FROM THE PRINCIPAL Anzac Day
We were really pleased with the numbers who attended our Anzac Day service last week. Having the ceremony run by the children is always very satisfying. Thank you for providing the flowers. As u sual these were magnificent. Thanks also to Miss Capps and Mr Baugh who were responsible for organising the day.
Fundraiser
The IGA docket collection was a great success. With tremendous sup-port from Kathy Ellis we were successful in adding $1000 to our coffers. This money will come in really handy and most likely will be spent on curriculum resources.
Public Acknowledgment
Occasionally I receive an email or phone call from a member of the public congratulating the behaviour of our children. Recently I had an email from one of the coaches of a netball team which has played against our Rostrata girls in the Saturday competition. What was so great to hear was how well behaved the girls are on court but especially that they were great sports and showed appreciation for other teams, whether or not they won. Great effort girls, thank you for continuing to uphold the good name we have at Rostrata.
Mobile Phones
In one of their fundraising efforts the School Captains are currently col-lecting old mobile phones. The money received for them is donated to Princess Margaret Hospital. If you have any old mobiles at home please send them along to C cluster.
Early Arrivals
We are stil l getting quite a number of children who are arriving at school before the 8:30 start time. Because teachers are unable to provide the necessary duty of care at these times we urge parents and carers to consider other arrangements. If someone is at home please keep them with you. Some children are keen to get to school early but they really can’t be catered for at this time. It is acknowledged that parents work but you would be aware that we have Out of School Care provided by Camp Australia. Those children attending are given a breakfast and thoroughly engaging activities before school begins. The rebate (50% and above for low income families) on the cost for attendance makes this option worth considering. For more information refer to OSHC News on the last paged of this newsletter.
Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge
We had 29 students take part in the challenge over the holidays. Well done to these children!

...is now accepting 2013 Expression of Interest for both our Education Support and Autism Extension Programs.
Our successful Education Support program was developed to promote learning pathways in an inclusive setting for students with special educa-tion needs and disabil ity. Our programs reflect a ‘skills for life’ focus where students develop functional l iteracy, numeracy, health, social and employ-ability skills required to participate actively and safely at school, home and within the community.
CVC is also one of only four selected Secondary Schools to provide the specialised Autism Extension Program to support high functioning stu-dents with Autistic Spectrum Disorder / Asperger’s syndrome in years 8, 9 and 10 in achieving their academic goals. The Program focuses on the achievement of positive academic, behavioural, social and emotional out-comes for each student to maximise independence and access to further education and successful employment. Students may apply beyond the school intake boundary for these programs and Expressions of interest are closing soon.
Please visit www.cvc.wa.edu.au to download an EOI form or contact Mer-ri lee Wright (Associate Principal – Teaching and Learning Support) 9334 9000 or [email protected] to arrange an application pack and interview.
I wish to raise the awareness of the school community that Rostrata Primary School is a nut friendly (free) school. There are a few students who have high allergic reac-tions—life threatening—to nuts and nut products. To minimize the effects of these foods we would appreciate if parents could be aware of foods or packaging coming into the school that may cause an anaphylactic reaction . Thank you very much for your support. It is greatly appreciated. Together we can provide a safe environment for all students. Annabella Clarke (SAER Deputy)

Welcome back everyone, what a great
start to term! We have learnt a new
cake making method called ‘ rubbing in’
method. It is the main component of
scone making and our Zucchini Cheese
and herb scones were delicious.
Our other fantastic dish made in the
kitchen was the eggplant dip. All stu-
dents loved it, even though they were
apprehensive to try it. Volunteers are
greatly needed in all classes, especially
6/7. Please put your name down .
Any surplus produce from your garden
that you wish to donate
would be greatly appreci-
ated, even if i t is only 3
lemons!. We would love to
have them!
I am also calling on do-
nations of serving
crockery eg salad
bowls, platters, dip
containers etc. In
good condition, no cracks but of all
different colours and shapes would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The garden is looking fabulous especially with the recent rain. 35mm in our rain gauge. We are planting onions, leeks, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, lettuce, silverbeet, seed potatoes ( recently donated by Western Potato), coriander ,etc. The pawpaw are flowering and the cape gooseberries are flourishing. The year 4s are learning how to germinate seed, the year 5s are consolidating their knowledge of all the basic garden jobs, while the 6/7s are working hard to get the bulk of the work done in the garden as they are now very experi-enced gardeners. The chickens are laying well with a 105g whop-per collected by Noah Backhouse and his family last weekend while on chicken care roster. Thank you to the Blond, Howard, Marks and Stanton families for help with the chickens over the holidays.
May 16th Volunteer afternoon tea. Find out more about volunteering in the kitchen, garden and can-teen by coming along to the kitchen (next to C block) at 2pm and ask questions of the co-ordinators to see where you might like to help out. Enjoy some treats cooked by our students with ingredients from the vegetable garden.
Down at Garden with B6 Down at Garden with B6 Down at Garden with B6 Down at Garden with B6 Today the Garden Chefs were working with the chickens. They were cleaning the run and getting confused about the job card. It was ok, they still did well! While that was happening the Crazy Gardeners were busy composting and collecting food scraps for the planting bays.
While they were composting, the Golden Tools were soaking beet-root seedlings in a tray and watering Bay 13. Meanwhile the Silver Roses were collecting big spring onions, egg plants and parsley for the kitchen. We had a great time at gardening!

Dear Parent, Our school is pleased to inform you that the RAINBOWS program w ill continue to run at Rostrata this year. It is designed especially for children w ho are living in single parent families, step-families or families that are going through painful transitions. When something signif icant happens in a family, the w hole family is affected. Even though death or divorce appears to be a problem mainly associated w ith adults, it also has a profound effect on the children it touches. If a parent dies, or separation/divorce occurs, not only do adults grieve, but the children gr ieve also. Because of their age, and short life experiences, children f ind it extremely diff icult to verbalise their feelings. The RA INBOWS program provides an opportunity for children to be heard, understood and sup-ported, in a safe, confidential and caring environment. In Term 2 w e will be re-commencing the program at Rostrata. It w ill be conducted in small groups of ap-proximately 3-5 children w ith a trained adult facilitator. Groups w ill meet w eekly, for around 12 w eeks, for betw een 40-60 minutes during school time. If you w ould like to discuss RAINBOWS further, please contact the school on 9457 9455. If you feel your child w ould benefit from being a part of this program, please complete the form below and return it to the school, in an envelope marked Confidential – Mrs Pattullo (Front Office) before Friday, 11 May 2012. OSHC NEWS
Hi and welcome back to another fun filled term at Camp Australia. We had so much fun in our holiday club the children enjoyed every day - from going to the movies, cook-ing or doing arts and crafts to meeting reptiles and amphibians or visiting the maritime museum where we felt sea sick!
We also had lots of fun in our incursions where we loved having birds of prey visit us as well as a clown adventure and a wonder-ful Dr Seuss experience. And to top it all off we had lots of outdoor fun with our giant bubbles and lots of team games.
May I say a big thank you to the parents who sup-ported us in our first holi-day club at Rostrata and would advise anyone who is interested in future holi-day clubs to book early as we were at full capac-ity on several days. We are now back into to full swing with our before and after school care. This week we are discovering all about space and planets. Please do not hesitate to come in to see us in action in the drama room ( A 11 ) we would love to welcome new friends to our service.
