February 2016 – Beyond the Glass 1
From the President
As some of you may
recall, February is the
anniversary month for
the founding of the
Cedar Rapids Corvette
Club back in 1963. The
President’s vintage
picture for this
newsletter was taken
about six months after
that event as I was
preparing to start the 5th grade at Harry Spence
Elementary School in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The club is now 53 years old, and even though Linda
and I have been members for only seven of those years,
we have really enjoyed our time as part of the CRCC
family. We have met so many nice people and made new
friendships. We have enjoyed club cruises and other
events including all the fun stuff we did in 2013 to
celebrate CRCC’s 50th anniversary. For those of you new
to the club, we had a variety of special events including
a great banquet at the Marriott and some track time and a
picture session for our Corvettes at the Iowa Speedway.
Later that summer we rented a luxury suite at the Iowa
Speedway to watch the Indy Race. There are photo
albums on our secondary website documenting all the
fun.
We have gone on Corvette trips with our new friends to
Kentucky (Corvette factory, Museum, Bourbon Trail,
Mammoth Cave) and also South Dakota (Badlands,
Black Hills, Devil’s Tower WY.)
Linda and I feel that joining the CRCC really has made
Corvette ownership so much more than just having a fun
exciting car to drive. Participating in the CRCC adds a
whole new dimension with rewards of friendships,
memories and community service. It’s a lifestyle more
than a car.
Not many clubs last for 53 years. It is the people of this
club willing to participate, volunteer, and do the work
that keeps it going year after year for decades. I feel
these same people are likely the ones who enjoy their
club experience the most.
It has been suggested that we do something to recognize
people for their years of membership. I definitely think
there is merit to the suggestion and I will make it a topic
for discussion at our February meeting.
While some of our members hide out in Arizona, Texas,
and Florida, we continue to be treated to a relatively
mild winter. Our snowbirds are also missing out on our
monthly dinner, monthly breakfast, and our action
packed meetings. We on the other hand, can take solace
that Solstice (I had to write a sentence with those two
words next to each other) is six weeks in the rear view
mirror so the days are quite a bit longer. I’m sure we will
still have some weather setbacks, but its enduring winter
that makes springtime more enjoyable.
Safe travels and stay warm, Chris

keep track of the number of ballots that are
printed and sent out so Trustees know the
answer to those questions in case they are asked.

November meeting will be eligible to vote.
The ballot count and when members are eligible
to vote will be added to the standing rules when
they are edited.
Discussed the CRCC volunteering to help other
organizations with their events. What liabilities do we
incur? The following was decided:
A certificate of insurance from our insurance
company can be given to the organization that
asks for one.
Events will be voted on to become a club event.
If it is a club event the CRCC members will sign
waivers to constitute coverage.

is $120 for two years. It was decided to renew the
membership for two more years and work on utilizing
the site.
Current features offered: event photo albums,
member photo directory.
Member suggested features: discussion forum,
buy and sell, borrow and lend.
Emergency plan for critical club duties or events.
(Mentoring a designated backup)
a. Treasurer – President and secretary will step in

the CRCC paid for two booths for members to sell items.
We are looking to reserve the same two booths again this
year. This will be brought up at the January meeting.
The Museum Banner will be put up at Pat McGrath’s. In
May we will auction off one.
Discussed having a Special Event Coordinator for

been completed.
Membership renewals for 2016 are at 187 members.

lending and borrowing specialty tools among club
members. Vice President Diane Bowen would keep track
with an inventory sheet of who has what and who
borrowed what.

