As a College the main determining factor for any decision is the health and wellbeing of the girls, staff and families. We connue to monitor the situaon daily and follow advice from the Health departments and other official government sources. We are working closely with other schools to determine our response to interschool acvies. We will connue to communicate with you on a regular basis as the situaon is changing very quickly. My congratulaons to the St Rita’s College CaSSSA swimming team who were placed 2nd overall and 1st in the Percentage Cup at the CaSSSA interschool swimming carnival held last week. The girls showed great determinaon and pride represenng their school. My congratulaons also to Mr Michael Bromley, the Head swim coach for the team, and his assistant coaches. Last week we also held the Opening and Blessing of the new Trinity Centre which was undertaken by Sr Mary Franzmann, leader of the Queensland Congregaon of the Presentaon Sisters. It was a very special occasion with a Welcome to Country performed by Mr Derek Oram Sandy and a reflecon by Niketa Law and Sco Harrower on their respecve art works. We are very grateful to all those who have assisted us in achieving this iconic building for the College, including the project contractors, the College Board, the many donors to our appeal and the College staff. I have added the reflecon delivered by Sister Mary Franzmann, pbvm at the Opening which gives us great encouragement to connue to live out the message of the Gospel. God bless Mrs Dale Morrow Principal, St Rita’s College Reflecon on Ma 5:13-16 In this Gospel passage, Jesus addresses the crowd directly, and that includes us, “You are the Light of the World”. Likewise, in John’s Gospel, Jesus in speaking about himself says: I am the light of the world …. Jesus, as Light of the World, transformed the life of his followers:- set free the capve; gave sight to the blind; brought good news to the poor… So we could say that: Light evokes Life! In recent mes, we have become used to three-word slogans – especially in polical ads around elecon me. Maybe this three-word slogan – Light evokes Life - will stay with us as we reflect more deeply on this Gospel. Nano Nagle radiated the light of Christ in her living and encounters with others, especially the poor of Cork, and in doing so brought people out of the darkness of illiteracy to the light of educaon and the knowledge of God’s love for them. Light evokes Life! Thomas Berry, ecological theologian says that we carry our greatest treasure within us … a piece of light which will forever shine. There is a piece of light in all of us, easily seen in Nano Nagle who embraced the poor and carried her light to every laneway in Cork bringing hope and healing to the sick, the oppressed and ‘forgoen’ of society. Just as there was in Nano, so there is a piece of light in all of us, maybe hidden or buried or pushed into a corner. It’s true. At Bapsm we receive the light of Christ and are commissioned to keep that light burning brightly throughout our lives. We are light-filled human beings. Each one of us is meant to be the kind of radiant presence that evokes life, one that warms the hearts of others. So, what does it mean for us to be the light of the world? It is as simple, though perhaps as profound, as the small, the hidden, the unknown acts of kindness and love that will transform our world. It’s about being open to engaging in simple acts of encounter. The mystery of the Trinity is a mystery of relaonship, of membership, of parcipaon, of engagement. All light and life giving qualies. This Building too will radiate light to all who engage in the many acvies that will emanate from it. Pope Francis, in his exhortaon, ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ reminds us, and I quote: “the Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of face to face encounter with others, with their physical presence which can challenge us, with their suffering and with their joy which infects us in our close and connuous interacon. Pope Francis stresses face to face encounter. He says nothing about texng or other virtual communicaon. Our light shines in face to face encounter. I imagine that much thought and reflecon went into naming this new building the Trinity Centre. In his Leer to Arsts (1999) Pope St John Paul II wrote: “Every genuine art form in its way – from writers, painters, poets, composers, architects, musicians, – is a path to the innermost reality of humanity and of the world… Each work of art, he said, which explores the everyday … is an appeal to mystery, a genuine source of theology, a moment of grace… a kind of sacrament making present the Incarnaon in one or other of its aspects”. The giſt of the arts to us is to see God in the everyday, to see the divine in the ordinary. We are empowered to see things differently, to hear below the superficial, to wonder at the power and beauty of the Creator. Here, in this Trinity Centre, a place of learning where the community will gather for liturgies, for music and the arts, we will flesh out more clearly how we might manifest God’s presence in the one life we all share, by proclaiming jusce, courage and hope. From this creave space we will go out prepared “to give light to all in the house. We will be encouraged to let our light shine for all to see. Light evokes Life! Dear Parents/Guardians

Thank you for your continued support of the College as we manage the COVID-19 virus. As a College the main determining factor for any decision is the health and wellbeing of the girls, staff and families. We continue to monitor the situation daily and follow advice from the Health departments and other official government

My congratulations to the St Rita’s College CaSSSA swimming team who were placed 2nd overall and 1st in the Percentage Cup at the CaSSSA interschool swimming carnival held last week. The girls showed great determination and pride representing their school. My congratulations also to Mr Michael Bromley, the Head swim coach for the team, and his assistant coaches.

