Improvement, innovation and change:
The school has been researching multiple options for resurfacing our basketball court.
We are pleased to advise the community that the surface is to be covered in an AstroTurf
style of material that will allow for a smooth court surface and remove all the cracks
currently effecting the playing surface. We are also refurnishing our computer lab with all
new furniture and devices.
Quality Teaching: backward mapping:
Teachers are continuing to work on ‘backward mapping’ as a focus for their professional
development. This is a process of starting our planning with the end product or syllabus
outcome in mind. We then map out a sequence of learning that answers the following
questions:
1. Where do students need to be? (The curriculum outcome)
2. Where are the students at currently? (A current assessment: Assessment For
Learning)
3. How will students get there? (What do I need to teach for students to be able to
demonstrate the outcome?)
Whilst our teaching staff work in this process regularly, it is vital that we revisit the
benefits of ensuring that we are focused on where we want students to arrive at the
completion of their units of work.

Every student is known and cared for:
I have recently consulted senior Departmental personnel including Mr Matt Hobbs, Director Educational
Leadership around supporting the school in increasing student attendance. An Attendance Strategy
Review is currently underway and I seek community support in increasing student attendance. The
school currently has varying approaches to support student attendance, and will be detailing multiple
options with staff, parents, students and community groups to build our capacity to ensure that our
school is a safe and welcoming environment that is conducive to learning. We are looking closely at the
procedures that we use to monitor and feedback attendance data to all stakeholders and what ‘blockers’
to attending school exist for our students that are attending school below the state average of 93%.
If you would like to participate in supporting this process, please completed the following and return to
the school ASAP. If you would like to meet and discuss ways for us to increase attendance, please contact
the office to arrange an appointment.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Notification for Parents and Carers
All Government and non-Government schools across Australia are required to participate annually in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD).
All Australian schools will collate data on their students who are receiving adjustments to meet additional learning and support needs, in accordance with their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Disability Standards for Education 2005. This data will be provided to the Australian Government to assist in the development of a consistent, national picture of the education needs of students with disability. The data must not explicitly identify any student. General information about the national data collection can be found on the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (AGDET) website at https://www.education.gov.au/what-nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
Privacy Protection
The NSW Department of Education follows the requirements of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002. Schools collect, record, store and use data about individual students in line with these requirements. Data security and protection is a priority and students’ personal details will be kept confidential.
Clause 52 of the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (Cth) identifies the data NSW Department of Education must provide to AGDET for the NCCD. It includes the number of students at each year of schooling, the number in each category of disability and the number at each level of adjustment. The information is provided as a series of number sets that must not explicitly identify a student.
The AGDET follows the requirements of the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988 when handling any data provided in connection with the NCCD. A public information notice providing students, parents and carers with important privacy information about the data collection is available on the AGDET website
If you have any questions about the data collection please do not hesitate to contact the Ashford Central School Principal, Mr Delanty on (02) 6725 4101.

Students in K/1 have been participating in a range of engagement rich classroom activities. One activity that students participated in was a STEM activity where they used toothpicks and marshmallows to design and build a castle. Students had to think about the size of their marshmallows so that their structure was sturdy.
Students in K/1 enjoy sharing in reading with each other. There are many opportunities in the K/1 classroom for students to enjoy their love of reading.

During term two Year 2/3 students will explore an
integrated learning unit including lessons which are
designed to introduce the concept of ‘home’ and
‘connection to place’. The unit of work introduces
concepts which are intended to be built upon. The
series of lessons uses Indigenous artists and their
artworks in the context of the human physical and
spiritual connection to geographical space.
Year 2/3 Visual Arts Term 2
Students read ‘The Rainbow Serpent’ and discussed the meaning of
the dreamtime story, which recognised the connection to creation.
The Rainbow Serpent dreaming in Aboriginal society represents one
of the great and powerful forces of nature and spirit. Connected to
water, the Rainbow Serpent is the great life giver, and protector of
water, which is his spiritual home.
