AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal The Year 6 Graduation Ceremony and Dance held on Thursday evening was a wonderful night in which we celebrated the achievements of our amazing Year 6 children. I was extremely proud of the manner in which the children presented and conducted themselves throughout the entire evening. They have all grown and matured so very fast and have demonstrated excellent leadership, citizenship and teamwork throughout the year. The Year 6s received their Graduation Certificates as we listened to their aspirations for the future. We will have many wonderful memories of our 2020 Year 6 children and the manner in which they have worked together and have been such great student leaders in what has been an extraordinary year. Many thanks also to our amazing Choir who sang so beautifully throughout the evening and featured a lovely song, “Farewell to Wattle Grove”, written by our very own Mr Honey. Special thanks to our very impressive Student Speakers, Charlotte and Oliver, for their outstanding effort in conducting the Ceremony. Many thanks also to the wonderful parents of our Decorating Committee led by Mrs Kristie Thomas and Mrs Claire Thomas-Peti who decorated the venue so beautifully. A big thank you to our amazing staff who worked tirelessly to ensure that this Ceremony was a memorable one for all the Year 6 children and their families. Special awards on the evening were presented to: Rosie Kelly– 2020 Award of Excellence Tegan Carter– Outstanding Citizenship Award 2020 Emilio Matanguihan– 2020 Academic Award Kyle Jyen Ng– 2020 Sports Achievement Award Ethan Esslemont and Tejas Kumar – Lesmurdie Senior High School Scholarships Congratulations to all of these award winners and to all the Year 6 children on their successes and achievements at Wattle Grove. We hope that you have as many wonderful memories of your primary school years at Wattle Grove as we have of you as students. Never give up on your dreams…..you can achieve anything. Be cooperative, be caring, considerate, compassionate and kind along the journey, as these are the qualities that people will remember most about you. Following the Graduation Ceremony, the Graduation Dance was conducted by Humphreys Dance School for all the Year 6 children. Once again, this was an outstanding event and the children demonstrated their dance skills extremely well and had an amazing evening of dance and fun. As the children have built up their dancing skills over the years, I was most impressed by them all. Some children were awarded dancing medallions on the night for their outstanding efforts on the dance floor. Dancing scholarships were also offered by Humphreys Dance School. Learning Community Citizenship Award. In conducting

these projects, they demonstrated their capacity to

help people in need ……whether it be in their family,

school, neighbourhood, city or overseas.

Their endeavours saw them: make collections for the homeless, remote

communities and for animals in need, raise money for charities and medical research, donate your time to aged care, initiate ways to improve the environment, And as simple as encouraging everyone to smile

a lot more …….and so many more. The project has enabled them to give to others and understand the true meaning of our school motto Give to Receive. They have certainly made a difference. Wattle Grove had three exceptional representatives in the final – Samara Bailye, Tegan Carter and Saxon Marrell with Samara winning the overall Darling Range Learning Community Citizenship Award. Congratulations and thank you to all the children in Year 6 for your amazing contribution.

The Ringing of the Bell Ceremony is a special ceremony held on the last day of the year to farewell our Year 6 children from Wattle Grove PS for the last time. All Year 6 students get to ‘ring the bell’ for their final time at primary school. Students and staff form long arches through which each of the Year 6 children pass as they bid them farewell. Year 6 parents are invited to attend at approximately 2.00pm for this ceremony on the last day of school.

TOUCH TYPING CHALLENGE Typing has received a greater focus in primary schools, with the NAPLAN Testing going online. Year 5 students are expected to type their stories in the Writing Test and those without good typing skills find it quite challenging to do. This year, teachers have set up Typing Club class accounts for students, using just first names to log in. Recently, we began a typing competition across the school for Year 3 – 6 students, with teachers setting up tests for each of the year levels. It was interesting that Nikki in Year 3 was the champion typer, across all year levels, with 54 words per minute. This has had a very positive outcome, especially with older students, who are now working very hard. Good typing skills are almost essential in many vocations these days and increasingly so in the future. Over the holidays, students could build their skills significantly, by spending a few minutes each day or a few days a week practising and come back to school to surprise all their friends and teachers. Class

teachers have set up a link for students to access the class account on their classroom blog. So I wonder who will be the Champion Typer at the first assembly in 2021 and how much faster than Nikki’s 54 words per minute will they be? CODING FUN This year, teachers have also been focussed on building coding skills with their students, as this is beginning to be an essential skill in many vocations and will become even more so, in the future. In the classes, I have been teaching each Wednesday, as well as, practising touch typing, the students have also been working on building their coding skills. Many teachers have set up class accounts for this, with a link on the class blog, as for touch typing. Their students have been working through courses of activities, by dragging small code blocks together and then running this, to see if their solution is successful. The activities are cartoon based, with characters programmed by the student to complete a task or tasks. Most students find it very engaging and a fun way to learn coding while building their skills and understandings. Some classes have also used Scratch, a similar style program, but allowing students to build their own projects. However, this needs an email address for students to set up an account. Parents might help students set up an account and be able to save their work. Coding can also be something students could do in the holidays, when it is too hot outside or there are not other things they could be doing. Best wishes for a happy festive season and holiday break.

vALUESvALUESvALUESvALUES The values we are focusing on in the last five weeks of term are Compassion and Caring. I am really pleased to say that I have noticed these values being demon-strated by many of our students here at Wattle Grove Primary School. Just a reminder about Sharing a Hills Christmas. We are still collecting donations for this worthy cause. The Wattle Grove Primary School Community has always been very generous in supporting this cause and this year is certainly a year where your donations are really needed. Thank you for showing compassion and caring by donating.

Compassion Compassion is having kind feelings towards someone who is hurt or troubled. It is caring deeply and wanting to help, even if you don’t know them. It is being kind and forgiving to someone who has hurt you.

Caring Caring is giving love and attention to people and things that matter to you. When you care about people, you help them. When you do a careful job, you give your very best effort. You treat people and things gently and respectfully.

The Kindergarten Blue groups from Room 1 and Room 4 presented at their very first assembly on the 26th of November. Christmas came early this year, as they entertained the audience with an Australian Christmas song “Aussie Jingle Bells”. They invited the audience to join them in the celebration of different cultures. We learnt that Diwali is the Indian celebration of the festival of lights and Chinese New Year is the celebration of the first day on the traditional Chinese calendar. The stage was filled with lots of colour and excitement. The children enjoyed sharing their knowledge of rhyming words by singing the “Rhyming Rap”. Congratulations to Finn Koprowicz and Noah Aguirre for receiving the Science Award and to Harper Reyes and Piper Elms for receiving the Values Award.

Children’s Week Book Project 2020

This year several classes participated in a statewide collaborative book project presented by Meerilinga Young Children's Foundation open to children aged 0-12 in Western Australia. The project invited WA children to connect, create and explore Children's Rights in a creative story made by children, for children. Three books were compiled by Fremantle based children's author Briony Stewart, 'Playing and Resting', 'When I Grow Up' and 'The Word for Home'. I am so proud to announce that from nearly 800 submissions, Wattle Grove PS had 19 students represented in all three books. The students will be awarded with their own copy of the book they are featured in and the school library and art room will receive their own copies of all three books for students to enjoy. Congratulations to all who participated in this fabulous collaboration and a super congratulations to the following students whose words or illustrations have been included in one of the books.
