1 From the Principal So many things have taken place in the past few weeks and the staff are to be commended for the time they put in to ensure that students are supported to access extracurricular activities. The Year 10 formal was a wonderful event. The students who attended were fantastic, they supported each other and ensured it was an inclusive event. With 100 students and six staff, it was a great evening at Heidelberg Golf Club. Thanks to Richard Oldfield and Barbara Chiodo who worked with the formal committee to ensure the night was a success. A number of the SRC team and College Captains represented the college at the Diamond Creek Town Fair. They manned a stall all day, promoting the many opportunities available at the college. Thanks to Mel Boulton, Barbara Chiodo and Justin Matt for supporting this. Our Tournament of Minds team was outstanding. As Northern Regional winners in their first attempt they competed in the state final last weekend. Some of the teams had been in the state final a number of times and therefore benefitted from experience. They are determined to do better next year. Thanks to Eva Dean for committing many hours to ensure that the team were prepared for the challenge of each event. Also to Andrew Budisa and Bridget Hiho for their support. The debating team have been supported by Alex Connor, drawing on her vast experience. They have a great deal to learn, debating against very experienced teams but they are committed to improving with each week. Our World Challenge team is working hard to prepare for their challenge in late November. Bridget Hiho and Ben Strickland supervised an overnight hike in freezing conditions. The hike although difficult, meant that team work, collaboration and communication were vital for success. The Space Camp has left for Huntsville, Alabama and then Orlando, Florida for an amazing educational experience with Graham Sinclair, and the City Experience has been planned for the Year 9 students by Alex Connor and Gary Nicholls. It was a pleasure to visit our team at the Gnurad Gundidj campus of the School for Student Leadership in the western districts. They, along with seven other schools, confidently presented the Community Learning Project and I look forward to them completing their project in term four. It was also great to see Oscar and Jacob perform at the presentation on Friday. It has been a busy term and I want to take the opportunity to thank the staff for their support of our students, within the classroom and beyond. Enjoy the holidays and I look forward to seeing you in term 4! YEAR 10 FORMAL

The Year 10 Formal was held on Friday September 8 at the Heidelberg Golf Club in Lower Plenty. The evening was well attended by our Year 10 students and provided a great opportunity for students to enjoy each others company and unite as a year level. The dance floor was filled with every student up and out of their seats by the end of the night with many great dance moves being shown and ballads being sung. It was certainly rewarding seeing the students dressed formally and enjoying themselves on the night. A special thank you to the work of Caiden Robertson, Kara Pilati and Paris Fitzpatrick for assisting with the organisation of the awards and for being MC’s on the night. Thank you to the staff for attending and to Richard Oldfield and Barbara Chiodo for their organisation of the night. Rebecca Taylor Acting Senior Sub-School Leader

On the back of the success of last year’s Toastmasters we are excited to be able to offer the course again this year. Toastmasters is an international public speaking organization, run by volunteers. They teach a range of public speaking skills, from formal presentations to comic routines; breaking down people’s nerves around the task of speaking in public. They nurture a supportive environment in which students from Year 7 through to Year 11 can work on and improve their ability and confidence in public speaking. This year some of last year’s students will return to offer their advice and support. The course will run on Tuesday evenings in term four: Tuesday 10 October 6.30pm – 8.30 Tuesday 17 October 6.30pm – 8.30 Tuesday 24 October 6.30pm – 8.30 Tuesday 31 October 6.30pm – 8.30 Tuesday 14 November 6.30pm – 8.30 Tuesday 21 November 6.30pm – 8.30 The cost is $30 per student which covers the course handbook. As the evening starts at 6.30pm students can leave the school at the end of the school day and return at 6.15pm. We ask that all students are picked up from the college at 8.30pm. To book a place in the course students will need to download a form from COMPASS and return it to the general office by Thursday 14 September, 2017. The $30 fee will then be added to the student’s COMPASS account, and payment will be due by Thursday 21 September, 2017.