Reflection on Matt 5:13-16

In this Gospel passage, Jesus addresses the crowd directly, and that includes us, “You are the Light of the World”. Likewise, in John’s Gospel, Jesus in speaking about himself says: I am the light of the world …. Jesus, as Light of the World, transformed the life of his followers: - set free the captive; gave sight to the blind; brought good news to the poor… So we could say that: Light evokes Life! In recent times, we have become used to three-word slogans – especially in political ads around election time. Maybe this three-word slogan – Light evokes Life - will stay with us as we reflect more deeply on this Gospel. Nano Nagle radiated the light of Christ in her living and encounters with others, especially the poor of Cork, and in doing so brought people out of the darkness of illiteracy to the light of education and the knowledge of God’s love for them. Light evokes Life!

Thomas Berry, ecological theologian says that we carry our greatest treasure within us … a piece of light which will forever shine. There is a piece of light in all of us, easily seen in Nano Nagle who embraced the poor and carried her light to every laneway in Cork bringing hope and healing to the sick, the oppressed and ‘forgotten’ of society. Just as there was in Nano, so there is a piece of light in all of us, maybe hidden or buried or pushed into a corner. It’s true. At Baptism we receive the light of Christ and are commissioned to keep that light burning brightly throughout our lives. The mystery of the Trinity is a mystery of relationship, of membership, of participation, of engagement. All light and life giving qualities. This Building too will radiate light to all who engage in the many activities that will emanate from it. Pope Francis, in his exhortation, ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ reminds us, and I quote: “the Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of face to face encounter with others, with their physical presence which can challenge us, with their suffering and with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction. Pope Francis stresses face to face encounter. He says nothing about texting or other virtual communication. Our light shines in face to face encounter. I imagine that much thought and reflection went into naming this new building the Trinity Centre. In his Letter to Artists (1999) Pope St John Paul II wrote: “Every genuine art form in its way – from writers, painters, poets, composers, architects, musicians, – is a path to the innermost reality of humanity and of the world… Each work of art, he said, which explores the everyday … is an appeal to mystery, a genuine source of theology, a moment of grace… a kind of sacrament making present the Incarnation in one or other of its aspects”. The gift of the arts to us is to see God in the everyday, to see the divine in the ordinary. We are empowered to see things differently, to hear below the superficial, to wonder at the power and beauty of the Creator. Here, in this Trinity Centre, a place of learning where the community will gather for liturgies, for music and the arts, we will flesh out more clearly how we might manifest God’s presence in the one life we all share, by proclaiming justice, courage and hope. From this creative space we will go out prepared “to give light to all in the house. We will be encouraged to let our light shine for all to see. Light evokes Life!

May each of us take seriously this teaching of Jesus – you are the light of the world! May our light continue to shine and may we be a source of light to others as we meet each other face to face.

COVID-19St Rita’s continues to work very hard in management of the complex health and safety issues associated with COVID-19, and the impacts on our College community. We do so in accordance with the advice of state and national authorities. We will continue to act protectively based on the advice we receive.

The College remains open for classes. If students are absent due to illness or other matter, the usual absentee processes are to be adhered to.

There is a likelihood that the College will have students or staff who will be referred for COVID-19 testing as a result of Queensland Health protocols or who will need to self-isolate. We will continue to manage the risks associated with these cases and follow the strict Queensland Health protocols.

The COVID-19 page provides the College community with the latest communications from the College and links to the latest information from Health authorities. There are also useful fact sheets and hygiene infographics. Click here to access.

Please continue to practice good hygiene.Good hygiene, at all times, will count enormously in helping to prevent the spread of the virus.• Clean hands with soap and water often;• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow when coughing or

sneezing; • Avoid contact with anyone who has flu-like symptoms; and• Using non-contact greetings in lieu of close contact greetings (handshakes and

hugs etc).

College Health Assessment Centre OperationalThe College Nurse is appointed and Ballygriffin is the College’s Health Assessment Centre. The College maintains a zero tolerance policy within our Risk Management Plan and any students or staff members who present with flu-like symptoms will be sent to Ballygriffin to be assessed by the College Nurse.

College Sick Bay remains operational for all other health and injury requirements.

