FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This is our final Newsletter for the year.

The achievement and progress at Fiordland College in 2018 has been

noteworthy. We are a small College but we have a big vision. We find ways to

overcome the difficulties of geographical

isolation. We pull together as a community in a way I have seldom seen in other schools. The 2018

achievements have not come easily. Most are the result of several years’ work. Thank you to the Senior

Leadership Team, the teaching and support staff, the Board of Trustees, the PTA, the student leadership team

and to members of the community who have supported

us in any way in 2018. We have much to feel proud of.

On Tuesday we held our New Entrant Open Day. It was great to have some time to give our potential new

students a feel for what life at the College is all about.

They have so much promise and we are excited at what they will go on to achieve in their time here.

Our Get2Go team leaves for Great Barrier on Saturday.

We wish them a great competition and look forward to

hearing how they fare.

We are on the final count-down now. I wish you all a

safe and prosperous holiday break and look forward to

ensuring that, as a school, we continue to learn and to

make the most of the opportunities available to us in

2019. Until then, I look forward to seeing you all at

Prizegiving next Tuesday evening.

DR IHIRANGI HEKE VISIT

Last Wednesday, Year 10 students were given

the opportunity to visit the Kepler area with educator Dr Ihirangi Heke. This is part of his countrywide project

combining Environmental, Health, Outdoor and Digital Technology Education with a Māori perspective.

The students were introduced to the traditional use of plants, reading signs in the weather and seasonal change

effects on food gathering and athletic performance. Four students were then selected to head out on Thursday

and showcase five local areas that were special to them.

Connor Moffat, Fergus Torr, Taisei Shimizu

and Jayden Hishon spent the day filming with a GoPro and 360 cameras at the Bird

Sanctuary, The Waiau River, Kepler Track and Outflow (Control Gates) and MTB

tracks as well as interviewing a Kepler

Challenge competitor.

This footage will be edited and presented as a Google Tour then

integrated into Google Earth to highlight how the Fiordland area

is ideal for maintaining health

and wellbeing in young people.

FROM THE HoD MATHS

Graphing Calculators

Students study ing

Mathematics NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 are required to

have their own graphing calculator.

We would prefer students to all be using the same model so the CASIO

FX-9750GII is on the stationery list. The recommended retail for these is

$132.95, although there are often sales. I have access to a special, for

this term only, where I can buy

these calculators for $95. If you would like to buy one of these, please contact the

school office by 8 February 2019. Payment is expected before the student receives the calculator. I realise this

is a fairly big expense for some families but we make

good use of the calculators and, if they are looked after, they will last a long time. Students are

encouraged to buy second hand if possible and there are students leaving at the end of this year who may

be happy to sell theirs. Please contact me at school on 249-7819 if you have any questions.

CAN OR COIN

More Fm travelled around Southland this

week promoting a “Can or Coin” to be

donated to the Southland Food Bank. Our

students (and families) got right in behind this cause

and contributed dozens of food items and a nice

amount of cash, needed to assist Southland families

over the Christmas period.

NEW ENTRANT OPEN DAY

SOCIAL STUDIES

The Year 6s and a few Year 8s came to visit

us on Tuesday for a familiarisation day. They experienced a day in the life of a

College student, and look like they all had a great time.

Some of the days highlights were: Science experiments,

Technology making key rings,

PE games in the pool.

Could this be the new gender neutral

uniform? Cole

Hegan and Tallulah

Cockburn came

from their Social Studies class to

check with Ms

Smith!

NEW UNIFORM OPTIONS

It has been a long process but the new uniform options

are now available. Adventure Outfitters in Dunedin have taken over nearly all the College uniform requirements.

H&J Smith in Te Anau will continue to provide socks,

tights and boys’ shorts until all stock is sold.

As well as our current uniform Adventure Outfitters will

be providing formal trousers, in four different cuts for a great fit, formal shorts, girls’ blouses, sports shorts and

the green tartan A-line skirt.

The school office has samples of all styles and sizes for

you to come and try on, then order/pay directly with Adventure Outfitters.

At this stage (again until stock is sold) the kilt and

the Kukri jacket are available to purchase at the

office.

THANK YOU

As part of our last newsletter for the year we

wanted to recognise our staff who cover so many extra activities for your children. All of the

“extras” that staff voluntarily give their time for are over and above what they are employed to do,

either through school or in the community.

THANK YOU — These extras are what helps

make our school and community so special

Special thanks must also go out to the parents,

caregivers and members of the community who have given their time, knowledge or expertise in any way to

help our students.

We really appreciate

everything you do

Good luck to our two Get-2-Go teams that are competing

in the National Finals on Great Barrier Island next week. They have been training hard

under the guidance of Mr Bob Perry and Mr Shaun Cantwell.

Have a great time, give it your all and make us proud! We

look forward to hearing how you are doing.

GET-2-GO

And last but not least,

thanks to all our amazing students! You are the best

and we love being able to help you navigate your way

through your school years.
