Bateman Primary School, Bartling Crescent, Bateman WA 6150 T: 6258 6900 E: [email protected] www.batemanps.wa.edu.au From the Principal It was lovely to spend last Thursday evening with so many Bateman families as we went along to the Perth Concert Hall to celebrate the performance and all of the work that had gone into our excellent Wakikirri story of Garbage Island and its impact on marine wildlife. Our dancing was excellent, our costumes followed the brief of being recyclable, our story was told clearly and our speakers a$er the performance were outstanding. We accept the judge’s decision that we won’t join the only two private schools that move forward from our heat, one of which was outstanding, and embrace how much fun we had and what a great experience it was to perform at the Concert Hall. Thank You to all students, parents and staff who played a role in such a fantas)c adventure and I look forward to our 2020 effort. Thank You to all the families who responded to the School Board’s survey about the direc)on they wanted to see the school moving in upcoming years. We analysed the data at last week’s Board mee)ng and tonight our sub-commi.ee will meet to begin transla)ng the data into our Business Plan 2020 – 2022. Some of the big things that came through strongly were – that the community fully supported the idea of developing the “Whole Child” people saw value in and appreciated the lunch)me clubs we should con)nue with the excellent work already done to improve our grounds and buildings and look at ways of enclosing the Undercover Area (very expensive). To address a couple of issues which came up and show that we haven’t communicated as clearly as we should – Not all the services provided by outside agencies are operated by parents. On the website there are 5 local providers for each service and several groups already come onto school grounds and work with students. We definitely do not have high class numbers but we are trying to fill our classes to the recommended sizes to increase our funding for resources for our students. We are unable to endorse or recommend individual tutors to parents should they wish to engage them for their child. One of the major issues was whether to con)nue to grow or to limit the growth of the school. Almost exactly two thirds of the respondents wanted us to preserve current levels because they liked the “small school” feel and the fact that staff knew all of our students. The other one third wished to see the school con)nue to grow to provide further resourcing for programs or to somehow eliminate split year-level classes. Yesterday all of our Year 4 students sat the PEAC tes)ng and the top 1.5% of students from across the state will be offered courses in Year 5 and 6. From the Principal It was lovely to spend last Thursday evening with so many Bateman families as we

went along to the Perth Concert Hall to celebrate the performance and all of the

work that had gone into our excellent Wakikirri story of Garbage Island and its

impact on marine wildlife. Our dancing was excellent, our costumes followed the

brief of being recyclable, our story was told clearly and our speakers a$er the

performance were outstanding. We accept the judge’s decision that we won’t join

the only two private schools that move forward from our heat, one of which was

outstanding, and embrace how much fun we had and what a great experience it was

to perform at the Concert Hall. Thank You to all students, parents and staff who

played a role in such a fantas)c adventure and I look forward to our 2020 effort.

Thank You to all the families who responded to the School Board’s survey about the

direc)on they wanted to see the school moving in upcoming years. We analysed the

data at last week’s Board mee)ng and tonight our sub-commi.ee will meet to begin

transla)ng the data into our Business Plan 2020 – 2022. Some of the big things that

came through strongly were –

• that the community fully supported the idea of developing the “Whole Child”

• people saw value in and appreciated the lunch)me clubs

• we should con)nue with the excellent work already done to improve our grounds

and buildings and look at ways of enclosing the Undercover Area (very expensive).

To address a couple of issues which came up and show that we haven’t

communicated as clearly as we should –

• Not all the services provided by outside agencies are operated by parents. On the

website there are 5 local providers for each service and several groups already

come onto school grounds and work with students.

• We definitely do not have high class numbers but we are trying to fill our classes

to the recommended sizes to increase our funding for resources for our students.

• We are unable to endorse or recommend individual tutors to parents should they

wish to engage them for their child.

One of the major issues was whether to con)nue to grow or to limit the growth of

the school. Almost exactly two thirds of the respondents wanted us to preserve

current levels because they liked the “small school” feel and the fact that staff knew

all of our students. The other one third wished to see the school con)nue to grow to

provide further resourcing for programs or to somehow eliminate split year-level

classes.

Yesterday all of our Year 4 students sat the PEAC tes)ng and the top 1.5% of students

from across the state will be offered courses in Year 5 and 6. Le.ers will be issued to

successful students later in the year.

On Monday we had the first of our iden)fied Year 2 students begin their MiniLit

course a$er 6 of our Year 1 students reached the recommended exit level. Those

students are to be congratulated on working so well to improve their reading fluency

from around 10 words per minute at the start of the year to at least the minimum

MiniLit is a great reading recovery program when administered by excellent staff and an invaluable investment in

our children’s futures.