If a student or staff member is deemed unfit for school by the College Nurse, contact by the Nurse will be made with the parents/guardians, or other nominated emergency contacts if the parents/guardians cannot be contacted in the first instance. There are two lifts currently operating to the Ballygriffin room. In an effort to contain any potential contamination, Lift 2 is the designated Lift for Ballygriffin travel until further notice and has been signed as such. If a student is assessed by the College Nurse as unfit for school and sent home, the College Nurse will liaise with parents/guardians. A consultation with a Doctor may be recommended. Until further notice, a 72-hour exclusion from school will apply to all students sent home by the College Nurse. The student must return to school after the exclusion period via the College Nurse. A medical certificate is not required unless a consultation with a Doctor was recommended. The College COVID-19 Risk Management Plan has been updated to this effect.

Notification of non-essential activities cancelled or postponedWith the government’s request for precautionary responses to the spread of the coronavirus in Australia, the College has reassessed all non-essential on campus and off campus activity up to the end of September. This is in line with the government’s advice today that such measures should currently encompass a six-month period. Should there be some relief in the COVID-19 conditions during this period, the timeframe would be lifted. As such, many sports fixtures and training, music events and functions, debating, academic and faculty happenings and excursions, pastoral, camp and community events will be affected until the end of September. The list to the end of May is carried below. The MySRC calendar will be updated in the ensuing weeks to the end of September. A brief of these procedures is carried below. Any specific queries should be directed to your daughter’s class teacher in the first instance.

The following requirements are College policy with regard to Assessment and Assignment provisions due to absence. These measures are standard procedure, conveyed within the College Assessment Policy (pages 127-130 of the Student Planner) and are not special provisions specific to the current coronavirus environment. Below is a summary of the Policy provided in the Student Planner.

Years 10, 11 and 12 students• Students in Years 10, 11 or 12 who are absent due to illness on the day

an examination is being held or an assignment (this includes spoken presentations) is due, are required to obtain a medical certificate verifying their absence. The medical certificate must cover the due date of the assignment or examination.

• Examinations – will be taken on the first day the student returns to College.• If the assignment is completed and the student is able to, the usual rules for

submission must be followed: All written assessment tasks must be submitted electronically to Turnitin as a PDF document by 9:00am that day.

If the assignment is not submitted on the due date due to illness (including spoken presentations), upon return to the College the following procedure must be followed:• Email a copy of the medical certificate to the Class Teacher and the

corresponding Head of Faculty.• Attach a copy of the medical certificate to the printed assignment.• Submit their assignment to their teacher by 8:30am the day following they

return to school, i.e. if the student returns to school on a Wednesday, the assignment is to be submitted by 8:30am Thursday.

Years 7, 8 and 9 studentsStudents in Years 7, 8 and 9 who are absent due to illness on the day an examination is being held or an assignment (this includes spoken presentations) is due, need only to submit an email or letter from their parents, (a medical certificate can also be accepted), verifying their absence. • Examinations – will be arranged by their Class Teacher in academic catch up on

a Monday afternoon after school.• If the assignment is completed and the student is able to, they can email

the assignment to their Class teacher. All written assessment tasks must be submitted electronically to Turnitin as a PDF document by 9:00am that day.

• If they are too ill to submit their assignment, upon return to the College they should hand the assignment in to their Class Teacher the first day they return.

You are all aware of Tiktok which can, at times, be a social media app that delivers hurt and harm. Often it can also deliver fun and information. Please take the time to read the following information regarding tiktoks. They provide good overview and good advice to protect your daughters:

Loretta Ryan, alumnae 1982, was interviewed recently by Donna Lynch. It’s a lovely interview you might enjoy watching. She reflects upon her faith and her time at St Rita’s. Click here to view.

Yesterday morning, the Prime Minister announced that National Cabinet has accepted the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) that schools should remain open at this time. Specifically, Cabinet agreed that “pre-emptive closures are not proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time.”

The College has been working to implement Learning At Home processes for students in the event a closure does occur.

My letter detailing these processes, along with guidelines for Learning at Home was sent to parents and students yesterday. Parents are asked to check their emails for this communication.

