From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Church Family,

Do you wonder how Jesus was able to make it through those last

days of persecution, plots against his life, abandonment by his own

disciples, torture and death? He prayed. I marvel at how Jesus did

it and then I remember--he prayed. Jesus started every day with

prayer: “And a great while before day Jesus went out to a lonely

place and there he prayed.” (Mark 1: 35) When Jesus was in trouble, he

prayed—ON THE SPOT! For example, in the Garden of Gethsema-

ne he prayed for strength as he faced his arrest and trial later that

night.

Through prayer our Savior received God’s encouragement, guid-

ance, peace, physical strength, and mental toughness. Jesus prayed

often during those last days because he needed the Father’s help.

Remember, he laid aside his divine power and became fully human.

He had no direct line to the Father. He had to pray as we have to

pray for divine help and empowering.

But what do we do in times of trouble? We complain about the

problem, grumble, tell our friends, write to Dear Abby, read a book

about it, listen to Dr. Phil—in hope of finding an answer. We make

prayer our last resort. By then we’ve messed up the situation or it

has messed us up. We say, “Well, I guess all I can do now is pray.”

When all human solutions failed, THEN we turn to God.

What fear and anxiety we could save ourselves if we prayed first.

We’d find the answers to our problems because we’d hear God

speak in prayer. We’d have strength to make it through because

God would give us his strength.

We are in the season of Lent when we journey with our Savior to the

cross. Jesus teaches us—PRAY FIRST, NOT LAST! It was the secret

to all Jesus was able to do, including enduring the cross. Because he

prayed and went to the cross, we received salvation and eternal life.

Will you make prayer your first resort?

If you do nothing else to enhance yourself spiritually this Lent, will

you at least commit to improving your prayer life? You’ll feel the

difference and you’ll be glad you did it.

Class of 2015: Dr. Pon Athilingam, Elizabeth Boynton, Louise

Clarke, Clif Dell, Mike Finney, Arlene McGonigle, Jennifer Rendahl

Class of 2016: Alton Barillier, Jr., Heather Brown, Bob Hoit, Herb

MacKinnon, Susan McNaught, Michael Parr, Jim Sampson

From Your Worship (and Music) Committee:

The Worship Committee was pleased with the outcome of

the Kirkin’ O’ Tha Tartans on February 15. All the fanfare

of the tartan procession to the marvelous strains of the

bagpipes, played by Richard Brown, were a sacred recog-

nition of the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church,

including the Scottish shortbread shared after the service.

We were glad that so many attended this traditional cele-

bration!

The months of March and April continue us into the Len-

ten season, which began on Ash Wednesday (February 18)

with a moving service on the meaning of Lent and dispen-

sation of ashes by Pastor Ken Shick.

Palm Sunday will be celebrated on March 29 with the spiritual presentation of the Easter Cantata

“Requiem” by John Rutter. Please join us at the begin-

ning of Holy Week on this day as the Parade of the Faith-

ful will begin the service in the tradition of singing and

waving of palms, accompanied by the handbells.

A Maundy Thursday service will be held on Thursday,

April 2 at 7:00 p.m. as Communion will be held in the

solemn tradition of The Last Supper. The church sanctu-

ary will be open on Good Friday, April 3, from 12:00

noon to 3:00 p.m. to allow those who wish to sit in silent

meditation in memory of Christ’s last days.

Easter Sunday follows on April 5 with two services

offered, 8:15 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., as we celebrate the news

that He is Risen! The Flower cross will be displayed as we

each add a blossom to symbolize our recognition of the

New Life his Resurrection brings to all! It will be a joyous

day for all to bring families, friends, and invite a visitor!

Feed the Bay is a coordinated communi-

ty outreach uniting churches in Hills-

borough County, along with Publix Su-

per Markets, designed to stock the

shelves of participating food pantries.

The goal for 2015 is to collect

180,000 pounds of food. On Saturday,

March 7 from 6 pm - 8 pm and on

Sunday, March 8 from 9 am - 2 pm.

