As we reflect back on the term, it is fantastic to see all that the students have achieved and the many events that we have undertaken. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for the support you have given both to your child and to the school. FIRST EUCHARIST Over the last two weekends students from our school and parish made their First Communion in the Basilica. This was a very special occasion for them and for our school and parish community. We are very proud of each student and the mature way in which they participated in the Sacrament. Thank you to all parents for their support in preparing the students for this special day and to Sister Lynn, Miss Chen and Mrs Cooks for coordinating the programme. DEPARTURES We say goodbye to our two Notre Dame Internship students: Miss Chen in Year 4 and Miss Gillen in Year 5. We hope they have enjoyed their time at St Patrick’s and wish them well in their future teaching careers. SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND COLLECTION TIMES YEARS 1 TO 6 A reminder for Term 4, that the earliest time for children to arrive at school is 8.05am when the first duty commences and the latest time for the children to be collected is 3.20pm. Our afternoon drive through will revert back to the students waiting on the grassed area. At 3.00pm the Parry Street gates will be open for the collection of students in Years 1 to 3. Children will be lined up with their houses (flags) awaiting collection. We would like the older grades (Years 4 to 6) to be collected at 3.10pm. This staggers pick up to ensure that we do not block Parry Street for other traffic nor contravene any road rules. I’ll leave you with this thought! HOW TO TURN REQUESTS INTO PROBLEMS FOR

KIDS TO SOLVE

When parents solve all children’s problems we not only increase their dependency on adults but we teach them to be afraid of making mistakes. That’s fertile ground for anxiousness and perfectionism, which often go hand in hand. Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents to solve. Of course, if you keep solving them, they’ll keep bringing them. “Mum, my sister is annoying me?” “Dad, can you ask my teacher to pick me for the team?” “Hey, I

can’t find my socks!” It’s tempting if you are in a time-poor family to simply jump in and help kids out. Alternatively, you can take a problem-solving approach, cueing them to resolve their own problems and take responsibility for their concerns. “What can you do to make her stop annoying you?” “What’s the best

approach to take with your teacher?” “Socks, smocks! Where might they be?”

Here are 5 questions you can ask kids to encourage them to resolve their own problems: 1. “Can you solve this yourself?” Get kids thinking they can do it. 2. “What do you think needs to happen?”

Start kids thinking about solving problems. 3. “What’s the first step?” Sometimes just getting kids started is enough to get them working out issues themselves. 4. “How would you like me to help?” Get kids considering the type of assistance they need. 5. “What’s the best way to do this?” Get kids assessing and prioritising.

Problem-solving is one of the four major skills (optimism, social skills & independence being the others) that resilient kids share, yet it’s the one that many of us aren’t equipped to develop. Start by stepping back and asking good questions when kids bring you their problems to solve.

SUGAR PROJECT This term the Year 5 class has been learning about “sugar” but specifically “hidden sugar” and its effects on the body. We were given a project with activities to do involving hidden sugars. Activities ranged from writing letters to the Government to exposing falsely advertised “healthy foods”.

The unit started with the whole class watching “That Sugar Film”. From here we explored what hidden sugars are and the different ways they affect the body. We found out many interesting facts like; did you know that a Boost Juice has about 21 tsp of sugar in it, or our grocery stores contain approximately 80% of sugary foods? Mid way through the term we were given a take home assignment which was due on Wednesday, of week 9. There were 7 tasks overall including writing a recipe for a low sugar snack with a maximum of 2 teaspoons of sugar, writing a letter to the Government explaining how companies are fooling customers about sugar contents in food, reflections about hidden sugars and exposing sugar contents in “healthy” foods. On Wednesday, the assignment was due and all the students brought in their “sugar free” healthy snacks. At around 10:00am we went down to the undercroft to eat each other’s healthy snacks. We later reflected on our “sugar free” snacks. By Tatjana and Cai

It’s hard to believe we are now at the end of Term 3, where has the term gone! The read-a-thon has concluded and thank you to all the children who participated. You raised just over $1700.00 which is a fantastic amount. Mrs Higgins is very excited to be able to spend this on literacy tools for the children. There are several awards being made at assembly on Friday to the students in each year who read the most books in their class, the overall class prize and a special fundraising award. This is a thank you to the students from the P&F. Information sheet/booking form for our “Big Music Quiz Night”, which is being held on Friday 21st October, came home with the students this week. Tickets are on sale either through the P&F or through the front office. Tables are of 10 and the night is dress up as your favourite musician. Elvis will be hosting the night and there will be dancing, games and of course the Quiz. It is BYO for your table’s nibbles, and there is a licensed bar. If anyone within our school community would like to make a donation to the Quiz Night by way of goods or vouchers we would love to hear from you. Please contact Jo DaSilva by email [email protected] or Christina Gatti by email [email protected]. Tickets are on sale through either the front office or you can contact Jo DaSilva directly. It’s shaping up to being a great night and we have got some great prizes as well as some great auction items up for grabs. As a bit of a teaser here are a couple of auction items you may like to bid on; • A staff member (not naming who) is being auctioned off along with a fantastic hamper

full of cocktail ingredients. The staff member will come along to an afternoon / evening for 10 people and mix cocktails for them for 2 hours!

• The balcony space of year 5 /6 will be auctioned off for this year’s Edu Dance concert.

It will hold 15 people and you will also receive wood fire pizzas for your group to munch on. This spot is a great vantage point to see the concert.

Year 2 will be holding a second hand book stall in fourth term and they have asked if you could go through your books to donate for the stall. With the holidays upon us this is a great time to do a book clean out. Please see more information on the attached flyer. Things to note for fourth term;

Year 4 iPad raffle – tickets available for sale at the office Year 5 Essential oils raffle – tickets on sale in term 4

Year 2 second hand book stall – Week of 31st October Big Music Quiz Night – Friday 21st October - tickets on sale.

We hope you all have a safe and happy break over the holidays and look forward to seeing you all back in Term 4.
