1 From the Prez Esther Imbagliazzo, CMA Volunteer President VOLUNTEERS NEWSLETTER • July/August 2010 The Annual Awards Dinner is a wonderful time for CMA volunteers to share a meal, share stories and honor all the volunteers who work so hard to make the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium a place of learning and pleasure. This year was no exception, thanks to the Steering Committee’s Special Events Chairman, Bob Bailiff. Bob, along with his wife Shirley and daughter Cheri, worked hard to make the evening a success. Everything was lovely, from the table decorations to the door prizes. The head of the Pacific Region for the Department of Recreation and Parks, Mark Mariscal, entertained us with his guitar and his version of “This Land is Your Land.” The staff of CMA sang along with words praising the volunteers, staff and the many programs offered at the Aquarium. Larry Fukuhara once again outdid himself awarding his special “Larry Prizes.” While this night is set aside to pay tribute to all the hard work and talents of our more than three hundred and fifty volunteers, we also give special awards to volunteers who give an extraordinary amount of time and talent. These awardees are nominated by the staff and the volunteers. This year our awardees were most deserving. The Distinguished Achievement Award is given to volunteers who have displayed a high level of reliability, dedication and involvement when participating in any Aquarium- related activity. The seven recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award are: Henry Jurgens, Dan Frickle, Joe Moeller, Christina Owen, Peg Rossney and our two youth winners, Vince Amalfitano and Kayla Kelly-Slatten. The Marji Frank Award is given to a person who cares about the Aquarium and all the people participating in its affairs. He or she is ready to help anyone to the best of their abilities. This person treats everyone with respect and maintains a cheerful attitude. This year’s Marji Frank Award winner is Kathy Kann. The hallmark of this recipient is an extraordinarily high level of individual merit and effort on behalf of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Bobbie Hedges is the winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Congratulations to all. Joey Pallares gave a special award to a young volunteer who is fighting her own battle to regain her health. Julia Hernandez was honored for her willingness to help whenever and wherever needed. Despite her illness she has been a shining light at CMA. Our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. The election of the 2010/2011 Steering Committee Members is the one piece of business that is essential to this event. Your members for the coming year are: President — Esther Imbagliazzo Secretary — Don Eichhorn Continuing Education — vacant Recognition Chair — Marge Stockett Newsletter Chair — Sherry Ruffer Special Events — Bob Bailiff Training Co-Chair — Jane Seaburn Training Co-Chair — Bob Bailiff A big thank you to the anonymous donor of the 75th Anniversary mugs. We don’t know who you are, but you are very generous and the mugs are much appreciated by the volunteers. Thanks to Bob Bailiff, CMA is $250 richer. Bob retired from 3-M after more than 25 yrs. of service. 3-M has a policy of donating money to an institution where either an employee or retiree donates at least 25 hours a year. Bob more than qualifies. Thank you to 3-M and to Bob.

VOLUNTEERS NEWSLETTER • July/August 2010

The Annual Awards Dinner is a wonderful time for CMA volunteers to share a meal, share stories and honor all the volunteers who work so hard to make the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium a place of learning and pleasure. This year was no exception, thanks to the Steering Committee’s Special Events Chairman, Bob Bailiff. Bob, along with his wife

The head of the Pacific Region for the Department of Recreation and Parks, Mark Mariscal, entertained us with his guitar and his version of “This Land is Your Land.” The staff of CMA sang along with words praising the volunteers, staff and the many programs offered at the Aquarium. Bits & PiecesJohn Olguin, our beloved Director Emeritus, was presented the “Bold Vision” award by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce on June 10,

in recognition of his involvement in the beginning and continuation of San

Pedro’s waterfront development, in-cluding CMA, the Maritime Museum, Point Fermin Lighthouse

and the Cabrillo Beach 4th of July fireworks shows.

If you’re planning a trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium, they currently have a special exhibit of 10 juvenile (nine month-old) green sea turtles. These beautiful critters travel thousands of miles across the ocean, then return to the same beach to lay eggs each year. Normally living up to 80 years, they are among the species most threatened by the Gulf oil spill. Ruth Foley retired from CMA after 20 years of service. Herfinale was the June 11 Volunteer Awards Banquet - a pleasant “last day.” Blue whales – singing the blues, or not? They have dropped their pitch by more than half an octave over the past 40 years. There are various theories: warmer water, higher acid levels, the noise of more shipping traffic, but nothing scientifically trackable yet. The hope is that there are more of them, and their voices do not need to project as far to find mates. Sounds good! Are you a raw-bar person— just have to have oysters on the half-shell with a splash of lemon and a drop of hot sauce? Get them where and while you can. Approxi-mately two-thirds of the fresh oysters consumed in the U.S. come from the Gulf. There will be more on this in the next issue of Fins & Tales.

CMA Author’s MessageMike Schaadt, CMA Director

For those of you who have heard John Olguin tell a story, you know you’re always in for a treat. Well, imagine a whole book of those stories woven around John’s life! Yes, Dr. Stefan Harzan and I are finishing up John M. Olguin’s biography and we expect it will be available for purchase right before the holidays, with a delivery date of the beginning of 2011. All author’s proceeds will be split between Dr. Harzan’s non-profit oceanographic education/research foundation, Taras, and the FRIENDS of CMA, to support programs near and dear to John. Below is a paragraph written about John upon his receipt of the “Bold Vision” Award from the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce on June 10, 2010.

“CMA Director Emeritus John M. Olguin has spent his life in San Pedro. He has been a lifeguard, a decorated military man, a devoted husband and father and the ‘go to’ person when it comes to helping people in need. It is doubtful you could find a resident of San Pedro

who doesn’t know this man or isn’t touched by the many good causes he has supported. Words to describe John Olguin are reserved for a select few who achieve truly great things in their lives.”