February 2016 – Beyond the Glass 7
CRCC Club Members, thank you
I went to a meeting tonight, January 12,
to turn over my duties as CRCC
Competition Director to Mark Hamer.
The last couple of weeks I’ve been
making notes and lists of everything
that Mark might need to transition the job smoothly. As I
worked, trying to recall every problem that can come up
and how to deal with it, I realized how much of what I
did was dependent on the help of our club members.
I’d like you to know the people who pitched in, gave up
their weekends and let me boss them around. My
husband, Larry, who very conveniently for me, was the
governor and took care of every detail pertaining to the
NCCC competition rules sanctions, flyers and reporting
of points. He also took responsibility for the timing
equipment, including actually running it. His help and
support has been my rock.
Garland Groom, whose interest and participation in
competition has been unwavering from the start.
Roger Thompson, who is always the first one there, sets
up the track, techs the cars, and anything else that needs
doing.
John Pickrell, a member that many of you don’t know.
His job makes it hard for him to get to meetings, but he
always comes to do the timing. His expertise with
computers makes him invaluable to our event.
Lori Brendes, who in the last few racing events has
volunteered to haul the club trailer. She helps get the
cones out on the track and had the excellent idea to
photograph the set up, keep the photos in the trailer for
reference, and is also there at the end to pick them all up
again.
John Watertor, who has been competing for years, techs
cars, helps with set up of equipment and shelters and has
been known to fetch the donuts on Saturday morning.
Over the years, I think he has performed every task
related to running an autocross.
Gerry Groom, who doesn’t even race, brings his bike to
run out to fix cones, helps with set up and tear down. He
has teched cars, worked staging, and is always quick to
lend a hand.
Doug Blake, the wild man on the track. He’s fun to
watch, and he always helps as much as he can.
Al Willenborg, who always shows up early, lends me
coolers, brings the big coffee pot, and is a great problem
solver. His support of competition has meant a lot.
Brian and Felicia Richardson, a dynamic duo who come
early and stay all day. Brian techs cars, works the staging
area, and helps tear down. Felicia has a knack for
spotting what needs to be done and then doing it. She’s
always willing to work.
Bob and Diane Bowen, another pair of wonderful people
who taught Larry and me everything about running an
autocross. Remember the years of keeping the data by
hand? They have been there for us since the beginning.
Diane has organized the Pizza Party forever, and Bob
has served in many ways, including being a human
antenna.
Mark Hamer, always an enthusiastic supporter of the fun
runs and the autocross. He’s yet another club member
who comes out to help where ever needed.
George Letson is always willing to be the guy that sits in
the truck out by the second or third turn, in case there is
trouble. This is usually hot and boring, boring being a
good thing in this instance.
Dick Butschi, a cheerful volunteer who helps get things
ready and helps put everything away.
Larry Bushaw comes out for almost every racing event.
He sits out on the stage and calls in the downed cones,
missed gates, etc., usually by himself. This is a no fun
job, and speaking of no fun jobs, I’d like to thank him
for figuring out my cash box.
Bob and Marlys Bitterman, whose support and
generosity mean the world to me.
The Retired Guys, the ones who have washed the trailer,
made repairs and obtained tools and needed materials,
and generally have adopted the trailer as their baby.
I could name at least a dozen more CRCC members who
have worked at our autocross in the last 10 years. So to
all who have turned out for an hour or all day, who stood
in the sun or the rain, wrestled with shelters, hauled
coolers, brought food, donated supplies, or gave me a
hug or a laugh when I needed it, thank you. You’re the
best!
Chris Beebe
February 2016 – Beyond the Glass 8
. . . On the 2016 edition of “Cruisin' the Ave” Charity
Car Show! Our first item of business is to round up
major sponsors. These are individuals and companies
that form the financial foundation of our show, donating
money which covers our operating costs and allow us to
pass on proceeds to our four selected charities. Our
charities, again this year, will include:
Miracles-In-Motion
Clothe-A-Child
Brain Injury Alliance of Eastern Iowa
Catherine McAuley Center
We have a long list of major sponsors that will be with
us again, some of which have been on board with our
show for several years. Included are:
Master Tool & Mfg.
ADM Corn Processing
Klein Tools, Inc.
Performance Concepts
Blair Ridge Dental
Pat McGrath Chevyland
Premier Advisors
Barron Motor Supply
Dream Machine Garage (formerly Duffy's
Collectible Cars)
DynoMike Power Tuning
City Revealed Magazine
Lindale Mall
KHAK & i107-1 Radio Stations
This is the current list of repeaters. A few have dropped
by wayside for various reasons, and some have not been
confirmed, but very well may be back with us. And there
is always room for new sponsors. I would ask our
members to help us with any hot leads on companies and
small businesses that they are familiar with that could
lead to new sponsorships and in turn, more funds for our
charities. The sponsorships do not have to be major ones,
as we always seem to need a couple new trophy
sponsors, which run considerably less. I would also urge
members to patronize these businesses throughout the
year, in any way that you can, and let them know that
you're with CRCC when you do.
And as the wheels of the show begin to turn this year, I
ask and urge all members to do what they can for our
show. There are several committees to help out with,
some of which would involve members weeks before the
show date (which is Saturday, June 11th). You do not
have to be experienced at these jobs. We will guide you
through the experience. It's a great time, working
together to raise funds for these four local organizations
that need our help to keep on helping those less
fortunate. You may have found a couple thank-you
letters from two of our charities here in this newsletter.
Please make a difference. Get involved when the time
comes. Thank you!