A reminder about our busy Week 5 for you all. It is Book Fair Week with displays and sales in the library on

Monday and Tuesday and a short dress-up parade on Wednesday morning around the topic “Reading is my Super

Power”. Tuesday a$ernoon also sees Room 5,6, 7 and 8 open for any parent who wishes to drop in and see what

we are u)lizing the iPads for in our teaching program and on Friday staff will hopefully be reviewing NAPLAN data

while the school is closed to students. If NAPLAN data isn’t yet available we will be star)ng work on developing a

Reconcilia)on Ac)on Plan around the Aboriginal Cultural Framework, reviewing our policies and prac)ces and

coordina)ng our plans for the remainder of 2019 and the upcoming 50th

Anniversary celebra)ons in 2020.

I am very excited about the artwork installa)ons that will soon be highlights along our Bush Tucker Track. The

work that your P&C is doing in partnership with the school is allowing us to develop exci)ng educa)onal areas in

our grounds and is all part of our prepara)on for our school’s 50th

Anniversary next year. You may have also

no)ced that over the weekend, Mike Baldwin and his team magically turned the junior teaching block a lovely blue

to match the senior block. We have a great community!

Just a reminder, next week is our Book Week and Book Fair!

We will be having the Scholas)c Book Fair on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Apart from new books for sale,

there will also be posters, novel)es, bargain packs and more. This is a big fundraiser for the school library.

Each class has a scheduled )me to visit the fair and make purchases if they have bought money (see below for

schedule). The Book Fair will be open from 8.30am (Mon, Tues, Wed) and a$er school un)l 3.00pm (Mon, Tues

only) to give parents the opportunity to purchase. Students are welcome to visit the Book Fair before and a$er

school, but they must be accompanied by a parent.

BOOK FAIR CLASS SCHEDULE

MONDAY: Rooms 12, 8, 5, 6, 3 & 11

TUESDAY: Rooms EC1, 7, 10, 4 & 9

WEDNESDAY: Rooms EC2 & EC3

Book Week DRESS UP DAY will be on WEDNESDAY 21 August.

A short assembly/parade will be held in the morning for children to show their costumes.

Two requests from EC1 Pre-Primary class please:

1. Do you have any pre-loved, used, no longer wanted, small plas)c or metal dinky cars you can donate to EC1?

2. Is there a parent or grandparent who may be able to help out repairing a couple of broken prams in ECE

(must be handy, as they are very bent out of shape!). If you can assist, please see Mrs Donna Bradshaw.

Thank you.

Pre-Primary Dona'ons and Help Please!

On Thursday 8 August, 32 Bateman students from Years 4-6 travelled to

the Perth Concert Hall to par)cipate in the Wakakirri Story Dance

Contest. The compe))on was extremely strong and the students did an

amazing job represen)ng our school community with their item, Garbage

Island. Our students won awards for “Best Re-use of Materials for

Costumes” and “Best Minimal Use of Sets, Props and Costumes”, and our

student speakers Ryan, Amelie and Sean presented our item beau)fully.

A huge thank you to all the parents, friends and community members

who helped us bring our produc)on to life. We couldn’t have done it

without you! Also a massive thanks to Miss B, Miss Parry and Miss Bray

for all your help and support throughout this process.

Bring on 2020!

Judge’s comments:

“A creave story that was well

rehearsed and whose narrave

was easy to understand. I loved

your “plasc” characters. Your

soundtrack enhanced the telling of your story, as did your props, staging

and costuming.”

Envision Hands

This is a wonderful project which uses recycled plas)c

bo.le caps to produce prosthe)c hands and arms for kids

in need. Bateman Primary School will be ac)ng as a

collec)on point for our school and the wider Bateman

community. Star)ng from next week, look out for

collec)on buckets in each of the wet areas and the front

office.

Please note, Envision can only use bo<le caps with a

grade 2 or 4 plas'c. So, any with a ‘2’ or ‘4’ on the actual

cap (not the bo<le) will be fine. The number must be

stand alone, not within a code. This will generally include

so$ drink, water and milk bo.le caps. To see if the cap is

usable, you can look at the numbers located on the

underside of the cap. Any caps without numbers will be

unusable as we have no way of knowing what grade plas)c

they are. We also ask that the caps are rinsed please,

before they are donated and that no extra plas)c, metal or

other material is a.ached. We also cannot accept any

larger lids, such as those found on Vegemite or peanut

bu.er jars as they are too difficult to process.

For more informa)on, check out their FB page:

h.ps://www.facebook.com/EnvisionESI/

Let’s see how many bo.le caps we can keep out of landfill!

