From the Principal
Creative and Performing Arts Exhibition I would like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to all students and staff involved in the CAPA Exhibition held at school on Wednesday and Thursday. It was a wonderful showcase of our student’s work across the Visual Arts, further enhanced by some outstanding musical and dance performances on Wednesday evening.
Once again, the highlight of the exhibition was the variety of works being presented by students for this year’s Higher School Certificate. Works in media ranging from paintings to sketches, sculpture to film, all showcased the outstanding talent of our students and will no doubt impress the HSC markers over the next couple of weeks. In addition to these, the work presented by students from all Year groups also added significantly to the standard of the exhibition. It is without doubt that the Visual Arts is an extremely strong aspect of our curriculum at Manly Selective Campus.
I mentioned the performances on Wednesday evening; the variety here also left many of our guests amazed at the talent of our students. Piano and flute performances, our vocal ensembles and dancers all wowed the audience. To highlight this, in attendance was one of our Year 7 2016 parents who was so impressed by the evening that she came into the school on Thursday morning to personally congratulate us and offer her services as a volunteer for any of the dance and/or performance aspects of our curriculum enrichment program.
A special congratulations to all of the staff who supported our students in preparing for this wonderful showcase including Ms Blundell, Ms Tye, Ms Richards, Ms Howard and Ms Leviton.
Robotics Club Venture into New Competition A total of 47 secondary school teams participated in the Robocup Junior Challenge at the UNSW on Thursday. Following the formation of our Robotics club, this was our student’s initial foray into the RoboCup competition having successfully competed in the First League Lego competition last year.
The two teams that were entered from the Manly Selective Campus Robotics Club competed strongly, coming 8th and 9th overall. In one of the rounds entered by our students they achieved a perfect score which was very rewarding in itself. Thanks must go to Mr Peter Dawes for supervising on the day and to our Robotics Club mentor, Mr Carlo Manfredini, for his guidance and enthusiasm.
Students representing our school included Lachlan Vu, Alex O'Neill, Kashi Saunders, Elden Loomes, Alex Glanville, Riley Dean, Evan Foo, Kane Jackson and Luke Nelson. Congratulations to each.
Debating Team Success Our Year 9/10 debaters had success in the regional rounds of the Premier’s Debating Competition on Monday. Our team was successful over Willoughby Girls High School and now move in to the Regional Finals stage of the competition.
In other debating news, we were recently informed that our opponent in the Final of the Year 11 competition will be Sydney Girls High. This debate will be held at the University of Western Sydney Parramatta Campus on Friday 4 September.
We wish all of our debating teams well as they progress through their various competitions. Pinestock Another astonishing Pinestock event has been run by our Student Representative Council, this year with the theme Spacestock. Between recess and lunchtime today we had students and staff dressed in all manner of ‘space’ outfits, listening to the musical talents of our students and enjoying the activity and food stalls organised by members of the SRC.
This ‘festival’ is a real highlight of our school each year giving the students the opportunity to support each other and have a ‘fun’ day at school where all students can interact freely and work together to build school harmony and spirit. Once again, our SRC have done this to perfection.

From the Deputy Principals Individual Yearly Examination timetables have been given to all Year 11 students and the complete timetable has been uploaded to the school website.
With only one more week of classes before these final Preliminary assessments, students are encouraged to refer to the notifications provided for all examinations and ensure they have a study timetable organised to assist them to achieve their personal best for all subjects.
All students are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the SRC members for 2016. Congratulations to all students who nominated and presented to their year group for these worthwhile positions.

A huge thank you is extended to Mr Jamie Kay who completed the role of Deputy Principal while I spoke at the World Council for Gifted & Talented Children Conference in Odense, Denmark over the last couple of weeks.
I presented a small part of one chapter of my doctoral thesis on virtual education possibilities for gifted students. The conference had delegates from over 50 countries with a highlight being the team from Ireland who presented on their work from the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland which operates out of Dublin University. Along with senior academics they brought a team of young Masters/Doctorate students who each presented part of their work in the break‐out sessions. To see such incredibly capable people take to the world academic stage with such confidence was a delight.
Year 8 is to be congratulated for all submitting their subject selection forms within the due date. This augurs well for their future studies as these common due dates are required for the rest of the timetabling process that occurs with preferences.
Year 10 this week are readying themselves for a big assessment week next week. Parents are encouraged to make a favourite meal and be understanding if these students appear less chatty than usual.
Year 12 have completed their Trials Examinations and have now received their marks back. Whilst some have been disappointed, others have been delighted. In all cases it needs to be remembered there is quite some time between now and the actual HSC examinations so much can change in that time. It is not unusual for those achieving in the 70‐80% range to lift that by 10% between now and the HSC with the application of some effort and support from others in the year group. We will be internally collaborative and externally competitive was the mantra at my previous schools and this has worked well once Trials have been completed.