I ask that you take the time to read through the material in detail. It is important that you come back to College Leadership staff with any questions or queries you have, so that if we have to enact the Learning from Home processes you are confident and comfortable in working with us to implement the processes for your daughter’s continued learning. I value the cooperative approach the College is receiving from families during these extraordinary times. Your support is very much appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Dale MorrowPrincipal

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - MISSIONMrs Erica Qureshi

Our College community is committed to bringing the messages contained in the Gospels alive for our students. Nano Nagle, founder of the Presentation Sisters, provides for us a model of one who was able to make the Gospels relevant to her community. She ministered to the poor and the dispossessed and shared everything with them until she had scarcely enough resources for herself. Working at times through illness and often through adversity, Nano gave her ‘all’ to the poor and needy of Cork. She educated children in secret schools when Penal Laws forbade the setting up of schools for Catholics. She worked with her community to reinstate to them that the Gospels contain messages of love, truth, beauty, forgiveness and hope.

In Religious Education, Religion and Ethics and Study of Religion classrooms our students are encouraged to extrapolate how the Gospels have meaning for them today. This year’s College theme, Hope, and how this can be expressed in our community, further consolidate these understandings. There are other ways we bring the Gospels alive for our students – one such way is the Pope Francis life-size cut out, holding a mobile phone containing Pope Francis’ daily tweet. Pope Francis provides us with a contemporary vision of the Gospels, using language we understand and inserting the messages and meanings of the Gospels to our modern context. He tells us that we must ‘show up’ for each other, care and love each other and include each other.

Students this week have noticed the Pope Francis image moving around the College and are reading his daily ‘tweet’. These tweets are reiterations of Jesus’ message to us and so another contemporary way of keeping the Gospels alive here in our community. Of course, these tweets will mean nothing if they’re not lived, and so I encourage the whole community to live out these tweets, and in doing so and in the words of some of our Year 7s, be Gospel people and build the Kingdom of God!

Student Absence

If students are absent from class in the coming weeks, due to self-isolation or illness, it is essential the College Assessment Policy is followed. Students must submit assignments electronically via MySRC, Turnitin and/or email. Students who are ill and cannot submit assignments on time must apply for an extension through the usual method on MySRC. If students are unable to attend an exam, a medical certificate is required for students in Years 10 - 12. If parents have a concern regarding this, please contact me.

Continuity of classes As we navigate the possible closure of the College, our staff are preparing students so they can access the curriculum via our online learning platforms MySRC and OneNote. Students will be required to be participating in their lessons, following the normal timetable. In the event a student is not able to participate, prompt communication with the teacher of that subject notifying them of this will be appreciated.

UN Youth ConferenceStudents from Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in the Queensland State UN Youth Conference. It was an opportunity for the students to engage with key issues as the youth is the future and pivotal in making the world a better place. The conference gave the students skills and ideas to make change: to understand the issues, to put forward their points of view, and to force people to listen. This year’s State Conference focused on the theme of ‘Development in the 21st Century’ and considered the idea that different countries and societies have different levels of development, and the resulting relationships between countries of different development levels. Many of today’s issues in international relations stem from the tensions between countries at different levels of development, and as we think

about driving the future of the world – which, as young people, will be our role – we need to be informed about how these interactions work, why they matter, and what we can do about them. The students thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

I loved networking with many enthusiastic and knowledgable delegates from across Queensland and developing my leadership skills. I was inspired and exposed to numerous opinions and clever points during debates and discussions. The best part was definitely the Model United Nations Conference and Interactive Problem Solving activities, where we were able to act as leaders of countries and make decisions in accordance of the countries best interests. I would highly recommend this event to anyone at St Rita’s! ~ Lana

The conference was an amazing experience! I realised that I have a passion for leadership and UN diplomacy, and have applied to attend the national conference in Sydney to further develop my knowledge and passion. ~ Jessica

Year 11 Drama Excursion Mrs Coster and Miss Purser accompanied Year 11 Drama students to La Boite Theatre Company to view a live performance of The Neighbourhood. This show provides an important and intimate experience for high school students to engage with refugee, asylum seeker and migrant stories. With a modern day Australian society which is made up of people from all different places and backgrounds, the show starts an imperative conversation with the young people of our communities. It gives space to stories which have seldom been given voice and asks an important question for our future about how we welcome people and how we form our neighbourhood.

Film Club

Film Club is the brainchild of three Year 12 students - Phoebe McLeod, Caroline Falconer and Josephine Barrett - who wanted a space where they could watch a film and then dissect and analyse it later- like a book club, but for movies! The club is aiming to watch at least two films varying in genres and styles each Term in cinemas across Brisbane. It’s not too late for more students to join the Club - all you need is money for your cinema ticket and snacks!

Email Miss Bradbury at [email protected] to have your name added to the list. Miss Bradbury and Mrs Coster will accompany students to the cinemas.

