group to the start of the day instead of after recess in order to improve:1. Pastoral care – As students will meet their Home Group teacher at the beginning of the day, they will each be able to communicate current information.2. Punctuality & consistency - Lesson times and breaks will be consistent.3. Alliance – Our timetable now matches Urrbrae & Mitcham Girls. This helps senior students to access a broader range of subjects.