Tell Them from Me Parent Survey Over the last two weeks of this term, all parents of students at the Manly Selective Campus will have the opportunity to complete the Tell Them from Me Parent Survey. These questions are designed to examine a variety of aspects of our school that will enhance our learning environment and build stronger ties within our school community.
The survey involves a variety of multiple choice and short answer questions allowing parents to have their say on the education of their children. These include areas such as:
communication between the school and parents
student homework levels
support methods for student learning
student wellbeing
strengths of the school
what parents would like to see more of at the school
This information will be gathered for analysis by the school during Term 4 2015, with the results used to enhance the learning environment for your child.
In the coming week, an email will be sent to parents notifying them of how to log in and access the survey as well as the closing date of the survey window. All data gathered will be anonymous and information will be kept for the sole use of our school.
We thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey and look forward to implementing the feedback provided to continue providing the best educational environment for your child.
P&C Firstly: A big thank you for all the support for the Art 61 event held last week. The list is long, as always, but I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the artists, the supporters, the teaching and office staff at the school, the attendees on Friday night, caterers, helpers and local businesses that have kindly sponsored the event.
Above all we must thank the team that was the driving force behind the whole event, working for many months in advance to make this happen. Their contribution to the Manly community is
hugely appreciated – thank you Maria Romeo, Sue Lumb, Kim Kelly, Karen Willetts and Sharon Porter.
Secondly: The upcoming P&C meeting is on next Wednesday (that’s the 2nd September) at 7pm in the Library. Aside from the regular items such as the update from the school executive on key items of interest in the school and other committee reports, we will be discussing next year’s budget and where we intend to focus our efforts and spending in the coming year. If you have any particular suggestions or would just like to learn more about how and where your P&C contributions and funds are spent, then please come along or contact a committee member (http://manlypandc.org.au/?page_id=7)
Finally: There are always roles available in the P&C management committee if you would like the opportunity to become more involved in the school community. No matter what capacity you might have to get involved, every contribution is much appreciated. This can range from simply attending the meeting twice a term and helping with discussions and decision making, to helping on individual projects or tasks to taking on a more substantive role on the committee. I am sure you will find, like the rest of us, that being more closely involved with your kids’ experiences at school and having a part in this great community is very rewarding for you and your family.
We are keen to encourage new participants, bringing fresh ideas and ensuring that we have as broad a representation across the school years as possible. So this is particularly a call out to parents and carers in the younger years at the school, as time has a way of “ageing” the membership (if I can put it that way without being impolite about it!). Why not join us next Wednesday and get a bit of an insight into how we can all help make Manly a great place for our kids to spend their school years.

What a great event! The Art61 Winter Soiree last Friday was an outstanding success. With the music of the MSC Jazz Combo playing in the background, over 100 attendees socialised and enjoyed some fabulous food while viewing the outstanding art showcase in our hall. Our guest auctioneer – Elliott Shoebridge of Cunninghams Property – did a superb job prising out the bidders with the live auction items resulting in some ferocious competition and, ultimately, thrilled recipients of amazing artworks. Meanwhile the anonymous artworks and silent auction items were heavily contested. All in all, a great night which resulted in over $10,000 being raised towards the refurbishment of the MSC hall – a project that will have a significant impact on our entire school community. If you know of a student that has such life experience, skills and qualifications that would make a positive contribution to the work of the NSW Youth Advisory Council, please encourage them to apply. The NSW Youth Advisory Council plays an important role in guiding NSW Government youth affairs. The Council meets regularly throughout the year to discuss a range of relevant topics, as well as monitoring and evaluating youth‐related policies and legislation which affect young people. The functions of the Council include: Advise the Minister and the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) on the planning, development, integration and implementation of government policies and programs concerning young people.
Consult with young people, community groups and government agencies on issues and policies concerning young people.
Monitor and evaluate legislation and government policies and programs concerning young people and recommend changes if required.
Conduct forums, approved by the Minister, on issues of interest to young people.
Collect, analyse and provide the Minister and the Advocate of Children and Young People with information on issues and policies concerning young people.
The 12 member Council is made up of young people between the ages of 12 and 24, from all over the State and will be broadly representative of the diversity of young people living in NSW. The class will be suitable for girls & boys of all ages. Fencing teaches agility, coordination, speed and develops team work and self‐confidence, which are skills that can be transferred to any sport. Fencing is the physical games of chess.
Classes at MSC will introduce the weapon Sabre, through games, drills, footwork and fighting.

Bands of Manly Selective Campus
Wind Ensemble at Conservatorium of Music On Monday 25 August, WE played a concert with the Conservatorium High School Wind Sinfonia at the beautiful Verbrugghen Hall. The concert is an annual event to give intermediate band students an opportunity to play in a serious music venue. Both ensembles were wonderful, with a particularly rousing combined item at the end. Music in our public schools is alive, well and thriving!!