Teacher SpotlightFilm, Television and New Media teacher, Miss Bradbury and the Head of Faculty – The Arts, Mrs Coster, were privileged to attend the exclusive event Conversations with Baz Luhrmann. They gained insights into Baz Luhrmann’s life, career, tips, tricks, inspirations and how to share this with their students. What an experience and one that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Last week our workshop focused on academic writing skills, using the 6+1 Traits of Writing model. This model is not a curriculum or a program; it is a way to empower our students to think about their writing in a consistent manner. It offers them a set of overarching elements to guide their writing.

It’s important for students to understand that writing is an aspect of the learning process, not just a response to an upcoming assignment or homework task. It is also not a skill required only for English or Humanities-based subjects. ‘Writing-to-learn’ is equally effective across all curriculum areas and writing practice must be regular. If your daughter says she has no homework, she can always spend time practising her writing in order to develop clarity, fluency, critical thinking skills and confidence.

Ideas for this can be found on the Study Skills tile in MySRC.

These skills are an adjunct to our academic reading strategy – the fly/hunt strategy and Cornell note-taking. Resources for these are also available on the Study Skills tile.

Next week’s Study Skills Workshop will focus on proofreading and editing; useful not only for school but for life generally!

KILDARE NEWS Kildare Colour Day and Ovarian Cancer Teal Ribbon Day

Tuesday 25 February was both Kildare’s Colour Day and Ovarian Cancer Teal Ribbon Day. We decided to celebrate it by targeting our two House wellbeing initiatives; Ovarian Cancer and Headspace.

At the same time every year Kildare House proudly supports and helps raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer Australia. Heartbreakingly, in Australia four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer a day and three will die from the disease. To put it into perspective, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is now 91%, however, in comparison the five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is only 46% with over 70% of women diagnosed at late stages. Sadly, the statistics for survival rates have not changed in the last 30 years.

Ovarian cancer is known as the ‘silent killer’ which is linked to the lack of awareness around the symptoms leading to a late diagnosis. Unfortunately, a pap smear will not pick up this disease. The signs and symptoms of this disease include increased abdominal size or persistent bloating, feeling full after eating a small amount, abdominal or pelvic pain, an increase in feeling fatigued and needing to urinate often or urgently.

To help raise awareness - a teal ribbon was given to all staff and girls during whole school Assembly. The College community united and wore these ribbons for the day to raise awareness of such an important cause. During the Assembly an eye-opening video was presented with information on the disease and we asked all present to reach out to their mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers and all other females in their life to help raise awareness on the signs and symptoms of this disease.

During our Colour Day celebrations at lunch and afternoon tea, Kildare House also had the opportunity to display a table filled with pamphlets of information and sell both teal ribbons and pens with all donations going towards Ovarian Cancer Australia. In addition to this, a Headspace stall was also set up where resources such as brochures and pens were available for students to gain an understanding about the organisation and how important positive mental health is amongst youth.

For our Colour Day celebrations at lunchtime we hired a jumping castle and provided all Kildarians with an opportunity to have fun, mingle between Year levels and participate in physical activity. This was also aimed at improving our mental

health by reducing any worries or stresses some of us may have been experiencing instead encouraging us to socialise and spend time with friends in a positive environment. After working up a sweat on the jumping castle we all enjoyed Zooper Doopers to help cool us down.

Overall, we felt the day was a success in spreading awareness of the dangers around Ovarian cancer and in promoting the importance of positive mental health amongst students.

SPORTSport and COVID-19We will be guided by the relevant Government Health Organisations and the College Leadership team who will make decisions in the best interests of the safety of all concerned with sport – the students, coaches, parents and spectators. This relates to all trainings and intra and inter school competitions.

SwimmingCaSSSA 2020Congratulations to all the girls that competed throughout the CaSSSA Swim Season this year, the efforts of every girl at training and the lead up time trials contributed to the success of the team on the day. As a team we managed to collect 1st place by 1.5% in the Percentage Cup and 2nd overall in the point score. From a very brief review of the results we have conducted, we don’t think that we could have performed any better. Every girl swam up to and often above the potential for their events.

Well done to the 19 and Under age swimmers who managed to collect 1st place in the age group, all other age groups managed to finish in the top 3 on points, no other school was able to do this on the day.

Now that the swim season is over for another year, it is time to start planning ahead for 2021. The pool is open and we are all systems go with preparations already underway to make 2020/21 bigger and better than this year.

Acqua Rosa Swimming ClubAll meets for the remainder of the season have been cancelled, at this stage there are no plans for any competitions until at least the end of April. Training will continue as normal until we are told otherwise.