C5 Dual Fuel Tank Operation
Did you ever wonder how your C5 (and probably
C6) dual fuel tanks work? The C5 has two 9 gallon
fuel tanks – one on the driver’s side and one on the
passenger side. When you fill the tanks, the fuel
flows through an upper pipe to both tanks. Both
tanks have a fuel pump and float/sender unit BUT,
the fuel pump in the passenger side tank is simply a
siphon type pump with no moving parts.
When you start the engine, the driver’s side pump
pressurizes the system. Excess fuel pressure is
returned to the passenger side tank and to its siphon
pump. Once that siphon action starts, the passenger
side tank will pump all available fuel to the driver’s
side tank until that tank is completely filled. That
siphon action will continue even after the engine
has been shut down. The system always keeps the
driver’s side tank full if there is available gas in the
passenger side tank. Something to think about for
weight distribution if you are an autocrosser.
Both tanks have a float and fuel level sending unit.
The powertrain control module (PCM) interprets the
information being supplied by both senders and
feeds that information to the body control module
(BCM) and then to the fuel gauge. The powertrain
control module does not always read actual fuel
levels. There are preset voltage limits established
for full and empty. When both tanks are full, the
gauge will read full. When the gauge is reading half
full, the passenger side tank is empty. When either
of the tanks exceed the preset voltage limits the
body control module is estimating the amount of
fuel remaining until the actual fuel level falls below
half tank. At that point the fuel gauge is displaying
“real” fuel levels again.
On a side note: I have noticed that my C5 fuel
gauge gives me a pretty accurate reading. Each
“hash” mark on my gauge represents one gallon of
fuel. Check it out sometime.

Thank You Letters from two of our chosen charities from our
“Cruisin’ the Ave” Charity Car Show
February 2016 – Beyond the Glass 15
February 2016 – Beyond the Glass 16
I am enclosing a questionnaire to find out what you the members want the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club to offer
you. I sometimes hear that “I joined the club to find out more about my Corvette. I joined to socialize with
fellow corvette owners.” We, the E-Board, would like to hear from you some specific ideas to make this happen.
We want to garner more interest by offering more activities, outings, and food experiences other than: our once-
a-month dinner out, Halloween Party, BBQ cook off and Christmas Party. We have our own car show in June
and are participating with other car shows in the area as well as Camp Courageous. Our car show, of course, is
to contribute to our four charities: Clothe-a-Child, Brain Injury, Miracles in Motion and Catherine McAuley.
In order to do this, we need some input and fresh ideas from you the members of the club. Please look over the
enclosed questionnaire and use it to help get your creative juices flowing with some thoughts and ideas to
“freshen up the club”. You can e-mail your input to any e-board member, or jot them down on a piece of paper
and bring them to the February meeting, or make a copy from the newsletter and jot your ideas down on that. I
will bring some extra copies to that meeting. We would like to be able to compile these comments and then
present them at the March meeting. Some ideas may have to wait until next year's program.
It would be nice if we could get started at the February meeting by offering some type of a “Corvette Talk”
session from 6:30 until meeting time at 7:00. If anyone has an idea, something they would like to present or
know of someone who would be willing to present, please contact myself or our President, Chris Thompson. We
would not continue these before meeting “talks' during the summer months as we are all busy with ours and
other car events and our own personal lives.
First and foremost, we would like to hear from the ladies of the club. If you are not interested in the “Corvette”
talk for that night, what is there that the ladies would like to see or do? I was thinking, with permission, of
course, that the ladies could meet in the lounge by the service bay.
Please take a few minutes to look over the questionnaire. We (CRCC) can be only as good as the ideas and
comments you give us.
Thanks!
Diane Bowen-VP
