Last week we celebrated Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of Lent by attending Mass with the Parish. The ashes used were made by burning the leftover palms from Palm Sunday in 2016. The sign of the cross was placed on the head of each person reminding us of our human frailty, our sinfulness, ‘turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel’ and our connection with the earth - ‘from dust you came, and to dust you shall return’. Mrs Clark has reminded the school that lent is a special time for us all and that we need to be mindful of other people and how we can help others. Our bucket-filling programme is a good platform for this. We ask the whole Sacred Heart community to think about how we can help others over this Lenten period.

On Monday morning we waved good-bye to all of our Year 5/6 children who headed over to Living Springs for three days of outdoor activities. The children had great fun and challenged themselves in the activities they undertook. A big thank you to those parents who went along as helpers. Well done to Mrs Williams and Miss Goldsworthy for organising a successful camp. Our Year 7/8

children will head over to Wainui YMCA next week to challenge themselves on their camp.

Thank you to all those parents who attended the meet the teacher evenings over the past few weeks. Once again, if you need to meet with a teacher regarding your child please make an appointment or approach the teacher directly.

Lateness and absentees

We ask again, that if your child is sick or going to be late or absent from school for any reason, please call the school on 03 3383247 before 8.45 am. This will prevent Clare in the office having to make any unnecessary phone calls. Alternatively, use the school App to notify us.

Parking on the bus stop

We remind you not to park on the bus stop as it can cause a danger to other road users and puts your children at risk when a bus needs to drop off children and can only double park.

Marian College is holding an open evening for

prospective students and parents from 4.30 pm to 7.00 pm on Thursday 6 April at 122 Barbadoes Street. Please note there is no parking on site however there is a Wilsons Park on the corner of Barbadoes Street and Ferry Road.

Internet Safety

At Sacred Heart School children’s Internet usage is constantly monitored and children are taught about what being responsible on the Internet means. Many parents find it difficult to keep up with and monitor usage at

home.

So what is Internet safety?

Internet Safety (or cyber safety) is all about keeping ourselves, our information and our equipment as safe and secure as possible. The idea is that we apply knowledge and risk minimising behaviours while we are working, playing, searching online.

The key to internet safety is minimising online risks. Being able to do this means that families can gain all the benefits of the online environment (like communication, learning, fun, business opportunities, connection with others) while keeping safe.

If you would like more information regarding keeping your children safe online please check out the following site: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/

Kahukura Cluster Music Festival

Our cluster of seven schools (Cashmere, Sacred Heart, Thorrington, South Intermediate, Addington, West Spreydon, Somerfield) in the South West of Christchurch are collaboratively working together with our choirs to perform for parents later in Term 2 at the Aurora Centre. This is another example of how well our schools work together for a common purpose by sharing our practices and expertise towards a shared goal.

Sports Talk The Year 3/4 mini-ball team had an impressive start to

the season winning against Hoon Hay. The second game

of the season was a bit more challenging as the

Prebbleton team had played mini-ball for a year longer

than our team. A huge thank you to Leoj for coaching

the team this season.

The Junior School children are developing their ball

skills with Steve from Kelly Sports each Thursday

afternoon, and the Senior school continue to train for the

School Cross Country which is in Week 3 of Term 2.

We continue this year with our lunch provider Lunchonline every Friday. This service is provided using the Internet. It is simple to do, all you need to do is visit www.lunchonline.co.nz Please remember you will need to provide morning tea if ordering lunch online.

JUNIOR SYNDICATE On Thursday 2 March the junior syndicate (Rooms 1, 2 and 5) walked together to the Christchurch South Community Gardens on Strickland Street. We went there to help us learn about healthy communities. While we were there we learnt about how people come and work together to look after the gardens and grow lots of healthy food. We ate apple and rhubarb muffins and drank grape juice made from things harvested from the garden. The gardens recycle lots of stuff and make compost. They also have a worm farm. The gardens help people keep fit, save money and eat more healthy food. We saw lots of fruit and vegetables growing including tomatoes, beans, peas, rhubarb, lettuce, apples, peaches, grapes and lots more! Our classes have been inspired and have planted our own vegetable gardens here at school. We are excited about growing our own food and learning more about how to have a healthy community!

Thank you to all the parents (and grandparents) who came along and helped out. Your help and support makes trips like this possible. It was a wonderful day even though it was very hot!