Mulching Sta'on for the Kitchen Garden - we need you!

A huge thanks to the fantas)c families that donated pallets for our mulching sta)on. We are hoping there is

someone handy in the school community that can turn this:

Bush Tucker-Indigenous Educa'on Reserve - we are underway!

You may have no)ced the large pile of mulch (thanks Glenn) by the kitchen garden and we are geUng very excited

about making the nature reserve a useful and a.rac)ve part of the school for both now and the future.

There will be a bush tucker busy bee early in term 4 on a Friday a$er school to mulch the bush tucker path, cement

in the beau)ful laser cut metal sculptures with the Aboriginal seasons on them and artworks donated by the City of

Melville (pictures below), and have the students and school community plant bush tucker plants. Addi)onally, we

are looking to have a BBQ on the night as a thanks for your involvement with a talk from an Aboriginal Elder on the

dream)me, bush tracking or other suitable area for the students (and adults). Details will be forthcoming.

If you have any ideas, talents or would like to be involved (we are currently looking for an ar)st, draughtsperson or

architect to draw some very informal plans if you can volunteer your )me) please contact our friendly Grounds &

Facili)es team of Ali, Brian, Bruce, Casey, Tania or Mike. We can be reached through the P&C email

New “BPS 50th

Anniversary Mural” on the Library

A huge thanks to Andrew Grero for pain)ng our amazing 50th

anniversary mural to

complete the regenera)on of the outside aesthe)c of the library. The P&C 50th

anniversary commi.ee will use the tree leaves as an area that students, teachers,

staff, and alumni can purchase a leaf (with message for the school) and this will be

pasted onto the tree to record being part of the BPS community and our rich

history of 50 years. Details to come.

Skate for Nate – Thank You Bateman

“Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu” - “I am what I am, because of who

we all are”.

This ancient African phrase loosely means that we are, who we are,

because of the people around us.

With this in mind, I would like to thank everyone who supported

Skate 4 Nate. To all those who joined us on the night, donated and

sponsored prizes your contribu)on has made a long-las)ng impact to

Nate. We managed to raise over $3,000.00. Incredible!

A Message from Kelly Fearnall:

“Thank you so much to everyone who came out for the Skate 4 Nate event. We

are so incredibly grateful for the support Nate, and we as a family, receive from

our community.

All funds raised have been put towards Nate's next intensive therapy, 6-week

block, which was started on Monday the 12/8.

A very special thanks to the Bateman Primary School P and C for choosing Nate

to be the first recipient in your give back iniave, and of course to the

wonderful organisers (Natalie, Nadia, Melissa and Louise) who organised an

absolutely brilliant night for everyone. Here is a picture of Nate on day 1 of his

6-week block.

Thanks so much”

The Fearnall Family.

Music Quiz Night - Friday 13 September

Our family-friendly music quiz night will be held on Friday, 13 September. At this stage, we are looking for an

amazing MC - someone that can really engage with the audience. Addi)onally, we are looking for prize dona)ons

and sponsors. This is a great way to build your network and enjoy a bit of extra adver)sing.

If you are our person or know of anyone who would like to put their hand up, please email either Nadia Kidgell

[email protected] or Natalie Walchshofer [email protected].

Spellathon 2019 - Friday 13 September

Our famous annual Spellathon will be held this term on Friday 13 September

2019. As always, there will be a variety of great prizes to be won, including the

chance to win an iPad (perfect for our BYOD program). Every child who raises $10 goes into the draw to win an

iPad (ie $100 earns you 10 chances to win), so the more money you raise, the more entries you’ll receive.

For each class, there will be prizes for the ‘Top Fundraiser’, the ‘Most Improved Spelling Student’ (nominated by

their class teacher) and a ‘Lucky Draw Prize’ for par)cipa)ng students. We are also having a draw for the people

sponsoring the children - everyone who sponsors will go in the draw to win a 2019/20 Entertainment Book.

Sponsorship forms will be coming home shortly. These forms and monies must be returned by Week 10, Thursday

26 September to be eligible for the prizes. Winners will be drawn in Term 4 Week 1, Friday 18 October at the

Spellathon Assembly.

All funds raised will go towards the school ‘Bush Tucker-Indigenous Educa'on Reserve’ with 6 individual laser cut

design sculpture panels (2400 h x 1100 w) highligh)ng the six aboriginal seasons (look for photos in the Grounds

Report). These panels will be a stunning visual and educa)onal addi)on to the reserve, as well as tying in with

school indigenous programs - the 2019 Interna)onal Year of Indigenous Languages.