Please visit the Publix located at Terrace

Ridge Plaza - 11502 N 53rd St., where

suggested items will be displayed for

easy access.

News from our Ruth Circle The Ruth Circle is not an actual

“committee” but they want to pro-

vide financials from 2014. The Ruth

Circle donated funds to four organi-

zations in 2014: the T.T.P. Weekday

School, the Thornwell School for Chil-

dren, Tampa Bay Presbyterian Wom-

en, and a special Christmas donation

went to Heifer International. Our six-

teen or so members donated approx.

$617 to these organizations, all the

while lunching and doing extensive

Bible studies. Quite an accomplish-

ment for only 9 meetings per year!

March 29th

Palm Sunday

Please join the Fellowship Committee as we fire up the

BBQ grille for an old fashioned picnic in our very own

garden on Palm Sunday, March 29th after the Sunday

Worship Service and Cantata.

We will be serving up Hot Dogs and Hamburgers in ad-

dition to Turkey Dogs and Veggie Burgers for those who

prefer healthier BBQ cooking. Also, on the menu will be

Coleslaw and Baked Beans. The congregation is invited

to bring desserts.

So be sure to mark your calendars, invite family, friends

and neighbors and sign up on the sheet in your Sunday

Bulletin and place in the offering plates when they are

passed around. There is no cost for the BBQ luncheon,

but donations are gladly accepted to help support the

mission of the Fellowship Committee, including Coffee

Fellowship Time held after the 10:00 a.m. worship service

every Sunday.

ONE GREAT HOUR of SHARING

One Great Hour of Sharing is the largest and

most important special offering each year.

With these gifts we Presbyterians are ready

and able to reach out with coordinated disas-

ter relief to communities and people in this

country and around the world. This is an ecu-

menical endeavor that involves nine denomi-

nations and Church World Service. Our gifts

are allocated to Presbyterian Disaster Assis-

tance, Self-Development of People, and the

Presbyterian Hunger Program.

Disasters have affected millions of people in

the last five years. The gifts from One Great

Hour of Sharing have enabled the Presbyteri-

an Church to participate in coordinated, im-

mediate aid and on-going development assis-

tance where disasters have occurred, such as:

storms and floods, droughts and famine, earth

quakes, epidemics such as Ebola, and refu-

gees fleeing war-torn countries.

The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will

be received on Easter Sunday, April 5, so

please be ready. This is our opportunity to

make a difference in the lives of people and

communities in their time of need. From Leslie McHale:

Just a quick note to say farewell to my friends and fel-

low congregants at TTPC because my husband Tom

and I are moving to Safety Harbor as of March 5th.

You are such a special group of people, and I will miss

all of you very much. I will not be too far away, so I

will be back to visit often, I hope!

With thanks for all the happy memories,

T. T. P. Weekday School is a Great

Place to be a Kid!

March is another exciting adventure here at TTPWS!

Most of the very chilly weather is behind us, and we

are starting to discuss all of the fun aspects of Spring.

Many classrooms are hatching butterflies and lady-

bugs, growing gardens, raising tadpoles and discuss-

ing the scientific components that are involved with

all of those various activities! Many of the thematic

units being discussed this month include plants and

flowers, farm animals, and the life cycle of butterflies

and frogs. We also celebrate the birthday of Dr.

Seuss, and many classrooms will be sampling some

Green Eggs and Ham!

We currently do not have any open-

ings in our school! We do, however,

have openings for our 2015 Summer Camp program

as well as for the 2015 – 2016 school year. We are also

offering Summer VPK again this year, and are now

accepting registrations for that program.

Registration for these programs is ongoing until we

are full. If you, or anyone you know, are in need of a

quality preschool, afterschool or extended day experi-

ence, please have them contact the school office for

more information. We are a Voluntary Pre-K provid-

er (free preschool for children who will be 4 years of

age by September 1, 2015), a School Readiness pro-

vider, accredited by NAC, and are considered a Gold

Seal Provider by the state of Florida!