THE ARTS AT DVC

Music, Art & Design, Drama

After the success of our school production Sweeny Todd, we are heading into another busy time preparing for the Art and Technology exhibition and awards night. This is a celebration of the work done by our creative students in both the Arts and Technology learning areas. Staff have been collecting work mounted up by the students for most of the year. The Art building is being stripped of past work and new examples of paintings, printmaking, digital art and visual communication designs are starting to be put up. The Year 10 Visual Communication Design class have been working on the design of our promotional poster. Next term we will have a hub of activity as staff and students set up ceramics, sculptures, textiles, wood and visuals of work by foods students. The opening night is on Tuesday October 17 from 4pm – 7pm in the “S” wing. The Awards will be presented at 6.30pm. This will be a great opportunity to see examples of VCE work and the folios that document the students’ creative processes. There will be musical performances and awards for practical excellence presented on the night. Staff in the Arts Domain regularly take on the supervision of student teachers, providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills as a teacher. This month we have the pleasure of a past DVC student, Ashleigh Brett joining us in the Art department for a 4 week placement as part of her teacher training. Ashleigh has stepped in to teach the Year 10 Art class traditional silkscreen printing and how to write an art analysis on an Andy Warhol Pop Art artwork. She is also taking the Year 9 Art class through the design process to explore a range of watercolour media, and guiding the Year 8’s to finish their lino prints. Ashleigh will return for two days next term to follow through with the Year 9’s as they are on city campus this week. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Ashleigh well in completing her course and obtaining employment as an Art teacher. Jo Poulter Arts Domain Co-ordinator

YEAR 9 ITALIAN EXCRURSION ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 11 The excursion started off with catching the train at Diamond Creek station and getting off at Melbourne Central. We all followed Rose and Guido to Lygon Street Carlton. We had a wonderful opportunity to eat Italian cannoli at Brunetti organized by Rosa. They were yummy. We then went to the Victoria Market to look at the Italian food and see what we would cook for our Italian meals. We then went to eat a scrumptious lunch which consisted of an traditional Italian pizza. The excursion was really fun, worth while, and it was interesting to try Italian foods and to learn about the different culture. It was enjoyable participating in different activities. It was an awesome day. By Tara Robertson, Elise Reuter, Sophie Lodi, Jordan Henderson

These past two weeks at Gnurad have been pretty hectic; we’ve had a talent night and formal night. The talent night was great and showcased students that are very talented, through to some of the acts that were pretty funny. One of the boys just posing and another group of them doing “synchronized swimming”. Let’s just say it involved a tarp, mats and a few boys in their swimming gear. On formal night, all of us got dressed up in nice dresses and suits, and set up the dining room for a three course meal that was planned and cooked by the formal committee (which I am in). We had an awesome dinner. After that many photos were taken in our makeshift photo booth, we all migrated to the dancefloor for some dancing. The playlist we had going was one that all the students had put together, and we all really enjoyed. A few days ago we had CLP (Community Learning Project) day, and believe me it became stressful. We had to present our CLP’s to around 70 people, that wasn’t the problem though, our team had to re-write our whole presentation/script the day before we presented. Though it was tough and stressful, we got it all done. I was also one of the MC’s for the day, which was a lot of fun. We have one week left at Gnurad and we’re all pretty sad, but happy to come back home soon. -Lauren

GOOD LUCK ZAHN & PIPER

Zahn and Piper are both involved in under 14 national championships for basketball in the October school holidays. The top 4 teams from each state are invited to play off for the national title. Both students play for Eltham Wildcats and for the first time in the clubs history both the boys and girls have qualified in the same year! The championships are being held at Dandenong Basketball Stadium October 2 to 7. It's very exciting to have two representatives from Diamond Valley College and we wish them all the very best.

PLEASE SUPPORT - RIDE FOR MENS BREAST CANCER

To support Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), I am involved in a friend’s organised ride to honour his friend Andrew Lynch, who lost his battle with breast cancer in 2010. The 850km ride will commence in Melbourne on Sunday September 24 and finish in Grenfell NSW on Saturday September 30, Andrew’s home town where he is buried. The riders will engage with the communities they pass through to raise awareness of breast cancer in men.

Did you know that men get breast cancer too?

Most people aren’t aware that breast cancer can affect both women and men. This year in Australia it is estimated that 144 men will be diagnosed. For most men who are told they have breast cancer, it is unexpected, due to a lack of awareness among men and health professionals. This means that diagnosis and treatment may be delayed leading to a poor prognosis. Also, due to the stigma of being a 'man with breast cancer' they can feel isolated, ridiculed, embarrassed and hopeless while fighting the battle of their lives. But there is hope ... Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) works with men diagnosed with breast cancer to help them feel more supported, informed and included. BCNA has developed an information package tailored specially to men, which includes BCNA’s My Journey Kit, BCNA’s booklet Men get breast cancer too and a copy of Professor John Boyages’ book Male Breast Cancer: Taking Control. The riders hope that you will dig deep to support this ride and those Australian men who are facing the battle against breast cancer. All proceeds will help provide tailored resources for men affected by breast cancer. This event will also raise awareness that men get breast cancer too. To support BCNA by making a donation towards my ride target please log on to the link below. https://rideformensbreastcancer.gofundraise.com.au/page/GaryNicholls0 All donations gratefully accepted. Thanking you kindly for your support.
