FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, This Sunday’s gospel reminds us that our true riches await us in the kingdom of heaven. But meanwhile, down here on earth, we all want to do good and be successful. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, we learn that lavish parties cannot buy us love or friends. The man in this Sunday’s gospel was also building up his storehouses, but God said to him, “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” What benefit is there in storing up treasures for ourselves if we are not rich in what matters to God? Striving for good things on earth is not a bad pursuit in itself. The challenge is to know what things “matter to God.” Yours in Christ, Father Dave ======================================== MASS INTENTIONS Monday – August 1 – 9:00 a.m. MARGARET GLUNZ (St. John’s Catholic Women’s Union) Tuesday – August 2 – 9:00 a.m. MARY BROKHOFF Wednesday – August 3 – 9:00 a.m. CAROL KRAMER TAMBURELLI (Herb Tamburelli) Thursday – August 4 – 9:00 a.m. PEGGY & ED PETROVITCH (Derbes Family) Friday – August 5 – 9:00 a.m. FRANCIS SAUERS (Verna Sauers) Saturday – August 6 – 5:00 p.m. LIVING & DECEASED OF TROPP & PETOCK FAMILIES (John & Bernice Petock) Sunday – August 7 – 8:15 a.m. CHARLES LORENZ (St.John’s Catholic Women’s Union) Sunday – August 7 – 10:30 a.m. LINUS BORTZEL (Marie Fitzpatrick & Family) + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Tuesday – August 2 nd at York Terrace Nursing Home DOROTHY A. ======================================== ASK FATHER DAVE …

WHY DO CATHOLICS MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS? Back in the second century when this practice began, it was common to honor a ruler with a gesture of respect. Whether bowing down on one knee or touching the forehead, such gestures were ritual ways to show humility before a person of great power. The Sign of the Cross became one such devotion to the Holy Trinity, and acted as a sign of recognition between early Christians who were sometimes forced to worship in secret. Now a prayer in itself, each time we make the Sign of the Cross we express respect for God and request his blessings for ourselves. ========================================

Thank you. ======================================== FROM OUR PARISH NURSE … Don’t count on wearable fitness trackers to accurately measure your energy expenditure --- their results vary widely and may differ significantly from laboratory measurement, according to a small Japanese study recently in JAMA Internal Medicine. The researchers tested 12 leading devices in 19 healthy adults, ages 21 to 50, and found that they differed in their estimates of daily energy expenditure by as much as 500 calories. Compared to the results of one gold-standard test (called the double-labeled water method), the devices all underestimated daily calorie expenditure. But compared to another type of validated testing (done in a metabolic chamber), about half the devices underestimated, while half overestimated daily calories. None of this may matter much for typical users, who may still be motivated by the devices. And as long as the devices are consistently inaccurate, they can track progress over time. ========================================
