MAY 2017 TIMBERLINE HIGH SCHOOL Things have been hopping at Timberline lately. In April our students took the STAR Math and Reading exams. These are standardized tests that we take in the fall and again in the spring. We compare scores and then share the information with teachers in these areas. The results help us see where we need to put instructional emphasis in some of our courses. We also took the SAT exam. This is another standardized test that can help students get into the college of their choice. AP testing started this past Monday. Our AP students will take an unbelievable 1,352 AP Exams this year compared to the 983 we took last year. We inducted 78 students into the National Honor Society at a nice ceremony at Timberline. We had 19 students recognized as Rotary Scholars and they were honored in an awards ceremony at the Simplot Ballroom at Boise State University. Each student was recognized as was a teacher of their choosing. It was quite the night. Our Band, Choir, and Orchestra have been competing in the spring competitions and have all scored tremendously well. Prom was held this past Saturday and was a huge success. The students looked fantastic and a good time was had by all. The Friday before Prom we had food trucks from around the valley come in and sell their goodies to the students at lunchtime. This took place in the bus lane and we had an unbelievable turnout! Finally, I just wanted to let you know that US News and World Report named Timberline as the # 1 public school in the state of Idaho for the second year in a row. We are very proud of this accomplishment but realize without strong parent involvement and support we would not of received this lofty award. Thanks for the great kids you send to Timberline! Junior Families, It has been my great pleasure and honor to serve you these past two years. I have been asked to take the helm as principal at Jefferson Elementary school for the 2017-2018 school year. Thank you for all your support, humor and caring moments. I will still be part of the Boise School District and will always be just an email away! The good news for our Junior students is that Dr. Lance, with whom the majority of our students already have a great relationship, will be taking over and will see them through to graduation. Again, thank you for all the support you have given me.

We are pleased to announce that the following students have earned Na-tional Medals in the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers: Emily Comstock-GOLD and Kyle Kerr SILVER.

Their work was selected by creative professionals as the most accomplished in the nation. This year, more than 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted. Less than 1% were recognized at the national level. Students receiving top Awards have been invited to attend a ceremony at Carnegie Hall and to participate in showcase events at Parsons

School for Design at The New School a Pratt Institute's Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City. We're proud to have these students represent Timberline in this year's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

A special recognition and congratulations to Tina Zito on her election to DECA state office as well as qualifying for Nationals.

Congratulations to Angela Ni as the Idaho State Champion in Radio Speaking. Angie beat over 40 other competitors in Radio to be the State Champ! In addition, she also finished 6th in her other event, After Dinner Speaking.

Ian Hadrick was a semifinalist in the Panel Discussion in the State Debate Tournament.

Kassidi Petersen just wrapped up her year serving as the Idaho FCCLA State President. She was a exemplary representation of the best of Timberline's student body. We were so proud of her. She served with diligence, perseverance, enthusiasm, and integrity. She also received Top Gold (highest score in category) in her STAR Event Teach and Train. Talk about going

Congratulations to the Timberline Jazz Band for being selected as the winning ensemble at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival last Friday. The band was chosen as the 5A winner and was selected to perform as the opening band for the Gordon Goodwin headliner concert. Colton Shaner was also selected as Outstanding trumpet soloist.

Congratulations to the Timberline Jazz Ensemble! The jazz band traveled to Pasco, Washington this past weekend and won 1st Place in their class of 12 bands as well as Outstanding Musicianship awards for Colton Shaner on trum-pet, Sebastian houk on trumpet and the Overall Outstanding Section award for the trumpets!
