School Fete
Thank you for supporting ourFete on the 14th. The finalfinancial tally is still to beannounced but from a socialpoint of view, the fete was agreat success. It was wonderfulto see so many families enjoyingtheir Friday night together. I’m
sure you were able to catch up with friends while the childrenenjoyed the activities. Thank you too to those in the audiencefor persisting when we encountered some frustrating soundproblems. Thankfully our young performers are confident andensured “the show must go on!”
To all those who helped out, cooking, preparing, serving, setting up, cleaning up and packing away, we greatlyappreciated your assistance. We’re gathering feedback to helpimprove the next fete in 2018. You’re welcome to email anyideas to [email protected]
Pupil Free Day
On the Pupil Free day staff participated in a variety ofprofessional development activities and spent time reviewingthe results of the August, School Opinion Survey. The surveyseeks to gather information from Parents, Students and Staff. Some of the key results are:
Highest number of student and staff responses in the last5 years, and second highest response rate from parents(just 3 fewer).
Overall, considering all three groups, responses were morepositive this year than last.
Parent responses showed higher levels of satisfaction than2015 on 60% of items and were equivalent to the averageresponse rate for Queensland schools
Student responses were higher on 71% of items and overall, student levels of satisfaction are similar to the state average.
Staff indicated a higher level of satisfaction than 2015 in 81%of 42 items and for the additional 18 teacher only items, 100%better. This result also tracks favourably against the sateaverages.
While there is lots of good news in the results in terms ofour improvement against last year and in comparison to stateaverages that we tend to use as benchmarks, we haveidentified some places where we can improve further. All threegroups surveyed, identify the management of studentbehaviour as important to improve. For parents, how well wekeep you informed and how often we seek your input isimportant. The School Opinion Survey results will help informour planning for 2017.
School Uniform
Our students are proud of their school uniform and almosteveryone wears it completely and every day. We appreciatewhat it takes to get multiple uniforms washed and ready forschool and keep the sizes up to date as children grow – someat exponential rates. Thankyou. A couple of reminders though:
A hat is a necessary part of the school uniform. With it, children can access all areas of the playground.Without it, children are restricted to the undercover playareas. Very few children without a hat stay exclusivelyundercover and move between the tuckshop, eatingarea, toilets and then to class line up areas. If caughtrunning or chasing in these areas they are sat out of play.
Jewellery can be hazardous for children at schooland is not permitted, except for the wearing of studs orsleeper earrings, a watch or the gold silver bronze, AA orAAA wristbands. Please remind your children to removeany jewellery they wear on the weekend.

Smashed in the face bySponges- what a lovelyexperience!
Yes, Friday night saw Mr L’Orange and I putour heads on the line (literally) facing
students, x-students, family members and even the occasional(not mentioning any names Mr President) P&C member armedwith soaked sponges and a deadly aim. It was a pleasure to beinvolved!
To see current and past students with their families beingentertained and having fun, participating in activities orperforming on stage, enjoying the carnival rides or rummagingthrough the trash and treasure with smiles on their facesabsolutely confirms that the Fete was a success. It istremendous to see so many families at school enjoyingthemselves and it is a credit to everyone who contributed to thesuccess of the evening.
I would like to extend a massive thanks to the P&C, Mr Perkinsour Principal, all of our staff (teachers, teacher aides, David ourgroundsman, our tuckshop personnel) and the large number ofvolunteers who assisted in set-up, manning the stalls, pack-upand the large number of jobs leading up to, during and followingthe evening’s events.
It certainly proves one thing, together we can achieve greatthings! Well done and thanks to everyone in our community. Ihope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Regards,Mr Forsyth-Stewart
Master Teacher News
Ms Leoni Robinson, Master Teacher
Having had a number of conversations thisweek about attitudes towards maths, Iwould like to share some thoughts with you.How often have you heard people, youngand old, say that they are hopeless atmaths or that they don’t have a mathsbrain? Many times I imagine but now think
about how many times you have heard people talk loudly andproudly when they can’t read? It seems quite sociallyacceptable to tell people that you can’t do maths but not aboutreading or writing, as if maths is not that important as a life skill. The truth is quite the opposite! How often would you go througha day without counting money or calculating your change orsavings? How often do you use your maths skills to work outhow much mulch you need for your garden or flooring for yourchildren’s room, how much half a kilo of meat or veggies cost orhow many pizzas you need to feed everyone at the table. Evencomputer crazes like Bejewelled and Candy Crush use mathspatterning and problem solving. Maths is everywhere andeveryone is doing it all of the time. So… are you good at maths? And… Do you want your child to be good at maths?
The answer to last week’s teaser:
The Bat and the ball cost $1.10 altogether. The Bat cost a $1more than the ball so the ball cost 5c. How did you go?

News from the Library:
Another week, another book!
Junior Fiction Face Lift
Over the next week or two make sure youtake the time to visit the Library and see thetransformation. Many thanks to the P&C, forthe purchase of the new shelving to helpbrighten our Library.
Care for books:
Common sense: have clean hands while reading. Keep thebook on a firm flat surface, and use a book mark. If the bookneeds a repair please let us know. We will repair it.
Library bags: lining your bag with plastic is ideal, but a simplegrocery bag kept inside the Library bag works just as well. Itis the wet season and we are aware water bottles leak; thispractice will keep the books dry.
See you soon in the Library.
Happy Reading!Miss Reichardt and Mrs Curcuruto

Year 2
The fete was approaching and the excitement was growingand a pizza party was in sight. The bottles began to come in,first in 2s, then lots of 5s and 10s. Confirmation came that MrAllen's class had received approximately 90 softdrink bottlesby one child so the game was on. Competition was enoughto motivate students and parents in 2C. One parent used herinitiative and headed to Facebook asking for donations. After aquick collection she headed to the shops to buy another 184bottles of softdrink. This sum was added to the already 120+bottles generously donated by our families already. With a finalfew bottles donated on the last day we achieved 387 bottles, perhaps even a couple more. Needless to say, the kids weremore than excited when I told them we had won the pizza party.Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you for yourkind donations. Thank you to all the parents who helped set upand work in our hoop toss stall on the night, the stall was verysuccessful.
Warm regardsMrs Bryant

The case of the stingless bees!
Have you heard of native stingless bees? Well I am studyingthem and found out a lot of amazing things. Some may ask‘What’s so important about native bees?’ Bees are responsiblefor pollinating 70% of Australian crops and flowers. CharlesDarwin was studying native bees, and he once said ‘A man’slife without the bee would be extremely difficult.’ I have foundout in my studies so far how to build a native bee box andto coach them to go in there, I also learnt how as they arethe smallest (5mm to 10mm) and they can do a lot of things. You may eat honey bees honey but native bee’s honey is a lotdifferent and much harder to get, as they are only small anddon’t carry much. If you do want to collect honey from themthey may bite you (which is harmless) but they have no sting. Ihope you are interested and want to know more.
