FROM THE PRINCIPAL Parke Rules Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible Be A Learner Naplan Results Parke State School If you have not been lucky enough to read Monday’s Chronicle, then we have news!!! Parke State School was mentioned for their efforts across the school in nearly all areas of the NAPLAN assessment. We as a school community need to celebrate the efforts of our students and staff & of course, you the parents!! So WELL DONE everyone. Across the cohort of year three and five students, all students achieved Mean Scale Score. We had 100% of our students achieve National Minimum Standard. We are seeing some pleasing results across all year levels. Compared to the na- tion, Parke is on level, if not better in most areas of the NAPLAN testing. Our Upper 2 Band (U2B) Students have out-performed this year. As we do only have small numbers in each year level it’s hard to put individual figures to the results. So, the figure indicated are only approximates, based on the information that is provided to the school. In year 3, we had approximately 50% of students in the U2B (Upper 2 Bands) for Reading, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy. Approximately 75% of students were in the U2B for Writing. Approximately two-thirds of students in year three were in the U2B for Spelling. In year 5, we had approximately one-third of our students in U2B for Reading and Grammar and Punctuation. Two thirds in Spelling and approximately 25% in Numeracy U2B. Across the school we had 100% participation. AMAZING EFFORT BY ALL. If you would like to discuss the reports sent out last week for the individuals that completed the test, then please contact your class teacher to arrange a time. Once again, thank you everyone- staff, students, parents and extended family members. Parke is a great school and it’s fantastic to receive the recognition for the hard work we put in with our students and your children every day. Every day counts. High attendance = high student outcomes. Thank you parents for supporting us, the school, to get your child/children to school every day. 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge — two weeks to go! The reading period for the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge runs until Friday 25 August so keep reading everyone. We’d love to reach our target of 2.5 million books read during the challenge. Check out our book lists for some inspiration and don’t forget to enter the competitions offered by our program partners: http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/competitions.html Each student received a yellow recording sheet to write the titles of their reading material. Younger students need to record 20 items and the older students need to record 15. These sheets need to be returned to Mrs T by the end of next week so that she can enter the student as completing the challenge and then they will receive a certificate from the Premier. P/1/2 Class: Mrs T

The class have been busy starting their writing tasks for

this term. The Preps are going to be writing some lines

that rhyme and then presenting their lines to the rest of

the class. The Year Ones will be presenting a retell of an

Indigenous story and the Year Twos will be writing a new

page that could be included in an existing narrative. In

Maths the class have been exploring measurement of

length, area, volume and mass. This week the Year Ones

and Twos have been learning about quarter and half

turns. We will be practising this concept so that they can

distinguish between their left and right. During our Sci-

ence lessons we have been looking at different types of

forests, why we need them and how we can conserve

them.

3/4 Class: Mrs Crawford

In the 3/4 classroom we have been busy over the last fortnight. For our English, the year 3 students are study-ing narratives about overcoming a fear and getting ready to write one themselves. The year 4 students are examin-ing traditional stories that have a moral and are planning their own story that they are going to write. We have been busy in Maths, looking at Multiplication and Division, Measurement and Money. In Science the year 3 students are learning about the earth, sun and moon and how this affects daytime and night-time and also the seasons. The year 4 students are looking at soil and erosion. For Histo-ry we are looking at Continuity and Change, the year 3 students are studying a particular place and how lifestyles have changed and the year 4 students are studying the Eora people and how their life changed when the First Fleet arrived in Australia.

What’s happening in class

All Classes: Mrs Sillitoe Maybe some Oscar awards winners in the making at Parke State School. The year 5 and 6s have been very busy planning their iMovie trailers, based around them being a Vietnamese refu-gee after the Vietnamese war. Each student has had to plan a story line involving… Why they needed to leave Vietnam How they left Vietnam What events did they have to encounter on their

journey to Australia Their life in Australia. During this term we have been reading “The Happiest Refugee” by Ahn Do. This book has allowed the stu-dents to get an excellent inside view of how the Viet-namese refugees survived persecution, travel to Aus-tralia and then make wonderful contributions to our society. During this process the students are developing their skills in the following apps…. These apps are free

5/6 Class: Mrs Mac

Wednesday week 6 already!! Time sure does fly when you are having fun in the 5/6 class. The students are commencing their assessment for English this week. The grade sixes are writing a letter to a future student and year fives, a digital story adapted from the poem by AB Patterson called ‘Fur and Feathers’. Student com-plete the first of two maths assessments this week and we will start looking at our Science next week. Students are provided with a three-four week window to complete their assessment pieces so that I can pro-vide them with feedback on how to improve their work. We have also completed our Reading assessments over the last few weeks. There are some great results with some students going up multiple levels. Our number 1 focus is reading as we work towards getting every stu-dent reading at or above their reading age. If there are any parents that wish to discuss their child’s NAPLAN results, please contact the office or email me with a day/time. Thanks Mrs. Mac J
