2018: TERM 4, Week 2 26/10/2018 From the Headmaster Dear Parents/Caregivers and members of the community, To start Term 4, I spoke to the whole school on embracing the making of mistakes and on how being wrong is a really important aspect of our learning community. Making mistakes and being wrong is actually good for us. We need to learn to accept mistakes (contrary to a lot of the mixed messages we receive in our culture and highlighted via perfectionist images through modern media). In fact it is a necessity as it is fundamental to developing our grit and resilience. Here are several reasons why it is good to make mistakes or be wrong; they humble us. we learn to forgive ourselves and others. by trying new things we make mistakes, taking us on a different path and off the safe path. We move out of comfort zones. we can learn new information and different ways of doing things. we learn how to recover and bounce back. This is crucial to success. Perfectionism needs to be avoided. If we avoid trying to make mistakes or be wrong we will never gain knowledge to get better or improve. Some of life's best and most interesting moments should be in the process and not the result. As humans we are all going to make mistakes and its how we approach them that matters. Yours sincerely, Jason Speedy FROM THE OVAL Last Friday we celebrated our boys and girls who have been at Southwell for a period of 8 or 9 years with a special lunch and the awarding of a badge.

Our Southwell People — Mr Matty Cole

As a Year 7 Teacher at Southwell, I love seeing: The growth of students over time, watching them learn and progress. I live for the ‘ah-ha’ moments where I can help guide students to the realisation they can do something or they work out an answer. A successful education from my perspective: A successful education is building all-round capable students who can problem solve and adapt when the need arises. It also involves preparing our students as best as possible for whatever their future may hold. I believe it needs to be grounded in real-life scenarios, problems and contexts. I believe in Southwell because: It offers so many challenges and opportunities for students to learn from the experience. It has the most amazing and supportive staff who feel more like family than work colleagues. I love to: Cook (especially for others), ride my road bike, walk or play with my dog. Also, I enjoy getting into the garden and to do D.I.Y jobs around the house - I’ll finish them all eventually, I promise! My favourite place outside of Southwell is: On the road riding my road bike. Out hiking our beautiful New Zealand bush. Visiting family over in Tauranga. My ideal leisure moment is: Walking or playing with my dog, spending time with family and friends, and catching up on the latest Netflix releases. I mean did Eleven really close the portal/gate? Is that the end of the upside-down?

From the Library

Please note that we have a visiting author, Australian Jessica Townsend, coming to speak to the Year 5-7s,

on Tuesday November 6.

This is a HUGE opportunity to hear an up-and-coming, international, author, and Books For Kids are offering

her first book, and her sequel (out on October 31), at a discounted rate.

Younger students can also print off the order form on the following page and take it to Books For Kids on Grey

Street to take advantage of the discount. Year 5-7 students will be given a printed copy of the order form in

Week 3.

If your child is not interested in this book, do consider it for Christmas presents for fantasy lovers!

Also, please note that the Library is closed during Week 4 for stocktake. We are going to ask students to only

have one fiction book on the go for that week so that we can better ascertain what is missing. If you know your

child has library books stashed away under a bed, in the car, on a shelf etc... please can you return them to the

Library.

On the subject of Books For Kids...

Books For Kids will be open on Sundays in the lead up to Christmas (Mon-Fri: 9am - 5pm, Sat: 9am - 2pm,

Sun: 10am - 2pm)

This place is an amazing Hamilton icon and if we don't use it we will lose it. The quality and variety of books

you can buy there is second-to-none, and Megan, the owner, is so

friendly... you can't go wrong and you are sure to be able to find

something for everyone for Christmas and beyond!

Shave for a Cure

Parking and school pick-ups/drop-offs

The top field has now been opened for parking at drop off and pick up times. As these times are extremely busy, please ensure that you park in marked carparks or on the top field and not on yellow lines or loading zones. Please be guided by the signage posted within the school grounds as we want all children to be safe whilst entering and exiting school.

Parent Reminders—Medical

Sick Pupil Policy

Southwell is a learning community and in order for pupils to gain maximum learning they need to be well. Often a pupil who seemed well at home can find it difficult to cope with the focus required whilst at school. Parents need to have:

An alternative person available should their child be unwell and a parent is unable to care for them.

Your alternative person’s contact details should be up to date and given to the Administration Staff. In consideration of other pupils and staff at Southwell School, the following criteria have been developed:

These guidelines have been developed to ensure the pupil is completely well before returning to school and

therefore less likely to become unwell again. The guidelines are also in place to protect other pupils and the staff

at Southwell School.

► Please keep this notice for future reference ◄

Medication Information

Nut Allergy

A reminder that wide brim hats are compulsory during Term 1 and Term 4. No hat, no play. Caps are

available but these are only to be worn for the following sports; Tennis, Softball and Touch Rugby.

Thank you,

From the Nurse.

ILLNESS RECOMMENDED RECOVERY TIME

Vomiting Until 24 hours after LAST vomit

Diarrhoea Until 24 hours after last runny bowel motion

Conjunctivitis Until eye discharge has ceased

Measles For at least four days after onset of rash

Whooping Cough For five days after antibiotic treatment commenced

Mumps For nine days or until swelling has gone

Chicken pox For seven days from the onset of the rash/scabs are dry

School Sores Until 24 hours after antibiotics started

Streptococcal throat For 24 hour from commencement of treatment

If your child requires medication to be administered during the school day, please can you bring it to school

in the container it has been dispensed in by the pharmacy – it is helpful if the pharmacy can dispense into

two lots (one for school and one for home).

On the first day the medication is to be given at school you will need to complete a ‘Medication Request’ form

– available from the office or the clinic.

We have eight pupils who are ANAPHYLACTIC if they have nuts. Some of these pupils are anaphylactic

even if they are exposed to nuts (peanuts in particular.) We would ask that you avoid sending food to school

which contains nuts e.g. mixed nuts, muesli bars, peanut butter sandwiches, nutella sandwiches etc…

They do not have a minor reaction, but a serious reaction which they can die from. These pupils all have

EpiPens (pre-packaged adrenaline) at school with them, because of the serious nature of their allergy.
