WHAT’S HAPPENING?

PREP The children have been enjoying our current topic on ‘Dinosaurs’ and had a fantastic time digging for dinosaurs during the ‘Fossil’ incursion today. I think we may have some paleontologists in the making!

Tomorrow is a dinosaur themed Show and Tell. We ask if children can please bring ONE dinosaur themed item to share with their class, e.g. a soft toy, a book, etc.

In preparation for Grade 1, we have asked all Preps to bring in a pencil case. As you may have noticed, they are just a little bit excited! Please ensure that your child’s pencil case is named and large enough to fit pencils, crayons, textas, glue and scissors. We will provide most items unless stated on the note we sent home.

GRADE 1 We are beginning to focus on our new CAFÉ Reading Comprehension Strategy of ‘identifying important information’. Using this strategy, students will develop the ability to summarise texts, by identifying the main idea and most important pieces of information.

Students have continued to be enthralled by our inquiry unit ‘Schoolyard Safari’ and have loved observing the different mini-beasts that have been brought in for our perusal!

We have enjoyed listening to the students share their ‘backyard safari’ homework and explaining the different places they found mini-beasts hiding!

We are looking forward to our upcoming excursion to The Melbourne Museum, on the 3rd December. Please look out for our excursion notice form that will be going home this week.

GRADE 2 Home reading: Do you and your child check their CAFÉ focus card before they begin home reading? Are they reading aloud and having discussions with you about what they’ve read? Regardless of how well your child can decode (read the words), reading aloud, questioning and having discussions are vital to building important comprehension skills.

As part of our ‘Habitat’ inquiry this week, the children conducted research on oceans. They were very interested to learn about how oceans differ, the layers of the ocean, and the huge range of animals that live in this fascinating habitat.

Hopefully all children are underway with their ‘Habitat Project’. They are welcome to bring their diorama (and fact sheet) in before the due date if they finish early.

Grade 2 …. Cont’d Thursday 3rd December, Grade 2 students will head to Melbourne Zoo to further explore and consolidate their learning. Permission forms will be sent home this week. If you hold a current WWCC and would like to attend as a parent helper, please let your child’s teacher know ASAP. Thanks! GRADE 3/4 The students should all have received an outline of their creative home project due on Friday 20th November. This requires the students to create an original piece of artwork using recycled materials. They have also been asked to do some writing in relation to this project.

Our Café focus this week is figurative language. This includes the likes of similes, metaphors, personification and hyperboles. You may like to discuss some examples with your children.

In Maths we are continuing with Data, Graphs and Chance.

The Parkdale Secondary School ESP Program Year 9 students came today to run sports skills with the children.

If you have any colourful catalogues you don’t need please send them to Mrs. Boreham. Congratulations to our AR Certificate recipients: Jess C, Joel Mc, Grace R, Logan D, Sheridan S, Evan B, Flynn H. Tilly F, Tiffany B, Emilee F, Mitchell S, Imala V, Olivia H, Nathan W.S, Hugo H, Callum B, Emma L, Jayda S, Lilly S, Sheriden S, Flynn H, Grace R, Annelise W, Kate S and Jack C. GRADE 5/6 Having now approached the half-way mark for our final term, our students are continuing to impress with their initiative and maturity, both in terms of work ethic and their responsible ownership towards school life generally.

In this very busy term, there are some very important dates to put into your calendar: Friday 4th December… Memory-book Presentations Tuesday 8th December… Year 7 Transition for many students. Tuesday, 8th December… Grade 5 Leadership Speeches Thursday December 10th ... Grade 6 Graduation Tuesday 15th December… MSAC… End of Year Celebration. Please could all grade 6 students bring in payment for Graduation Night (if outstanding), in addition to their special “baby” photo for this special occasion?

Green Scene Garden Club

The school Gardening Club has had a great start to Term Four! In the last few weeks we have been planting new veggies, weeding and taking care of our Community Herb Garden. We dug up heaps of potatoes we planted last term and made potato pancakes… they were super yummy!!! This Friday, 13th November, we are whipping up some potato salad to finish off the potatoes! Stop by to taste some delicious potato salad and see what is happening this week in Gardening Club.

Remember it is EVERY Friday at lunch and you can come drop by whenever you want. Hope to see some new faces this week!

Parents: Need some last minute herbs for dinner??? Please help yourself to the Community Herb Garden… J
